Lamest 'End of Closed Beta' event ever?

DeaconXDeaconX Member UncommonPosts: 3,062
Let me start off by saying I do love this game quite a bit... but....I must say I was quite let down... I remember being in the end of beta for Guild Wars and it was awesome fun... the LotR:O 'event' was merely 'here you're level 50 now... now here's some monsters to kill knock yerself out'... but nothing special by any means.  Nothing truly fun.  Maybe I set my hopes too high... expecting some fireworks over Bree Town or something but... I donno... anyone else feel kinda bored or did I miss something?

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

lol.. I donno I just had a really crap day and was looking very forward to something cool.. some grand party I guess... I'm probably just letting my crap day making it worse than it really was... though I was quite bored other than being able to check out some of the abilities of the Hunter at level 50...

So what did you guys do/experience?

No, nothing spectacular; I did see some fireworks, fought neeker-breekers (lvls 12-50), got promoted to 50, fought elite wights, fought elite Drakes, (50-53) and a super-elite Warg.  Performance ranged from slide-show to pretty OK (to my pleased surprise.)

Not great, but ok.  We'll see what happens when the one final beta to end them all ends.

    That sucks :(

On Brandywine, after some great fights up in North Downs, we headed to the Party Tree in Hobbiton and a dev kept us entertained for hours! There was drunken madness, band jamming with the devs, and my favorite part was the dev kicking us for miles high and far, only to have us run back for more! lol

I was blown away by how stable the game was with 200+ people on my screen, although i am also aware that some crashed a lot.

I was wondering, do you have decent specs on you're pc.

Because iv been looking at the graphics and it looks like you need a good pc for this game

    not to lag/crash

Well, it IS a mmo. What do you expect? Never go by the minimum specs on the box.

I know, i just would like to know what his specs are. I have way over the minimum requirements

but i want to know his specs so i get a general idea of what crashes and what doesnt.

Well, when you stick 200+ people in one little area all fighting the same mob, it will probably tax even the best of systems unless you start dropping some settings like "player detail".

With that said, the game runs amazingly well on lower end systems. My wifes system is an AMD2800+ 1.8Ghz I think, she's still using a GF3 card with 128mb! 1gb ram. It rubs completely smooth on Medium settings and looks awesome.

On my machine, which is still not amazing, but better than hers, AMD64 X2 4200+, 2gb ram, SATA HDD, 7600GT 256 OC'd edition, it runs on Ultra High with the DvD high res graphics and I very seldom stutter, only in populated towns and only for a few seconds. The rest of the time is perfect.

There is a memory leak though and the devs have said that the ultra high textures seem to be part of the culprit, so after 3 or 4 hours of playing it crashes me out... if I drop to "very high" it doesn;t happen anymore.

This game, unlike some recent games, scales really well. It's mind blowing gorgeous on Ultra High and Very High, but it still looks really good on Medium and Low as well! On "Very Low" it starts to look a little washed out, but still very playable with those settings.

Ah, thank you very much for taking the time to reply to me.

I have good enough specs to play it on very high i believe

i got a good graphs card, and alot of ram also. the only game that didnt

play very well on my pc is matrix online in full graphics back when alot of people

used to play. but since then iv updated my computer Alot.

There seems to be one key detail setting that makes a bigger difference than anything else, and often lets you maintain higher graphical settings in very populated times (like last nights events) which won;t happen very often anyway, but here it is.

Under the Advanced Graphics tab, there is a slider for "player crowds". If you drop that down, you can usually maintain high graphics in hugely poulates areas.

Last night, I first tried dropping my graphics to VERY LOW. I still had bad video lag. Once I dropped that "player crowds" slider though, everything got smooth again and I was then able to crank my graphics back up to Very High and at times even Ultra High with HUGE crowds (at times there were literally 200+ players on my screen).

The thing to remember in events like this though is that if you do crash, no settings save, so when you log back in you are in the middle of that chaos and your player detail slider is back up to midway and you'll crash again unless you set it back down from the character select screen. Lots of people were having this issue last night, forgetting that settings don't save upon a crash.

Also, I doubt we'll be seeing much of 200 players in one area ever again :) (Maybe areas like Combe and Bree in the first few weeks...)

I'll also be willing to bet that Turbine watched real closely last night, tracked where there were some issues and are quickly fixing them up for open beta. They have been excellent about this kind of stuff from what I have seen.

I think you'll be fine on High settings, this game is incredibly efficient with it's graphical engine. :)

Yet, this varies also from one system to the next. I think the client overall is still buggy...
I have an AMD X2 4200+, 2 gigs ram, SATA II HDD, 8800GTS 640mb...and no matter what settings I had I would crash, or stutter or hiccup after a patch from earlier this month. Yet, I can run Oblivion full bore,,ALL settings maxed with ZERO slowdown..( was not driver related, no network issues ...no viruses or spyware either...it just was screwed)..Some guy with 4 GIGS and raptor drives complained of too much HDD access and crashes as well..go figure. Yet my friend with a 9800 pro video card and 1 gig did just fine...hehe
There is no doubt the game is gorgeous, and a lot of machines can run it...but just be ready to put some time into configuring it, and hope the leaky client has been fixed..

I think you might have missed something - I had a blast, and it was amazing fighting dragons (sorry - 'drakes') and huge trolls all night.  TO me, it just showed how truly amazing this game can really be, and made me look forward to Friday even more!!!  It was the best 'end of world' event I've ever seen!

When scary things get scared, that's bad...

They might have been drakes, but they were dragon sized drakes :)

    HUGE mobs.

Also, I loved when fighting the wood trolls my whole screen turned a shade of blood red around the borders and got real hazy, the sky darkened and my compass turne dinto the eye of Sauron!

    Was creepy :)

I had a blast as well! The devs gave us a good time imo. I also liked the "dread" factor - very creepy!

For those of you that didn't foray into the Ettenmoors, you missed a ton of fun. We fought for HOURS out there running back and forth from Keep to Keep. Even some Devs came out (+fantus cheated with 1 shot kill moves)...

At one point there were over 150 people and monsters battling it out in front of TA.. caused a bit of lag, or in my case, I got to watch it in slide show form, but it was a hell of a send off. I fnally logged out at 4 AM ET, and the fight was STILL raging at TR, but my head was killing me from hitting the keyboard so many times..
