title says it all but here is a snippet

LOTRO presents a stunning and evocative world of Tolkien magic to explore - if you're any kind of fan, it would seem pretty much an essential purchase. LOTRO seems destined to become the next big MMORPG contender and we've no hesitation in saying prepare to make your move to Middle-earth - we'll see you there.

I miss DAoC

I guess that's why I will be getting the 199 lifetime sub.

Nice review and a well deserved score. I played the open beta and found the game a bit too linear and the world too small for my taste, but I understand why other people like it.

    ummmm.... ok

Anyway, it seems very well done and polished for a beta ready for release. Early on it is a bit linear but it opens up as you go.

Well....I think this review could not really be considered objective.  Don't get me wrong, I like the game a lot, have pre-ordered and plan to play it for a spell (until WAR comes out).......

But I think 9.2 might be just a tad high.  The game's good...but I'd put it down more like around an 8 to 8.5 max.....

Maybe I just expect a bit more innovation out of a game that's rated 9.2...you know, something that really surprises me ....

maybe such a game can't really exist anymore...but we'll see....

you know what I consider a surprise? A game that does not suck ass and is actually worth the 50 dollar box price. Want innovative there is Autop Assault,  Saga of Ryzom, Neocron, Eve, Faces of Mankind, Roma Victor etc etc. Next big innovation I expect will be a holodeck

After playing the beta id say the game is pretty good. Not 9.2 good though - but definately a good MMO which is quite rare recently. We seem to be getting quite a few really crappy MMO's which are bad games by normal standards never mind requireing a monthly sub.

But LOTRO definately seems like an enjoyable experience and i may pick it up sometime this year, although ive recently reactivated my Lineage 2 account to give the game a proper go

I think it has earned that score. It looks good, plays nicely and is one of those games you really enjoy playing rather than 'endure' playing.

I have to agree with this review in every way. The game is just a shiny gem of polished gamedom. If you enjoy Lord of the Rings, the game is a must have. I have been playing on my new awesome computer that has a crappy onboard card and I can play at a really decent resolution and graphics level with no lag.

Revolutionary? Certainly not, but I really don't need revolutionary. This game is ready to launch and I hope Turbine is prepared for success.

Being a fan of the game myself having tested through all of the closed beta phases on into preorder and openbeta I don't know if I would rate the game as high as they have.  Primarily because its a review of the beta rather than the finished product, and that they havent experienced half of the game at levels 20, 15 and 5.  They state that they powered through to those levels on 3 characters.  Did they only write the review after a week's worth of playing?  I played very casually as I was also beta testing 3 other games at the same time as this yet I still had a level 50 hunter, 28 champ and 26 guardian.

While I think that turbine has done a great job, especially as the beta progressed I just have my qualms about a review that never saw the end game, never saw angmar (came out the last week of closed beta) and never experienced the pvp from the freep side.

Meh, whatever.  Its a solid and well executed game that any gamer should take a look at while it definately wont be for everyone it feels like it should be a worthwhile game especially through the long months leading up to Tabula Rasa, Warhammer and Age of Conan.

9.2 is a fair score imo

It's not perfect but it's damn close ;)

Regardless if it's you're cup of tea or not there's little doubt LOTRO is a solid title.

That being said no MMO yet released deserves a 9.2 score. That would mean You'd have to score high areas in Gameplay, Graphics, Audio, Art direction, level design, character customization, UI & depth of gameplay.

So basicly you'd be talking about a title that cumulatively blows away UO, EQ1, EQII,  AC,  Lineage II, DAOC, Guildwars, WOW Vanguard & EVE away.

That's a pretty tall order to fill friends.

Agree. i think the reviewer may have had his hand in a jar of  LotR fanboydom. Oh well.

    A worthy score,

LOTRO is the best PvE game out at the moment for me. So far I'm enjoying the well-written quests, the exploration, the history, the depth, the style, the story, the combat, the grouping system, the guild system and the crafting system. It hits all the right targets for me; being an old school RPG fan, I guess it isn't suprising.

Most importantly of all, LOTRO revives the old feeling of "magic" I got from playing UO and EQ back in the day. This is the only game that has come close to doing that for many many years. I'm not sure yet how long the magic will last, but for the time being I'm really glad for that old familiar spark. Just for this element alone I would forgive a hell of a lot with this game, but I find myself blissfully not having to forgive much at all.

I hope that dividing my time between this, as a PvE story-driven experience, and WAR when it comes out, as an RvR experience, will make my online gaming life pretty much complete overall. 2007 is going to be such a great year.

    Well done Codemasters and Turbine.

I really don't think I could have said it better mself. For the longest time ive only been hugely disappointed with upcoming games. I went into this beta thinking "Wow...LOTRO name tag, im just waiting for the game to fail expectations".

In the end, I played it, I enjoyed it...it left me with things I felt were missing...but overall...its fun? I could go on forever asking for everything I want in a game, but reality is you cant expect the next big thing around every corner...nor can I ask much more right now for at least being entertained?

    Entertained...I thought mmo's forgot how

Not amazing, not ground breaking, its just something to add to the mix that isn't absolutely horrible.

Also, as a long time reader, I find it interesting Jackdog that you are being positive about a game, it adds to your credibility.

I pre-ordered LOTRO... I am going to still fund them by playing a little until WAR, Spore, AoC.....

I would give it a 6.5-7.0 out of 10.... Loss of points due to - too few classes, Poor PvP (PvM) And of course the same ol same ol... They didn't really do anything innovative.. but it's new and hopefully it will tide me over till something good comes along.

When eq1 came out, I would have given it a 10.

When DAoC came out, eq1 doesnt deserved a 10 anymore.

DAoC to me would have a very high rank.

Now, LoTRO doesnt have much new competition,

so to me, it deserved a high ranking.

And that is of great of importance to me.  I stayed in SWG for to long because of the "potentials" and "possibilities."  For LoTRO, the "potentials" and "possibilities" have substance, at least from my perspective, as the game does not need another year to clean the code up and I  witnessed possibilites become reality in closed beta ( crafting and mounts to start with).
