Infos on the "mage-like class"

Hi there,

i've just read the FAQ of LOTRO and found this:

Q: Can i play a mage or wizard in LOTRO ?

A:  From what is known, there were very few wizards in the whole of Middle-earth through the ages. You will not be able to play a Wizard, but a mage-like class will be available to you.  As Magic plays such a special role in the Tolkien lore, we are taking great care to provide players with the abilities they expect, within an appropriate context for the Tolkien mythology.

I'm not sure whether to buy lotr or not, but i'd do it, if there are lots of things about magic, as this aspect interests me most.

Unfortunately i don't know what this mage-like class is,  lore-master comes close to it, or is this a complete new class that is not listed on the gameinfo ?

Can anyone tell something about this ? Is this maybe a new class which will come in future ?

Thanks in advance for your answers

Yep, pretty sure the OP is looking for the Lore-Master. He is purely control. He has stuns, a pet to help control areas, a bit of AoE and some other stuff dealing with nature.

I think it is a great substitution since the only Wizards were the colors and they are Tolkiens version of Deities.

Nods.. they probably eluded to the Lore Master.  I have seen iterations of mage to fill the role of a nuker, ranged dps.  In LOTRO, the ranged dps role is filled by a Hunter (or perhaps archer would be a more accurate title).

Loremaster plays like an Enchanter from EQ I (if that measn anything to you) more than anything else I'm familiar with.  He can't turn into furnature or anything, but his basic role is the same.  Crowd control, "meh" DPS, "meh" pets, plus a "meh" heal (to make up for the inability to become furnature I guess..).   The total is somehow greater than the sum of the parts, it's actually a pretty fun class (will likley be my main).

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Yeah that is the Lore Master. The previous posters have hit it spot on but to clarify why they word it the way they do.

In Tolkien, actual magic was limited so they have to remain true to that lore. Given that, they also want to satisfy gamers who want to magic nuke something with the Death Bolt of Doom. So the Lore Master has various "nature control" spells and the nuke is actually the Lore Master fishing into his pocket for oil/rags/ a bit of gunpowder and throwing it at the mob.

But to all intents and purposes, it's the Death Bolt of Doom.

The real "nuker" of LotRo is the Ranger.... massive damage at a distance...but they aren't spells of course...

Agreed! A friend of mine plays the hunter class. He's in need of heals often.... it's always the nukers.
