Originally posted by Mentat As far as the game being boring. Well, this game has a GTA-ish feel to it as far as controlling your charactor but, the customization and uniqueness of powers makes it fun. Also it's faster paced than ..well, say EQ for instance. You don't have to spend forever sitting around doing basically nothing but, waisting hours and hours...days and days making some item so that you can "grind" better... This game skips that sitting around for hours doing nothing aspect.
Give it time then stat your opinion. Alot of the people here posting they are bored are the ones that were in beta and have played a couple of months. As for EQ your right it sucks but now compare that to SWG trade system where you make stuff in 3 seconds and you also will gain 3 levels in crafting in about 30 min. Now do the same for horizons where you can get 10 levels in about 1 hour of crafting. You pick the worst game out to mention. AO is another thats got no down time yet has alot of crafting that instant.
Point here is if you compare it to the worst games out ya CoH might not be a bad game but compared to the better games its boring. Even I wasn't bored after 1 week but give it a month then 2 then you find yourself not even wanting to log in. Thats not good for a pay to play game.
But I am sure they don't care they have already sold over 100k boxes they made there money.
I feel the same way about this game and I havent even got to level 14. I can't stand grinding and grinding and then when I am tired of grinding I grind some more. I read someone earlier on talking about killing an Archvillian. Well that is great, but you dont have anything to show for it you can't even brag about it because there is no proof <loot> that you did it. I also think this game lacks any long term play . There are no crafting abilities, player markets or any equipment. I think they could have done alot better job with this game and the subject matter they had to use. I know that I will not be paying anymore monthly fees for this game.
Personally, I like this game despite what seems to be a lack of depth right now. More than many mmo's out there, the fighting is flat out fun. Checking out all the other unique players can be enjoyable too. Unlocking new powers to play with is fun and a motivating factor to get out there and kill more bad guys. But, it has both good and bad:
Pro's: - Character creation is awesome. - The gameplay is truly fun. - The game is stable. - The game is full of mission related content. - Great tools for grouping and finding groupmates - Easy interface and good tutorial - The enhancements system is good and is working works
Con's: - Difficult to solo past lvl 20 - Seems to have a lack of "end game" - No PVP - Missions get repetitive - No items - No tradeskills or crafting - No marketplace since there's not much to sell

Agree with nearly every post on both sides. I can see how this game could get boring quickly. It's funny, these discussions seem alot like ones I had when SWG first came out. I'm thinking this game needs the City of Villains update quickly, to introduce pvp and give the populous something else to do other than missions. If the process of whooping bad guys wasn't so fun I'd probably stop playing...let's see how long that will be fun though...
I personally think everyone needs to give City of Heroes about a month before saying how boring it is. Yes, City of Villains needs to be implemented soon, but there is still a lot of content in the game without PvP. And you never know what the Devs will come up with for their future "free" updates. There's bound to be one that gives some new and exciting feature
Even though I got bored very quiclky with CoH it does have the best and funnest combat of any MMOG by far. It is so much fun to kick some baddy butt. I personally could care less about the CoV expansion because I hate PvP but it will bring some much needed variety to the game as a whole. I would have preferred a big time addition to the archtypes and powers available. If there were a 100 more powers for your toon to chooses from......then the personality of each character would extend well beyond just the costume. Obviously I hope all future MMOG's take notice at the character costume creation variables because CoH has set a wonderful standard to shoot for. Heck...that was by far the best part of CoH for me! To be able to customize and make a character that would truly look different was great for the ego and very very entertaining!

I heard that this was a really great game but the only problem was the lack of PvP which i heard will be implemented next year or somthign like that. I also heard somewhere that looting is not available i do not know if that is true or not.
Well, I have been playing since April 6 (beta), and I do not find the game boring at all. Hopefully this will be the case for a long time to come.

I agree with all this exept 1 thing I think the ingame help to find groups sucks in CoH. EQ and DAoC have way better setups. A group doesn't take the time to look for people but a person should be able to look for a group thats wanting someone with there skills. Both EQ and DAoC have this and its a great system. EQ only put it in after DAoC came out with it so really they coppied it but I don't have a problem with a MMoRPG doing what works.
It would be great to log in do a search for a group looking for my character and send there leader a tell. Would be faster and would work alot better.
Different strokes for different folks I guess. I've played DAOC, EQ, AO, and AC (mostly the first two). And SB (shivers). I can truthfully say that CoH is the only one I can think of where the opponents had varying abilities and strategies. There are, unfortunately, almost always 'minions' who are just damage pumps and sinks. But the Lieutenants and Bosses have varying abilities that keep the combats fairly interesting. This is also the only game I've seen that makes a good use of instancing. AO and EQ both have very bleah instancing. The missions in CoH are varied in their goals as well as their settings. The instancing makes the game MUCH more fun than the static spawns of other games.
The in game economy (or lack of same), is very superficial. The goal is not for you to look around for a crafter to make your next enhancement, but to let you personalize your powers and get you back on the street fighting bad guys. For myself I like fighting bad guys. There is 'uber' stuff, but it comes from late game taskforce missions, and you cant really wave your 'shiny' around to show off.
I think the game is the anti-twinkers game. Enhancements dont really add THAT much to your character. I think the big recognition factor will be when you demonstrate that you are able to play your archetype. This is not a small thing. Also, the game allows tremendous character customizability.
I can see how certain people wouldnt enjoy the absence of 'shinies'. I basically outfit my characters with the best stuff that I can afford to buy cheaply. I do miss having varied areas to explore. But hopefully that will be in new releases.
As mean-spirited as it sounds, every game isnt for everybody. There are things I dont like (xp debt is irritating, I also hate the kill X mobs missions, lack of supervillains or good bad guy dialogue, there are limited options for reducing video load). But I do still have fun after beta and a couple weeks of play. And I've been starting over so often that I still havent gotten to much of the content.

I've got to agree with the original poster, i found it to get very repetative relativeley quickly. I agree there's a story to the missions, but if all you have to do in the missions is to go around killing stuff then it doesnt matter how good the story is you're doing the same task every mission (be it kill 10 CoT or go to a warehouse to kill big bob, it's still just killtasks).
I think just adding ability to get decent loot or items from some people woudl have helped, ability to go somewhere for a costume change now and then perhaps? I know people say well what would you craft in a superhero mmorpg, well i'm sure batman didn't buy his cool gadgets at this local superstore
I'm sure a lot of people enjoy it, but for me, it's just an arcade game, certainly far from an MMORPG.

You should count yourself lucky because release has introduced alot of problems also they have started bringing out the nerf stick. The last 2 patch's have been full of nerfs also with so many people playing there now having connection problems. I myself am in a trouble ticket connection issue as many others are having the same problem . "Lost Connection to Mapserver" Funny thing is people are not reporting it and complaining so there not going to do anything about it at least thats what they told me.
They have also posted notices up on how to fix current crashing. For a release that was stated to be so stable it really sucks.

They've adjusted what? 4 or 5 powers? This is par for the course in just about any MMORPG. Just be glad they are doing it early in release and not years down the road.
Yes, some people are having connection issues, but as I just posted in another thread, the tech support folks are fairly active on the boards and have posted numerous solutions. Most of which are working for folks.
Overall, I find it hard to believe it's possible to judge a game when it's only 30 days old.

These problems do not affect the majority of the customers. Further, the servers themselves have had only a couple unplanned shutdowns to do some network or hardware maintenance. Basically, outside of the planned downtimes, the game has been rock solid.
Yes it sucks that you may be one of the people that are experiencing problems but your experience is not shared overall and that is why you don't see volumes of material addressing the issue. To interpret that as they aren't doing anything about it is simply incorrect.
I personally feel that CoV and PvP will turn a pro (No pvp) into a con that just may drive me away. I absolutely HATE PvP. PvP will completely change the strategies for killing the Boss'. There will need to be a complete overhaul of the powers. PvP in CoH in it's current state will be nothing more than "he who lands first blow wins"
As far as loot and showing off yer "shinies" You a frickin Super Hero.....your satisfaction is in helping those who cannot help themselves!!!! and you take absolutely NO thanks or credit doing so. And a Super Hero would NEVER under any circumstances accept $$$ for doing good. I think the idea of using Influence as $$ is brilliant. (Kinda like collecting favours and calling them in is how I look at it)
**Edit**
I was just thinking....what would make this game awsome is if we had a secret identity ala Bruce Wayne= Batman.
You could have your own career simulation type game..build up $$$, use tradeskills such as technology...to create cool stuff.....then if ya just wanna kill kill kill...simply go to superhero mode and go kill.....
I've played quite a lot of MMORPGs in my time. I'd say I'm a veteran and a power gamer. What I don't understand is how are you comparing COH to Quake? Did you actually play COH or are you just looking for a way to raise your post count?
An MMORPG is muuuuuuuuuuch more different than an FPS. COH and Quake have absolutely nothing in common whatsoever. Lvl 15 eh? Did you do Synape's TaskForce mission? Obviously not...because if you had then you would have seen the fun in it.
No...no way COH is like quake in ANY aspects. Totally different genres/games need not comparison.
