The devs at CoH have said for a long time that they were balancing the game with an eventual PvP system in mind. So it didn't really surprise me when they announced the PvP expansion before release. It seems to be a pretty decent priority to them so hopefully they will get it done right, the same way they got alot of other things right for release. And PvP could also be the answer to end game content, since it is something thats is constantly changing.
Originally posted by imasig I have a problem with there being no PVP. I'm still playing the game and having fun but I fear I'm going to get bored with it in about a month. Why have an mmo if you don't compete against the other players? One of the coolest things about superhero comics was when they fought each other. They need a player villian system but I hear that's coming in an expansion. Hope it is sooner than later.
The City of Villians expansion will add PvP:
PvP will be limited to specific zones on EXISTING servers so that players who do not like PvP are not forced to participate.
PvP will be allowed in ANY zone on NEW PvP server(s).
PvP will be limited to heroes vs. villians. In other words, heroes cannot harm other heroes, no word on whether villians can harm other villians, would seem mostly likely not given the importance of AoE powers in the game.
CoH is not made for pvp. Half the powers would have to be nerfed. Everyone will complain loudly about both the nerfing and the uber templates.
Wrong. Plain and simple, wrong.
Developers already know how to handle this and it's been done in other games. You leave powers exactly as is for PvE, and you have the same powers behave differently during PvP. These means PvE-only folks are completely 100% not effected. Only when a power is used on a player character does the new code kick in.
This is not a problem, if you want to keep imagining it is, if you need something to whine about it, go for it. But it's not a problem. The Cryptic devs are smart folks.

Ok, if you say so. If Cryptic manages to do this miracle, they will be the first. No other game has done it yet. First, any game that allows other players to control another is going to get a lot of whining, which will lead to an eventual nerf. UO had paralyse. EQ had mezzes. DAOC had mezzes. SWG has knockdowns and dizzies. You don't think the ability to lock a player down and blast him to bits will be a problem? I'd like to see a scrapper survive in this world.
Mobs have hold powers, in fact alot of them do. There are already counters to hold powers, and the scrapper has his own in the regeneration and invulnerability that I can remember. I don't think super reflexes has specific resistances to holds like regen and invuln do, but reflexes has resistances against all ranged attacks, which includes holds.
So yea, hold and hold counters have already been thought of and are already being used.

Here's my opinion: 1. There is money its called influence....I dont know how I can go into more detail than that 2. There's no player economy and to me thats a great thing. I was tired of running arounf L2 to see scammers. I was tired seeing chinese bots run everywhere to make real money on ebay with their "gold". I was tired in SWG where I went to look at some FWG5 (or whatever they were called lol I stopped playing it back in Jan.) and seeing the gun sell for 450,000 because the merchants were catering to dupers. 3. When was the last time you saw Spider-Man or Wolverine or Captain America sporting a new lvl 32 Magical Helm of Transcendmeditation?

The first two days of play i thought it was a cool game. On my second attempt of creating a scrapper i took dark armour as a second power. I either leave it off all together now due to the fact i have no endurance to use it and like you have said, time i should be spending chatting and having fun is spent waiting for my little circle on my power bar to grow. It also annoyed me i had to be stationary and for the mob to be stationary too for me to be able to hit it....It was almost like playing double dragon on a console....no lightning fast saves of a healer in this game.
You could say that i picked a wrong class for my playstyle, but at level 9 i think i have seen all the game can offer me.

CoH, While a very fun game, is a great Arcade game and not a MMoRPG. It shouldn't be costing me 50 bucks plus 15 bucks a month just to play a arcade game with friends.
This game would be better suited like Guild Wars. No monthly fee but pay for expansions.

No, i'm 30 and haven't been to an arcade in over 12 Years. Add that to the fact I grew up in a small town (Pop 1500) so I never did see many arcades growing up.
What I meant and didn't clearly define is I paid to play a MMoRPG and not a Arcade Game. There is nothing wrong with CoH it's just not a MMoRPG is all. It's a great Aracde Game that should of followed the lines of Blizzard's Battlenet. Or at least call itself a Massivly Multiplayer Online Action Adventure Game
i have read with interest all the posts in this thread and sadly i must conclude tat those who think city of heroes is not good is missing out on some things. lemme clarify some points:
1) as some of you have pointed out. it isn't really a mmorpg. i've not really played many other mmorpgs myself but judging from the points stated by some of the critics here, i have to agree. YES. it is like an arcade game. but NO, its still worth the 15 bucks a month playing. WHY? simple, the key word is WORTH. seriously. 15 bucks a month, the time spend trying to make your money's WORTH means that you have LESS time to go out and spend (probably) more money than you plan to. Lets say: one weekend movie + popcorn +drinks + transport costs. You do the math, its easy to calculate. for those who savour certain elements of mmorpgs not in this game. well, one man's meat is another's poison. there really shouldn't b an argument about this.
2) in relation to the point above, some people will then point out: ok so i'm now spending time trying to get my money's worth. is it time well spent? i find anyone who asks this questions extremely retarded. bcos we all know the best way to spend time is NOT playing games of any sort. rather, as a just-started-working-life adult myself, a better way to spend time is to work and earn cash, and go on dates with girls and outings with friends. mmorpgs require huge amounts of time to gain some form of high satisfaction. if you do not agree. stick to offline pc or console games to play at your own time n leisure (which i must point out CAN take up huge amounts of time as well).
3) too much grinding? not enuff content? how long have you played? 5 days? 10 days? i've played almost 3 weeks now. and i AGREE. at the lower levels it can get boring. in fact, i stopped playing for around 3 days in between bcos i tot the grinding was boring and excessively repetitive. THEN when i came back, i met this bunch of people who showed me why i wasn't enjoying. exactly bcos i was too caught up with levelling up myself. Do it the right way guys. COH KNOWS at lower levels it can get boring. THAT'S WHAT THE SUPERGROUPING AND SIDEKICKING IS FOR. with sidekicking, you can group with higher level heroes and fight higher level mobs that let you level faster. playing with your supergroup means you can chat while you play. with a usual bunch of friends. from all over the world. and you can do this even WHILE fighting. YES. there is a thing called auto-attack. explore and learn please. i wouldn't recommend using the auto-attack tho'. you'll find your hero attacking mobs who give no xp once too often. if you're gonna play a game with auto-attack all the time, you might as well name your heroes 'Hero Bot 1', 'Hero Bot 2', etc... the higher level missions are also more fun, i assure you. I just played a TIMED mission where there was AT LEAST 50 nazis waiting in the main hall for us, you should see the action when they swarmed over to us. My friend used a fraps program to capture all tat action as proof, its real.
4) some of my friends say that CoH is heading towards a DAoC situation, where it just gets too diificult to lvl. i'm afraid i have to agree. it isn't easy. primarily bcos CoH wasn't meant for hard core gamers in the first place i feel. the developers probably didn't think it'd attract so much attention leading to hard core gamers jumping over. as a result, they did somethng i feel is logical. they didn't want those power gamers hitting lvl 30 within 1 week. it'd b pretty unfair to the casual gamers the game is meant for (i feel). so they made the xp gap bigger and harder to lvl. it sucks. but it happens everywhere.
5)gameplay gets boring after awhile? you can refer to point 3. additionally, CoH has promised updates every 2 to 3 months. the first one already coming out. go read about it. missions will be ALOT more exciting from now. WOOT! i can't wait for it.
6)can't customise character after creation? hello!??!?!? have u played L2? I have, and i got bored. why? alot of reasons but mainly bcos there were at least a thousand more Muradin Bronzebeard The Dwarf clones running around with me. L2 sucked in alot of other areas but i won't comment since i barely played it to mid level (hint: big lagging, bots, grinding is even more mind-numbing, players there are NOT friendly at all, awkward movement control system, player economy hugely inflated bcos of the damn bots, and worse of all, i got killed by a lvl 25 bot 5 minutes after i exit a village. who did i know? easy. his name was TWBot13955)
7)PvP? i'm not a big supporter of this but i do agree there should at least be some form of this. makes it more interesting. City of villains will solve this. we'll have to wait patiently meanwhile then. so don't complain tat CoH admin haven't heard your despairing cries. and you can port your good guy over and make him evil. Ja.
8)No money? its called influence here. 'nuff said. You can buy stuff with it. So if itsn't a parallel of money i don't know what is.
Other than all this. the first major update will fix lots of things already, including:
-more interesting gameplay
-more villain types
-more areas to explore
-you can now tweak your costume. so stop complaining about can't change how you look
they even have minor updates to fix lag issues and power balances. so you shouldn't grouch about them not listening to players too.
this is my first post. i actually signed up for this forum bcos i really felt compelled to clarify all this stuff. there's so many other things i can point out. feel free to criticise fairly.

After my initial thought of this is a great game, after 3 days i had seen enough.
I don't think it is a bad game, it's a case of you either like it or not....nuff said
Mmorpg's take a long time to develop, probably as long as our interest lasts on the one we currently play. I myself believe i have been too eager to replace my fav game of all time Daoc. Even trying genre's such as COH and Lineage to replace it. I have no interest in comic book heros and maybe i should have stuck to my views and waited for a game that does interest me like WoW or Warhammer.
Or maybe i've just outgrown mmorpgs and prefer to see the sun and be outside the pub with a pint....heaven
People that want to kick bad guy butt in a variety of ways with or without friends.
Thats it.
No crafting, no houses, no PvP (yet), no uber loot beyond some really nice enhancements at higher levels.
Just the best PvE they could come up with. The characters are hugely customizable. The gameplay is fast and fun, the enemies are relatively varied.
I dont think its perfect. No game is. But its definitely a good alternative to EQ or DAOC in the PvE arena. After this, camping the same mob for six hours, or doing the same Lost Dungeon will not be very appealing.
If you arent interested in crafting, PvP, or having the shiniest sword around (no items to swagger around with), then you might be interested in this game.
Originally posted by En1Gma 3. When was the last time you saw Spider-Man or Wolverine or Captain America sporting a new lvl 32 Magical Helm of Transcendmeditation?
There's your fallacy... a lot of people who dislike CoH are far more concerned with level 32 magical helmets than some Spider-Man or Wolverine guy...
I haven't checked around to see what they will do with Taunt and Provoke. I am afraid it will be totally useless in PvP unless it prevents people from targeting if they have been provoked. Aggro in most games usually just affects NPCs. It needs to work with normal players too or otherwise the tankers will be completely useless in group PvP in CoH.
I mean there gonna add...I think crafting.....a bunch more costumes.....and looks.....mor inspriations and enhancements....
Good vs. evil pvp...
and much more...

EQ has done it for years and it's still one of the most popular games out there. Perhaps the majority of people don't like PVP?
I'm not in the least bit interested in PVP specially in CoH. DAoC is a bad enough example of what happens when you try and balance everything.

this is my first post. i actually signed up for this forum bcos i really felt compelled to clarify all this stuff. there's so many other things i can point out. feel free to criticise fairly.
LittleGreenMan - Justice server - Lvl 17 Mutant Defender
Psiclone - Justice server - Lvl 10 Mutant Tanker

COH has a fairly narrow clientele:

The Illusion of Choice
They have already thought of that.. City Of Villains is an expansion with PVP. I dont know when they will release it :-(
I haven't checked around to see what they will do with Taunt and Provoke. I am afraid it will be totally useless in PvP unless it prevents people from targeting if they have been provoked. Aggro in most games usually just affects NPCs. It needs to work with normal players too or otherwise the tankers will be completely useless in group PvP in CoH.
no player competition = boring game in my dictionary (sorry!!)
Wait for "city of villians"
I mean there gonna add...I think crafting.....a bunch more costumes.....and looks.....mor inspriations and enhancements....
Good vs. evil pvp...
and much more...
