So you don't need an OS?

No, thats only if you run a 64-bit version of Windows. The AMD Athlon 64 series runs both 64-bit and 32-bit. So the driver support is perfectly fine.

AMD Athlon 64 CPUs can run both 32-bit OS (which uses all 32-bit program drivers) and the 64-bit OS (which uses all 64-bit program drivers).

have you run a windows 32-bit version on a 64-bit processor before? cause my friend says that he had to buy a new version of windows (a 64 bit version) to run it

If you are financially constrained and you don't wanna spend way over your budget, you can achieve good system under 600$ assuming you already have a monitor and DVD burner.

    ---------------------

MOTHERBOARD (always go for socket 775 since it support wide range of CPU type and always leave room for more upgrade):

    I recommend the following:

    P4 S775 ASUS P5L-MX Green 945G PCIE $108.15

    (Manufacturers Product Number: P5L-MX)

    Compatibility: 64-bit, Pentium 4, Celeron D, Pentium D,Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme

Chipset Type: Intel 945G Express / Intel ICH7

    Max Bus Speed: 1066Mhz

Supported RAM: DDRII SDRAM, Non-ECC, 0-4GB Max, RAM Speed (PC2-3200,PC2-4300,PC2-5300)

CPU (I always prefered pentium series P4, PD):

    Intel Celeron D 64BIT 360 3.46G /533 /512K /S775  $87.55

    Intel P4 631 64BIT 3.0G /800 /2M  /S775  $97.85

    Intel PD 915 DC 2.8G /800 /2x2M /S775  $128.75

    Intel PD 925 DC 3.0G /800 /2x2M /S775  $163.77

    Intel PD 945 DC 3.4G /800 /2x2M /S775  $231.75

    RAM (I recommand DDR2):

    Corsair 667mhz DDR2 No-ECC 1024Mb XMS2  $87.55

    Corsair 800mhz DDR2 No-ECC 1024Mb  $122.57

HARDRIVE (You can find all sort here):

If you go for IDE you can find good one (250-300Gig) with $90-$120

    For SATA2: $75-$100

    GRAPHIC CARD:

(this is where you need a bit of investment depending your usage of your PC, if you go graphic intensive (FPS games and such), put some money on it.): $200-400

    POWER SUPPLY: Under 50$

    CASING: Again under 50$

MOUSE, KEYBOARD, SPEAKER: Ask your friend around, I'm sure some of your friends have spare.

    GOOD LUCK !!!

Well when you buy an OS you either buy the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version. So, if you have a 64-bit version OS and a 32-bit CPU you cannot run it, and will need a new one. But in the case of AMD Athlon 64's they can run both 32-bit and 64-bit OS's. So yo would not have to if you have an AMD Athlon 64.

I highly discourage anyone to buy a Pentium 4 processor as they are all obsolete.

I highly discourage from buying any RAM that is 667mhz, you will get MUCH better performance out of 800mhz

I highly discourage from buying a IDE hard Drive, SATA is the new and fastest HD interface

    Graphics Cards are important

DO NOT skimp on the Power Supply, this can make or break your system

Mouse, Keyboard, speakers, ect can be found for under $5 on newegg

If you could suggest a good sound card for Vista home premium, creative have kinda messed up on driver support only cause windows no longer supports directsound or something like that anyway.. correct me if i'm wrong.

Also I'm thinking of getting a new motherboard supporting PCI-express with a BFG graphic card and also the website has a PhysX 128MB PCI card.. anyone got one?

though my biggest problem is what CPU to go with.. I'm upgrading in 2 months so whats the best on the market atm?

    any help will be grand

I'll check into a Vista supported sound card in a moment, but definately get a mobo with a PCI-E alot. AND BFG is a good VGA brand. The PhysX PCI card is NOT worth it. The only games that use it are GRAW and GRAW2. The absolute best CPUs are the Intel Quad-Core Extremes right now. The overall best brand ins the Intel Core 2 Duo, and I personally like the AMD Athlon 64 X2's but the Core 2's are better.

Here is an Intel Core 2 duo system for $700.92 - $15 mail in rebate.  I think it is worth spending the extra 50 bucks to get the intel system that is more future proof than the above listed AMD system.  Intel processors have way more overclocking headroom than AMD should you ever choose to dabble with it.

Also, if you can wait one week till the 19th because that is when intel is expected to cut their prices in response to AMDs recent price cuts.
