My vote is for Everquest.
Through almost 3 years of playing Everquest, I have enjoyed it more than any other mmorpg I have ever played.
Although I quit, I still think about re-activating my account again. It is just too dated and missing some new features that I have grown to love (player economy, roleplaying, freedom to change character professions and/or stats, open PvP).
Many mmorpgs have looked at Everquest and borrowed features and expanded or modified them to make a success of the new game. Not many mmorpgs have been as revolutionary and have evolved into such an expanse, immersive world as Everquest has with Norrath.
Anarchy Online
Im in a roleplay guild and we are 100% in character.
In no other mmorpg can I level up more then once per group, even at somewhat high levels.
In no other mmorpg can I just hangout in a club or bar and have a live DJ (internet radio) throw a big party with tuns of people dancing and having fun.
Anarchy online has little to no downtime between fights
Many classes, each totally unique in their skills
AO has a combined fanasy/sci-fi style. Where I can weild a sniper rifle, shotgun, assult rifle, swords, daggers, laser swords/daggers, magic, pets, robots, you name it.
A good pvp system with land control aswell
AO is the game for me

Nominated Games so far:
1. Star Wars Galaxies
2. RuneScape
3. Anarchy Online
4. Asheron's Call
5. EverQuest
The most important MMORPG ever has been Everquest. It brought the genre into the mainstream and set the mechanics for all future MMORPGs to either copy or deviate from. It is the golden yardstick.
So my vote is for EQ.
Most innovative since then? SWG.

Played these MMORPG's:
AC1/AO/DAoC/EQ/ATITD/AC2/FFXI/UO
Beta'd: RYL/SWG/E&B
Played these MMORPG's:

IMHO: Depends on what you treasure most in a game:
If PVP:=> Wait for guildwars (at least in E3 in it's alpha state it was already a gem)
If Exploration:=> AO is exceptional in this department! At least in Rubi-ka there were plenty of lush environments with all sorts of bizarre creatures! Shadowlands has some interesting areas as well, but cannot vie with rubi-ka, since it lacks the sheer surface area.
AC, DAOC, AC2 cannot compete with AO in this deparment (Imo)
WoW also seems to have the square area and ambiance needed to be a true exploration precedent (L2, FFXI might as well but I haven't tried them)
RPing: Heard AO has some guilds left, but while I was playing it was RP barren. If people are still playing NWN then go to Narfel! If it is still up then it is by far the RPers paradise!
Crafting: Never interested me so I have no clue ; x
Best gameplay and all around (the latter criterion weighter): (Of RO, DAOC, AC&AC2, AO, EQ,GW(alpha state)) => AO
Just my humble opinion.

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
Anarchy Online is the best, imo.
I've left this game for 3 times, but finally, I'm come back
Lineage: The Bloodpledge
It's the largest MMORPG in the world, and was released years before Everquest. It's the game that got all other MMORPGs started.

My first MMORPG was Ultima Online and i came in on the Beta and stuck with it till 99'... i canceled my subscription in 03'.
The BEST PVP system during 97-99' era, no mmorpg has come close to what this game accomplished during those years... even to this date.
Kudos to the Golden Years of UO and to all my PKing Buddies on Chesapeake.

It was certainly fast and furious back then. PKing actually became somewhat of an art for a few of the major PK guilds. Heck, sometimes the PKs didn't even loot your corpse! That was definitely special.

Everquest is Da Best hands down, but I would have to say UO was the best before EQ, and it really was awesome for a few years, but I haven't played a better over all MMORPG since EQ came out, and I have tried most all of them, they just didn't do it for me! I just hope EQ2 does it for me cuz I am totally burned out on EQ!
