Middle-Earth - Which character do you like best?

MeridionMeridion Member UncommonPosts: 1,495
From all the characters you ever encountered in Tolkiens universe, tell me - as there is no off-topic Middle-Earth board - which one do you like best?

- For me, it's definitely Lúthien, I think she's the essence of passion and light and actually doing something to make things right, unlike other characters (like Galadriel, or Cirdan...)

    See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

This may sound generic... But...  Gimli.  In some ways there is so much humour in every dwarf.  Even if they don't mean to

Does anyone of you know which - darn, i don't know the english word for this, it's too old I guess - ... clan (?) Legolas is from, he's been there in the first battle of the ring and probably before that in the age of the shadow. Would be nice to know, they say he's the prince of Rhovanion, the Mirkwood, so he would be one of the Laiquendi who Left Ossiriand... is this confirmed.

I find this funny since these Elven people don't at all represent the actual elven high-culture with packed and "armed to the rim"-warriors living in huge white cities or even in halls of stone...

    Just a thought,

He is a Sindarin from Beleriand.

His father and grandfather (and maybe, if he was already born, Legolas ) moved to Mirkwood in the beginning of the 2nd age. Because of them being from a higher elven culture than the Silvan elves of the forest, they were accepted by them as their "Royal Family".

  • Finrod Felagund.

He went to his death defending Beren against Sauron all because of a promise he made to Beren's father and no other Noldor  would help him and he saw no real opportunity for success.  Broke his chains and killed a werewolf barehanded to save Beren but was mortally wounded.  Now that's a man.  THE man.  Paying his debts, laying it on the line.

Legolas was the son of the king of the elves of Mirkwood who were dark wood elves ie. neither Grey elves/sindar nor light elves/elves returned from Valinor who stayed because they didn't want to leave the forests they loved.  Although I believe Legolas' father was a Sindar lord.

So Legolas is half Avari and half Sindar? Still a funny combination... Reminds me of the guy who played Glorfindel in the movies. He was a Vanyar lookalike still he has a Noldor heritage. Well; I guess Glorfindel IS special, released from Mandos' halls and reborn, seen the world from Cuivienen to the fourth age n stuff...

EDIT: Finrod Felagund btw would probably be my next one on the list. Oh yeah, and most hated would be curufin, Feanor's son, what a bitch....

I've never seen Legolas' mother mentioned I am unsure if she would be Avari or Sindar or something else.  I always assumed he was raised in Mirkwood and essentially Avari.  His real age is never really said but it seems unlikely that he was not  born before the fall of Beleriand and probably never had any exposure to Melian the Maia, which is essentially what made the Sindar special.  The best he could have had was some extra wisdom passed on from the small number of Sindar nobles that ruled the Mirkwood Silvan elves.

So I guess half and half is the best approximation, even if he is a full blood Sindar.

In a sense they are all about Beren and Luthien.  Tolkien viewed that cycle as the "kernel" of the entire mythology.  It says Beren on his tombstone and Luthien on his wife's.

There is a collection of a bunch of notes and not-so finished stories published and analyzed by Christopher Tolkien that I have never read.  Like 12 different volumes.  Wikipedia has the list.

I dunno Feanor got completely bitched out by Melkor and then beat down like a dog by balrogs.

Fingolfin is the biggest badass in my opinion.  After the Battle of Sudden Flame when he goes into a fit of rage and despair he takes all comers all the way up to the gates of Utumno, even the Balrogs wouldn't mess with him.  He even manages to permanently cripple Melkor, a Valar, in single combat.  He even inspired fear in Melkor, supposedly the only time a Valar has known fear.

For sheer pure badassness I don't see how any non-Valar/Maia can top Fingolfin.  The march over the ice of Helcaraxe and the battle with Melkor.  Compared to Feanor bitching out his own kin and taking the easy way with ships and then being a complete boneshead and dying to Balrogs.  One cripples Melkor the other gets mortally wounded by Gothmog with no real result.   I think its pretty clear who the bigger badass is.

I liked Feanor's personality though, he was how to put it...fiery. Yeah purely fiery, both for good and bad.

I prefer Fingolfin.  Complete fidelity and unselfishness and still a complete badass.

But that is why Tolkien rules.
