Ok,,I didn't play open beta...I acutally played closed beta just to get the feel of the game..I liked it it's a game i can see myself playing,But recently i have been browsing on the LOTRO website and i see.."Founder Players will be able to use your open beta charecter in live"..Biggest mistake an MMORPG can make IMO..Why would you possibly do that i usally get into new MMO's to strive for the best charecter or discover some areas first etc.etc. but now that isn't even possible.Am i wrong on this? Somebody please tell me i am wrong.

Yes, you can keep your early access character. Limited to lvl 15 in the US, no lvl limit in Europe.

You're only able to level up until 15 while in beta.  Also, as far as I've seen they don't record discoveries and server firsts as you see in EQ2 and Vanguard.

Only advantage other players may have over you is a little more money to start.  But even that isn't that big a deal.

You are not wrong OP, but I understand where you are coming from. In fact, because the game is still open beta they are still fixing economic problems such as the recent expert farming issue that allowed some folks to accumulate large amounts of gold already. (Fixed last patch).  This has inflated the price of some purple AH items already and a wipe would prevent such problems.

But this is the world we live in. The new players only hope now is to wait until they open up some new servers (perhaps shortly after launch) and start fresh in the new world.

But it won't help all that much, even then there will be too many people who spent 8 or 9 months in the closed beta who will know where to farm and explore. Heck, I think right now, most high level areas in the current servers have been explored already even though 15 is the level cap.  Just takes knowing exactly where to run, which many of these folks do.

I typically feel the same way when playing a MMORPG.  I want to level faster, get farther, more gold...etc.  For some strange reason I don't feel that way playing this game.  I actually read the quests and frequently stop to smell the roses, so to speak.  Why this game puts me in that frame of mind......I don't know.  I just simply don't care if my friends are 10 levels ahead of me or have alot of gold sitting in the bank.  I do carry the founders status and have numerous level 15 characters spread across several servers.  My inclination upon release is to wipe those characters and start over from scratch.  Strange.....not sure if I have changed the way I feel about gaming or if it's just this game.  Time will tell.........

In hindsight, they ought to have capped not only EXP, but also crafting (at master journeyman), and gold (at say 2g).  And truncated the beta to 10 days or so.  That would have solved some of the open-beta-related issues people are having now, in my view.

I never really understood what the big deal was on a pve game anyway; pvp sure... better gear = better chance of being the top pvp player.. but in pve? Surely its just about having fun in the big wide game world

If you played Closed beta you won't be at any disadvantage. You will be able to get  level 15 within 10 hours and be ahead of the newb pack who still don't know what they are doing at level 15. The biggest advantage to being 15 is really just avoiding the rush of newbie characters come the 24th.

The advantage of 15 is really limited beyond the small cash bonus which won't matter in the end since its level 15-20 monters being farmed which are no where near what people will earn from quests come level 30+ etc.

Yes it's a bad idea. It will turn a lot of people off from playing the game if preorder customers get unfair ingame advantages. Just avoid games that stoop this low for preorder sales. It doesn't bode well of how they view a level playing field which is essential in MMOGs.

But everyone can pre-order.  It costs $10 and it's deducted from the game price.  So honestly I have no sympathy for this argument.  If you want to keep up with the Joneses, then pre-order (it costs nothing, as it is deducted from your purchase price) ... the game doesnt change dramatically between Open Beta and Release.  The rest is just the typical "OMG QQ".

I actually pre-ordered for 5 bucks from ebgames. Friend pre-ordered for 10 bucks from bestbuy but none the less gamestops and ebs both offer the 5dollar pre-order.

Man, any game that starts before I buy the game is such poor tactics. Every game should reset the second I make a character there!

    Zomg ima QQ more!!!!

Zomg ima QQ more!!!! Ok. So you go for pure releases at the very start with no open beta (as it's called in the States), no Early Play (as it's called in the EU) and critically, no play at all from anyone whatsoever including closed beta's at the start? Good Luck.

If it really upsets you, apply for beta to games you like the sound of and if you took part in closed beta then take advantage of offers that come up. The game industry needs beta testers and once the code is stable enough stress testing is needed. Hence the open beta and early play allowed. It already highlighted a problem with the EU SAN that is being fixed.
  • Torps, obviously i forgot to put /sarcasm and /sarcasm off for ya there. Figured I exaggerated enough to make it obvious, but must not of.

The inflated prices at the AH are due to the level cap.  Once people start to level, the economy will loosen up

At level 15, there are hardly any in game advantages.   There is never a level playing field in an MMO. LOL

First of all, I'll preface this by saying that Turbine has a soft spot in my heart.  No it isn't from DDO.  Asheron's Call was my first MMO back in 2/2000 and I have yet to find another game that can hold me like AC did.  We all remember our first. :)  I have to give Turbine credit for what I think they are trying to accomplish.  Lets face it folks.  Whether you hate it or love it, WoW is the big white elephant in the room when it comes to MMO's.  You simply can't, as a MMO developement company, ignore the subscription numbers that WoW has.  I'll bet that the management of every upcoming MMO has at some point sat down and talked about those numbers.  After all, those numbers are their goal.  And even though I am having a lot of fun with LOTRO, I can see that there is nothing new here.  They are trying to basically take the successful formula of WoW and port it to The Lord of the Rings.  Again there is nothing wrong with that.  WoW has the subscription numbers because until you get tired of it, it is a fun game to play.  I think that Turbine is taking an aggressive stance to try and at least put a dent into WoW's numbers and I honestly hope that they do.  Not to try and unseat WoW but to open up to those casual WoW gamers, that probably aren't even aware of the other offering's that are available, that there are other games out there and some that they may even enjoy more.  I would love to see MMO's explode across the world.  Imagine a point in time where no matter what game you choose to play there is a large player base to support it.

I don't really think that WoW is in any danger of going bankrupt from LOTRO but I do hope they notice them!
