I don't have the issue on my main system, but my second system has the problem as described. My buddy plays on that system and I had to set the gamma up or it was so dark, at the same time I looked at my toon standing next to his and my screen was fine, you could tell it was night but there was no loss in vision. I think its a difference in the in game settings and hardware. My main is a stronger system far and away so the settings are turned up and I can see the light given off by the moon.
The more of this forum I read the more I laugh at SOE and Vanguard. Funny thing is my friend was telling me to get Vanguard, glad I was like "ha, its SOE... NO..."
if it wasn't for SOE, this game would have been released July of 2007. That is official word. Do you really think they should have stayed with Microsoft to let them publish the game at that date?
ok they make it night like that to make it more realistic cause you dont walk out side in real life and say god why did god make it so dark outside i mean couldnt he make it where i can see no thats stupid and quit complaining
I have already posted about this earlier. I hate the night in the game. Everything is black and it seems to last forever. Days need to be longer and nights shorter. I also agree that lighting up the darkness a little would be nice (maybe moonlite?).

when was the last time it was so dark outside when you went out that you were like "wow, I wonder why its so dark outside" have you ever been outside when its a full moon? or heck just on a clear night, you can see, Vanguard you can't....
And just because it turned night means you shouldn't have to go adjust all your game settings because its night time, god doesn't make humans put on special goggles (Night vision) to go outside during the night to see. I mean technically our eyes do it automatically, so shouldn't the game?
I see fine at night. Get a better monitor or adjust your gamma.
And for the love of christ will you damn whiners stop turning every minor pet peeve with the game into some epicly horrible game breaking issue that must be addressed RIGHT NOW, EMPHASIS IN CAPS, BECAUSE I WANT THE DEVELOPERS TO DROP EVERYTHING AND FIX THIS RIGHT NOW FOR ME.

Hey ole buddy, you must only look at DDO to see this games future; over hyped under developed, you and the rest "O" the fan boys will be the only ones left in a few months unless they make some major changes.
Hello Vanguard programmers. Sorry, but this is something that can REALLY annoy me about a game. If you're going to insist on having a day/night cycle in Vanguard, there are ways to do it OTHER than turning the landscape into near total darkness every hour. Do what WoW does...use an elegant day-for-night lighting filter. Let your players SEE what the heck they're doing for 1/4 of the game time. Or do what WoW does...and give the game a 24-hour day/night cycle. Then at least I'd know what hours to play during, rather than logging on to find myself looking at a black screen. I know what the fanboys' answer is: Turn up the gamma settings. Well, if the game designers INTENDED for players to have to ratchet up their gamma every hour, and play on a pasty gray-on-gray looking screen with virtually no contrast at all, then they are as moronic as the players who consider that a reasonable answer. And don't try to excuse it with claims of "realism". "Realism" doesn't mean days an hour long. "Realism" doesn't mean navigating through pitch blackness by watching for the neon-lit signs of creatures' names over their heads, and poking at the tab key to see where the targeting circle jumps around to. Remember if you can, when you were playing those night-long sessions of D&D during your formative years, you didn't turn off the lights every time you went down into a dungeon, and read your die rolls by touch. It's a GAME...make it playable, Kthxbye.
The game has a gamma setting just turn it up a bit you can make it as light as you want at night lol . Just play with gamma , brightness and contrast and you can make it look unreal i love the nights in vanguard but i play at 1920x1200 all settings maxed looks so cool at night
Gamma, Contrast, and Brightness is there for a reason, and nighttime has a purpose in game as certian things will happen only when the sun goes down.
If your having to up your brightness or gamma to see at night.... its functionally too dark.
I mean there are plenty of games where you read at the start "dont adjust your gamma because our nightime effects are designed to add atmosphere" or something to that effect.
VSoH isnt exactly a creepy adventure game. Making the nights so dark that they interfere with people's ability to play the game enjoyably isnt a feature, its a mistake.

I wouldnt mind if the light lasted longer, even if that took away from the realism a little. I always feel like night time lasts so long in Vanguard! I am constantly thinking 'gr I wish it would be light out again!'
I dont think making it brighter at night is really the answer though. Even in WoW the world just isnt a beautiful at night, which is terrible because WoW has that stupid 24 hour system... Seriously, I played WoW for 6 months and I dont think I ever got to play it while it was bright outside... TERRIBLE. After WoW I have pretty much decided not to bother with games with 24 hour daylight cycles. I used to look at screenshots of WoW during daylight and think 'why doesnt WoW ever look like that for me?? oh... right...'
So really I would just make daylight start sooner and end later in the day for Vanguard.
The first day I played I thought it was too dark. But I made a stupid mistake of forgetting I have a LCD screen, so I can't lean back in my chair or it gets real dark, if I sit up it is no problem. I will agree they need to tweek it a bit more because it is still a tad too dark sometimes.
Edit: It seems like every time we try to make a constructive thread we get a whole bunch of "OmGZZZ Tooo Dakr Glaad I didnnt buy this game I was riht al along" and "WAR will be better". You can't say WAR or AoC will be better because right now all we know is what the devs tell us. WAR and AoC could totally bomb. You can't judge them till they are here.
I've gotta say I've never had a problem with night time, mess with your settings or something, this shouldn't be happening. I never had a problem with night in beta either. Wish I knew how to help you enjoy a game that I'm enjoying. Take care.
I've never really had a problem with night either, though I run at max settings so maybe it's different for me.
I would actually be on board if they decided to make night more "visible", but I do kinda like having the whole unknowing darkness thing. Perhaps if they could find some happy middle ground.
Another thing I think I'd like is perhaps if they made the night time shorter. Perhaps set it to about 75% of the length it is now, and make the days longer. The game's so beautiful, i want more time with the lights on to see all the neat stuff.

My basic strategy to stop from getting to pi$$ed about it is that I generally just craft after dark then go adventure at sunup. Breaks up the gameplay too. Its working for me.

Nothing wrong with tweaking your settings thats what they are there for,so you have a choice. Wish i know how to post screenshots i have some totally awesomes shots of the mountains and the moon looks unreal
I am so glad that there are no forums on sigils website. So they dont have to read it and never will be influenced by people who dont have a clue what Sigil trys to publish.
How about switching names off completely and try to survive in the dark ? Thats game, the rest is mindless grind.

Seriously though, folks the problem I have with the dark cycle is that it should not last so friggin long. This is a game, played for fun and enjoyment. There are no scientific axioms that say the planetary revolution cannot make for an extended day cycle, and a shorter nite cycle. Players can still feel immersion in the world by experiencing a shorter nite time cycle, and get more enjoyment playing in an extended daytime cycle. It's fantasy, make it playable. Bad graphics for half the game should not be considered a difficulty level.

So you are saying if they stayed with MS they would have got another 6 months before having to release it?
Methinks you got the year wrong.
If it was released July 2006 it would have crashed and burned.
Microsoft had wanted to launch this thing in July of 2006, Mr. Smedley said

I agree, night time should not look like night time..
