What should I play until EQ2 comes out?

BrackharBrackhar Member Posts: 3

So... yeah. I've become officially hooked by the EQ2 community. I regularly check mmorpg.com now with hopes of increasing my chance to get into the beta, I went out and bought a PCGamer magazine for the first time in four years, and I scour the rest of the web looking for more contests to get into the beta.

It really is starting to drive me mad, and as such the question I pose to you is this: what should I be playing until EQ2 comes out? I'm looking for a rock-solid online RPG experience, but I hesitate from buying another MMORPG and only playing it for three months. Can any of you suggest a fun, free/beta online RPGish style game to occupy my time? As long as there is no monthly fee I wouldn't be opposed to making an initial purchase, if you felt it was worth it.

I know exactly what your going through... imageimageimage

Im just going through demos of games and trials for other MMORPGs..

  • ramadinramadin Member Posts: 1,304
Yeah Im going through the same thing too.  Pretty much just playing demos, trials, and even gone back to Day of Defeat, and Diablo2.  Besides that, after playing EQ for 3 years I tried 10 other MMORPG's and nothing even compares.  I would just piddle around with some offline games and demos or trials for now.  I think EQ2 will be out late September (if they hope to compete with WoW at all).

Laying in bed, looking up at the stars, a single thought passed through my head. Where the fuck is my roof?

Played Knight Online beta for a while...but that got boring.  Your right... I've yet to find anything that compares to EQ.  I haven't played for over a year now and I sooo miss it ... cant wait for eq2 to get going and *crosses fingers* I'd love to make it in to beta image

Im such a rollercoaster when it comes to times like this. I first tried to get back into DAOC. That lasted 3 days and I was so bored I wouldve rather stuck a fork in my ear. Then I tried playing Diablo 2. Lasted 30 minutes because I got sick of the spam in the chat for ebay junks. I went out and bought a copy of city of heroes. Now my account sits there, cancelled and installation CD burned, tarred and feathered ( needless to say the game was horrible and empty).

Now, I am playing Sacred. A diablo 2 rip-off with much more RPG elements . GREAT single player game. Horrible online.image

    Currently I think I'll be working on Dungeon Siege, since I never beat it the first time around. That should keep me occupied for a bit. What other games do you guys suggest, though? Dungeon Siege will probably only last me a week. ^^;;

For an MMO i play CoH (not the greatest game, yet still fun to jump into for maybe half an hour)

For an FPS i got Call of Duty (multiplayer is great when you have servers with 50 people.

Other than that that's pretty much all i got. The rest of my time is spent outside of cyberspace. You know, in the real world image

Well my plan was to play ffx11 till it came out, that was a HORRIBLE idea.  FFX11 SUCKS. Id recomend playing some good old fashioned final fantasy tactics on the gameboy. Personally i have fun just visiting sites and reading up on eq2.  I wish my eq acct wasnt hacked

If you want a really good SP game, try Silent Storm. One of the best games I have played in a while. If you liked X-Com, you'll LOVE this game.

Also for a SP FPS game I recommend Far Cry. I bought it for MP but that sucked, I never buy FPS for their SP but this game really surpised me. I could not stop playing it. I also recommend playing it on its hardest setting for full effect.

Played EQ for 5 years and all my friends have since moved on.  Just isnt the same anymore.

I'm so in the same boat.  looking for something to hold me over as well.  I've been playing Horizons.  Just not the same though.  One can only tradeskill so much in the game before you burn out on that too.

After 5 1/2 years in EQ, watching many of my friends move on to real life or other games, it started to wear thin. I am currently involved in SWG. I have made some great new friends there. However, the constant state of the game makes it hard to be pleased with the overall performance. My new friends are the only reason why I actually have any fun there.
I, along with about a dozen people I know, are all planning to join EQ II when it releases. That is, unless I win a Beta trial.
I pop into EQ from time to time to see how my old guild is going and how many of my friends are actually still active there, but it just isnt the same anymore.
When not online, I just break out Dungeon Siege or Alpha Centauri and enjoy some solo time.

I can honestly say i am a MMORPG addict, normal games just dont fill that gap now....  i was spoiled by things like online communities, content, and monthly fees (never liked that partimage) But i have been playing the demo for Join Operations: Typhoon Rising, and its kinda like Battlefield and it keeps me occupied. But nothing seems to deliver that experience you get when you first log into a new MMORPG... sigh.... I cant wait for Everquest 2!!

Before Horizons was released, I am sad to say that I was really hyped for its release.  I joined a guild before the game was released to help pass the time.  I trolled so much that I could have sworn my skin was turning green.  I was so frustrated and bored that I was about to start playing EQ again.  I even asked in the guild forums on what game I should play to pass the time.  Someone in the guild gave me some really good advice.  The catch to MMORPGs is all about not getting burned out on them and the anticipation to want to play.  If you desperately want to play an online game that isn’t out yet, don’t play another MMOG while waiting.  I know this advice sounds kind ridiculous, but it actually worked for me.  I just played some single player games or I would read some books, etc.  This way when the game was released, I didn’t have to stop something I already started with another online game.

This may not work for everyone, but it seemed to help me when Horizons was released.  Needless to say, I don’t play Horizons anymore.  *grin* It wasn’t the waiting that caused me to not want to play.  It was the game itself.

There are a lot of single player games out that are fun.  As of now, I’m playing a lot of Warcraft 3.  It usually takes me a few hours to complete a few custom games.  Morrowind is also a very time consuming game that can take some free time off your hands.  Just about all the Final Fantasy games can take up some of your time also.

I hope this helps you deciding on what you want to play while waiting with the rest of us.  This advice may not apply to a lot of the online gamers, but I think it is sound advice.  Of course there is always trolling, if you don’t mind the slight greenish skin and the lack of dates.  Contrary to popular belief, you don’t get innate regeneration when becoming a forum troll. *grin*

Makes total sense to me :)

I, like you have started to get the greenish tint to my skin as well image  I've started playing spellforce and empire earth gold to take the edge off.

There definitely seems to be a huge deficiency of good mmorpg around these days. I've been doing the same lately hoping something will keep me occupied until the end of the year (when a ton of games will come out). Games I've tried lately....

Horizons, very disappointing to say the least. weapons and armor don't decay so basically kills crafters. graphics are a 5 out of 10, mobs are pathetic, and nobody is ever on-line.

Aseron's Call 2, pathetic graphics and I tried it based on its 9.9 graphic score here. Boy were they way off, looked like Diablo 2. I didn't play more than 10 minutes, can't stand really bad graphics in a game.

Eve, pretty nice graphics but steep learning curve. I got lost during the tutorial. I asked around for help byt the other players were too busy discussing other games to help. Also hated the fact that I could never leave my ship. I had imagined going to spaceports and hitting the cantina for a brew and some chatting but sigh will never happen with that game.

SWG, loved it for first month simply excellent graphics and exploring was very cool. After that, game gets really boring and too many young griefers around who enjoy KS and griefing. Spend 6 hours looking for a giant dune kimo, another 15 min battling him only to lose looting rights to some punk who took up the latest overpowered profession (rifleman) because the combat revamp has been put on hold. KS and camping latest dungeons is rampant. Finally, space expansion got me to quit. We were promised by SOE that expansion would 1.) be free (its not)  2.) would include more planets like Hoth, Degaboh, etc (it won't)  Its pathetic that SOE won't fix the game's content on planets but can find the time to release dungeons catering to powergamers when SOE CLEARLY STATED THAT SWG WOULD BE DESIGNED FOR CASUAL GAMERS, LIES LIES LIES. For god's sake, half the nps's you talk to are still broken. Gungan sacred place has been busted since day 1 and continues to be. Pathetic, SOE absolutely pathetic.

CoH, nice for about 1 week then gets old. There's nothing to do but combat. No crafting, no houses to own, no real loot, no place to socialize, just not much there. Graphics are nice, but game is hollow.

Sigh, please don't let SOE screw up EQ2.

Well, UT2004 is a pretty fun fps, especially when you are on line. I usually play instagib/ lowgrav bombing run. Its passes the time away.

I know how you all feel!  My hubby and I both played EQ for about 4 years, and none of the other games even compare to it.  We've played them all, and been in a couple other Betas, Rysom, Liniage II, and even City of Heros.  We can't wait for EQ2!!

That kinda makes sense, but I would do it for another reason. Maybe everyone else out there can pay all the monthly fees easily, but some of us need a bit of time to save up money. I would say find something else to do, like get a job, so that you can afford to play eq2. If you already work full time and money is not an issue, I'd say go get a new game. There is so much good stuff out there right now. I'd like to give COH a try for one. Best of luck with it all.

I played EQ for almost 5 years and had to quit because of the dreaded now ex husband and figured it was about time to see what the real world was like. Then realizing no other mmorpg has compared to it. I cant seem to hold interest in any of them. Played SWG for awhile got really bored, saga of ryzom got bored, and various other ones. Diablo is the only thing I will play but I can go awhile not playing it and it doesnt call me like EQ did.

But Im definately getting WoW when it comes out cause with sony's rep they say release date october but Im sure that means Jan 05 image
