Hey all,
I, like many of you, have been quite interested in the Top Secret project, which was recently shown in a news article here
http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/1166/page/1
However, now the project is live, and I have had a chance to really read up first hand on this, it seems their ideas of an MMO and ours, are somewhat different.
Firstly, they decided it should have the theme of "Racing". Well, its a tough one, but Auto Assault did it, and there were many many ideas that came forward on how to incorporate Racing into an MMORPG.
Then came the realisation that this wasnt an MMORPG.
You see, what they are trying to make is an Online Racing game. They have a 3d engine already built, and it works like this:
You sign up, you log into a lobby. You chat to people online in the lobby, you click "Search Races", you then find a race, click join, wait for 7 other people to join also (it has a limit of 8 people), then click "Launch" and then do your race. You then go back to the lobby, where you can access a vehicle section and can modify your car.
What the Top Secret team want the people on the forums to do is come up with designs for backgrounds of races, car models, and UI designs (which have to fit into the lobby/shop/launch model).
The finished game will be free to download and play, and revenue will be entirely generated by the use of in game advertising (bill board style).
Alot of people have already said they wont be participating, but still the Top Secret team insist its an MMO. Why? Because they anticipate alot of people will download it (Massive), you get to play against others (Multi) and you play via the internet (Online).
But, at the end of the day, its going to be a free to download, in-game advertising led, online race game. Not an MMORPG in any sense at all.
Just thought you should all be warned before you get too excited.

This title sounds like it's going to fail even before releasing.
I've been rather disappointed with this development lately as well. As if we don't get enough bullshit from political spin in other areas of our lives, we now get fed more bullshit in our entertainment from Top Secret.
It's downright insulting to be honest. Do they really think we are that stupid to not see this for what it really is now?
Oh well. Not that I had a great idea for an MMO myself, but I was looking foreward to seeing what creative MMO developed from this online collaboration.
Racing?? I'd much rather play Mario Kart with my nephew on the Gamecube.

Sounds rather pointless to me and to think David Perry is involved, maybe he will be yet another name that we all hoped would do somthing great with MMORPGs but instead says he will do this and that and then in the end its just the same ol, same ol watered down crap with a few odd differences.
I dont even see the point in this project anyway, it just seems like they are trying to get people to think they are "breaking the mold" when they really arnt. David Perry should stick to 2Moons and make that somthing great, somthing different and most importantly different than the Korean version, like he Promised he would. I have my doubts that, that will happen though.

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, "give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404."
David Perrys first task is to review his latest beta, and win a chance to work with him.
His latest beta is a game called Dance! and is described by him as the first Dancing MMO.
Its a lobby, where you find someone bored, then go and play Dance Mat with them...... thats it.
dance mat. on the pc. without a mat. i guess you could pretend in your chair.
he thinks its an mmo....
more details here kids, get on your dancing shoes! :P http://dance.acclaim.com/
I agree, it's misleading at best, an near flat out lie at it's worse.
If David Perry doesn't know the difference between an MMO and his game Dance!, then I fear for the future of the gaming industry.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
It is not a mmo it is basically a Multiplayer racing game with one small difference your character actually can walk and speek with other character instead of speek to them true a chat window system. WoW big deal rofl.
They turn something really awsome into nothing. So basically there contest was a total waste.
Motor City Online started in 2001 and ended up shutting their servers down in Feb 2003.
Its not an MMORPG...but its one darn good racing game.

Lots of leagues and lots of cars.
John Wood seems to be a little mixed up with his lingo, David Perry never stated this would be an MMORPG. So what exactly are you guys freaking about? It`s still an MMO, its not placed on a seamless persistant world but its an MMO nonetheless.
Yes, before you little kids go searching around and getting your clothes dirty here are a bunch of articles that say MMORPG, not one quoting David Perry. The news people jumped the gun, not DP, not Acclaim, so direct your "frustration" in the proper direction. Poor journalism......if you can even call it that.

As you can see the story is almost identically regurgitated which probably led to the misinformation.
