Just checking in on the remaining AO players

LinchpinLinchpin Member Posts: 82

Hey whats up?. Its been a long while since ive played AO. I was considering coming back for a month or so but am unsure. I like it back in the day even while it was buggy :D. I just couldnt find myself in a sci-fi atmosphere at the time. Now I got that itch back.

Just want to know from the current players is it worth coming back? How many players? will I feel like im in a barren world or will I have people to group with?

Well a lot has changed since SL came out.  If you are looking to do missions teams will be hard to find.  I personally dont like SL.  But you might like it.  SL should have been called EQ V1.5.

That which does not kill you only makes you stronger.

I too have taken an extended leave from AO. How are things going? Are there still a lot of players online?

  • TrigeminalTrigeminal Member Posts: 7

I just came back to AO from a 1+ year vacation in other games.. (DAoC, CoH, SB) and I'm loving it. AO is probably one of the best PvM games out there at the moment in my humble opinion. Both my friend and I are glad to be back in RK-1

Well I must admit alot of these patches they have came out with have peaked my interest agian in the game... Blah I told myself I would never come back too, cause of SL..

Anyways for anyone who still plays, how is the poplualation looking and how is the pvp now?  Guess if I try this game agian It will have to be on RK1.. :(

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

RK1 is still full of people, no idea about rk2

High lvl PvP can be alot of fun, still laggy tho.

Low lvl PvP is just twink wars as always.

I just reactivated my account because of the Spring promotion. I decided to start over from scratch on RK-1 to get the SL experience. So far, I must say that I am enjoying myself. Personally, I like SL. Its something a little different than what I experienced on RK a couple of years ago.

Anarchy Online is still going strong. Currently FunCom is developing a new expansion pack, Alien Invasion, which will introduce gigantic player cities and new fast-action combat. It looks like they have received a fresh transfusion of blood, as they have literally millions more in dollars from investments to develop Anarchy Online and future upcoming games. Funky eh?

I play on RK2.  The game in its self is ok.  The graphics could certainly use some work, a refresh in this area could certainly clean things up a tad.

I think my major issues with this game was the support.  The tech support I received for quite a number of issues was terrible as was their knowledge base for online help.

This game is ONLY a high level game... there are very few newbs here.  Twinking and playing new classes can be quite fun if you have the $$$ to do so.  But the real game only truely now exists at the very high levels.

Lag is bad in PvP...  I have a 5 Meg connection, ATI 9800 Vid Card and a Gig of RAM and still find it laggy at reduced graphics quality...  ah well it can only get better.

Well i left AO, again, I have been in and out since beta3 but SL jost broke the game soo hard for me.

    Alien invasion then?

    1. My guild started loosing people before I left even, to the big guilds, comment always was "well when AI comes we are going to need to be in a big guild". SL allready tore many small guilds apart due to the fact that one never really met anymore. Only the big guilds with a lot of ppl in all lvl ranges could survive that. (yes i know many small guilds did outlive it, but I dare bet most got hit by SL in bad way somehow).

    2. Unless they quadrouple their server power and bandwidth AI is going to be lika playing MYST, a slideshow. Game can barely hold 60ppl in a tower fight, (in fact it cant). Add an unpresedented amount of monster to that equation and you might as well pull the plug.

In any case it will be interesting so see how this goes. I got an advice for FC though:

People whos guild fall apart will most likely leave the game rather then start looking for a new guild. This happened with SL and by all probability will happen again.

AO don't have the playerbase to support another expansion with more land.

SL made RK totally deserted (except in the big cities) and with AI the playerbase will be even more scattered..

There are also tons of bugs and imbalances that FC totally ignore now because they are working on AI and that exactly what FC did when developing NW and SL too...they never learn, not even by their own mistakes...

AI have some interesting things tho, but I need more info before I even thinking about reactivating account to try it.

    Notum Wars = Forced PvP

    Shadowlands = Forced Camping

    Alien Invasion = Forced PvM

    Where will it end?

We do not ignore bugs and imbalances. Of course, it's always a matter of priorities, but while some bugs and balance conerns haven't been addressed yet you can hardly say it's a general rule.

AO is still fun. It IS a bit hard to find a team these days, but IMO, it still offers the best MMORPG experience. I don't feel forced to PvP or camp or anything else for that matter.  Come back and see for yourself.

Alien Invasion appears to only utilize the land already available. Player cities will be on Rubi-Ka in the same zones you are all familiar with. By the way it seems they have also just recently released a patch.

I would call it the general rule that you guys ignore the imbalance and bugs and concentrate on new expansions instead.

You fix some bugs ofcourse, but very often you rather ignore it and hope players will adept and just live around the bugs.

Start a poll on official forum and ask if players want you to concentrate on fixing bugs, balance the game, improve lag or work on the new expansion (I understand that you can't start that ofcourse since if the poll would be a disadvantage for FC then you would be forced to put patch aside and improve the actual game instead)

(All 'you' are Funcom ofcourse, not to you directly Cz)

I see many people talk about it's hard to find a group. Do you think it would help if Funcom put in a new "Looking For Group" type interface? Something similar to was EQ did in Lost Dungeons of Norrath. Let you flag yourself as LFG, then let you search for other people LFG, or search for teams that are looking for more members. Likewise it would allow teams search and pick from the list of people LFG. Unless there's already something like this?

There are LFG channels, but I don't hthink they are used much..

I don't know how hard it is to find groups, I always teamed with my guild so was never looking...

IF it's hard then FC maybe should redo the LFG channels abit so they work all over the world and not only in that zone and maybe even make it possible to teleport to another character faster so teams can be built easier. Teleporting should only be possible in lower lvl zones ofcourse.

They have pretty good transportation system in AO when you get abit higher lvl and learn it, but maybe something need to be done for new players and/or players at lower lvl (under lvl 100 or so)

Funny... I don't lag anymore in AO. I remember I used to when I played during the first year after release. I still find alot of people in RK-1. The thing is they are now spread over RK and SL so it gives the appearance of fewer players.

I know for a fact you read the suggestion forums on AO boards Cz, :)

How many threads are there in that forum asking for easier ways to pull a team together after an accident, someone dieing for example, and a LFG channel that serves a purpose? Fixing the SL "summon member" nanos would be a good start, I have never seen em used even cause finding the spot were you "tied" can be tiresome, not to mention a LD will destroy the tie.

Then again I dont know why I am bothering as I no longer play, and as chances my guild still exists when AI comes, (read above and commetn that pleases), is slim to none I doubt i ever will..

I shall give you a heads up though, the need for a "big" guild comes AI is more or less a certainty to most players, even if no one knows if it is true or not, at least not for real. But if left unadressed that one will cause you trouble.

    Umbrood. (Barimen of RK2)

I know that the transportation is good, but if you are saved in a garden in SL then it takes some time for a low lvl to get to town.

How far you have to go?

You have to go far enough so you make sure you don't lose any players that are starting game just because they don't know anyone or can't find team.
