Originally posted by VGJustice I'm also calling BS. That article states that Ch.4 would be a true expansion, requiring the player to already own one of the other games. It also says that it'll be released in 3rd quarter this year. Both of these points are directly counter to A.Net's business plan.
Actually, NC already officially announced that the next GW installment wouldn't come out in April, but in the latter half of 2007.
Originally posted by VGJustice (...) Your first link has no source info, and the only mention I could find that *did* have a source was from before the release of Nightfall.
The source is "GDC 2007" = Game Developers Conference 2007, although the reporter could have been confused with the details for future game (GW2) & expansions.
This whol GW 2 thing is absolutely ridiculous. There's basically Months left for the 4th installment and years for GW2, I'm not thinking that far into the future, some people must really be that sad to be thinking cant wait for 2010! GW 2 is coming out!
We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.
The company also aims to provide a multi-faceted game portfolio to overseas users. Exteel and Dungeon Runners will be launched in the first half of the year, while the company anticipates the launching of Tabula Rasa and a new major update to the Guild Wars franchise in the latter half of 2007.
What if *they* don't want Guild Wars 2 to have a monthly fee or a pay as you go system? NCSoft is more of a distributor while A.Net are the guys that actually made the game. In my mind, NCSoft can't really do anything GW without A.Net.
There has been an Anet response to this article. The article is false.
Anet says that "I can tell you that some of what you've read is right, some of it is wrong, and quite a bit of it is misleading." Which I would speculate means that the information about Guild Wars 2 is completely made up, the information that campaigns for Guild Wars wont be released anymore is made up, and/or the details about Guild Wars 2 are made up (but the fact they are making it isnt).
If they do make a Guild Wars 2 I hope it is significantlly different from Guild Wars 1 in game mechanics and they continue releasing expansions for GW1 even after Guild Wars 2 comes out, much like SoE releases EQ1 expansions still. On the other hand, I think GW is already so amazing I just dont see how they could make it better. For me, its on one side of the mmo spectrum. Something like this:
(Guild Wars) - Linear (WoW, LOTRo) - Traditional (EQ, AC) - Sandbox (SWG, Ryzom)
I love sandbox mmorpgs and I love Guild Wars. I havent ever really enjoyed traditional MMORPGs (especially linear ones). Theres just zero chance of Guild Wars leaping into sandbox, but there is a good chance it will become a traditional MMORPG, probably going head to head with linear games like WoW, CoH, and LOTRo. I just dont see how I could enjoy it if it does that. Yet I couldnt see them making Guild Wars 2 the same sort of game as GW. GW is already so amazing, what could GW2 possibly do to make it better? The fake articles ideas of 'big battlefields' or whatever sounds absolutely terrible to me. If GW2 presents us with WoW-like raids and crappy PvP then I wont even consider buying it and I reckon theres a lot of other GW1 fans who wouldnt either.
The only part I believe in in that text is that the next chapter will be about an icy/snowy continent, since Gaile Gray mentioned that some time ago.
The rest... I'm really tempted to call BS on most of it.
Think about it a second:
3 stand-alone campaigns and all of a sudden lvl20-only content? Weird move (then again a lot goes by the "trilogy" logic) DAoC-like PvP? I can't see that happening with the current "8 skills" system, planning any template would be mind-numbling if possible at all. Again that's a major turn-around from what GW is. 2 years w/o anything? Since the sales of keys/boxes is Anet's main source of revenue, hard to believe they could survive that long
Well I could be totally wrong, NCSoft might have said "Here, take those $100 million. Now get us some generic MMO and stop being smart offering something different".
I do hope though that a lot find those presumed changes a bit "off"...
I agree except I don't believe any of it including what Gaile hinted at. I can't take this writer seriously when it looks like it was typed half with his face.
That and this sounds about as un-ANet as you could possibly get. Sure they could take a final, weird spin on the last expansion....but there is nothing about this article that says "valid" to me.
Originally posted by VGJustice I have doubts for exactly one reason: Arena.Net.

Err, man, I don't think you have a clear picture. NCSoft is ANet's client, i.e. the one that pays for the game to be developed. If NC wants the game to come out in late 2007, it will. I work for a developing company, our customers pay us to develop programs how they want them to be, not the way we like. That's how it works.
I looked it up, and you're correct. Arena Net is a subsidary of NSSoft based in the United States. I've worked for a company under similar standing, so I can appreciate that relationship.
But, there is still one small problem with introducing Guild Wars 2 with a monthly fee and that's the existing fan base. I'm sure you've seen the impromptu polls here about "Would you pay 2 play GW?" and how they come up quite negative. Many players would dump Guild Wars in a heartbeat if a monthly fee was introduced.
Regardless of what a company wants, the LAST thing they want is to alienate their customers. NO company in their right mind wants that. So, if NCSoft and Arena.net decide to make a Guild Wars 2, they will have to consider that very carefully.
Add on top of that the fact that GW2 is too far off on the horizon to even really be considering even something as simple as a payment plan. Let me put this into context: My niece is just starting to walk. She can't talk yet, and she still needs a great deal of help with everything. By the time GW2 comes out *IF* it comes out, she will be able to run, she'll be able to talk, she might even be starting to read, and she will start becoming more self sufficient.
All I'm asking at this point is to stick to the official press releases. It's really pointless speculation at this point on GW2.
All of this is made of rumors. The only thing we KNOW, is that Gaile said some was true, some was false, and most was very misleading.
It could still turn out that new chapters will continue as they have, and not much will change. Perhaps another GW (2) would happen in the future with many different qualities. For now, I say we just wait for the CONFIRMED information in the new magazines coming ou this next month.
If these Asura become a playable race, they aim probably for a more asian market. Sounds a bit like Rappelz.
Now I am waiting for the promised 15 page (hu ???) GW feature in PC gamer. I hope for some serious information. I also wonder what will happen to GW in the time of GW2 development, which seems to be 2-3 years according to this article.

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.
I didn't read it specifically spelled out in the article - but does anyone doubt GW 2 will either:
A. Have a $20/month+ subscription fee (by 2009 this will be normal cost of MMOS I'm sure)
B. Pay as you go system where you gotta drop hundreds of dollars for the best gear/experiences
NCSoft sees a money train in GW and wants to cash in - but has to create "GW 2" so as to mitigate the fallout of going to pay-to-play.
