Two words - polished and bugfree. That's pretty much it.
Give it a few weeks to actually settle. Newly released games almost always bump up to the #1 spot for awhile and then dip down (or hold steady). I'm guessing that the reason for that is the fans of the game are quick to bounce on the rating to keep it up for awhile.
I have no doubt LOTR will be an entertaining game for the casual gamers and, well, the casual gaming market is huge.

Sad state of affairs when bugfree is a term that doesn't get applied often to MMO's.
On a side note, never have I seen the word "polish" thrown around so much as when people describe LOTRO. Its like a mantra or something. I mean, I played the beta, and polish was never a word that came to mind. Mediocre, generic, "me-too"... those are words that came to mind. If polish means pretty graphics, then so be it. Pretty graphics do not make an MMO good though.
Equal opportunity troll.
I can't believe anybody takes that rating seriously. The MMO on top is whichever publisher employs the most shills.

My apologies but In 2007 pretty graphics are part of what makes an MMO great. Those who poo -poo graphics are usualy playing something that looks like butt salad.. Nonetheless I see you're point , polished is the 2006 / 2007 buzz word for mediocre. Polished is an excuse for lack of imagination or wow factor..
I blame the VG debacle since because of it anything that actually runs like it's supposed to all of a sudden deserves a 9.0 or 10.0 score.
I've yet to see a title released worthy of a 9.0 much less a 10.0. It seems our expectations of what constitutes great have been clouded by mediocre titles.

LOTRO has had a nice smooth release. Call it bugg free, or polished, whatever. WoW amd LOTRO should be the example of how to release a game properly. What the game my lack in content, makes up for with a great IP and a great opening product. The game is merely a few days old and people are talking badly about it cuz it's a bit of the same ol' thing. Very true, but don't deny that the devs did an excellent job. Don't complain about content. If you read the dev boards in the game forums you know that this is just the begining for LOTRO. I would n't be surprised if you saw an expansion in 6 months, and a steady flow of content to be added as time moves on. I enjoyed the beta very much. A lot of WoW type stuff in it, but I enjoy the lore a bit better than the toonish WoW. Lets see what LOTRO looks like in a few months. I guarentee that it will be better than VG. All I can say is, "Well done Turbine, good job bringing the IP to us. Lets hope you can keep it up in the following months."
This pretty much happens whenever a new game is switched to release status. VG:SoH was up there, and look how that turned out.
Anyways, these rankings are based on the more hardcore crowd, not the mainstream. If you're a casual player that's new to the genre and looking for a fun game, WoW would be #1 on the list. However, a lot of people here hate WoW just because it's popular, so it's ranking suffers.
MP is pretty unique, and traita let you customize your character to a good degree. Other than what was already mentioned that's all I can think of.

Well it is much like Wow, easy to play, has good graphics, is easy on the PC requirements, few bugs and it does have that Tolkienesk feel to it.
How many MMO's are like that at release? Not many. It still lacks content of the older MMO's, only time will change that.
Lots of people have been looking for something new, none of the present MMO's seem to be able to offer much change.
Play EQ2, it has more content, more features, more things to do, and a solid comunity.
LOTRO will keep you amused for 2-3 months, then you will move on.
All top rated games go on top the first days. But after a while they start falling

It's all depending on taste. That's why i hate the fact that everything is compared ot WoW mostly.I play LOTRO now but if you asked me 3 months back if i would i would've laughed and said nah thx.I tried the 10 days play out of being bored and wanting to see what it was like.To my surpirse i liked it verry much so bought the game anyway in the end.I have played lots of mmorpgs including WoW and EQ2.Both did not appeal to me in any way.I can't say why because they both are good games.LOTRO on the other hand does appeal to me verry much.I can not say what makes it different this time instead of WoW or EQ2 , the only thing i can say it's been a long time - DAOC - since i did not look at my xp bar to see when i'd hit the next level and start thinking at what rate i would need to go to get lvl 20-30 or max level. That alone proves for me that i find it fun to play.
But as others mentioned it'll probably go down in rating in a few weeks.
