EQ2 or LOTRO?

Max_StrikerMax_Striker Member UncommonPosts: 263

Im interested in a new MMO, im playing only CoV atm and i want a second MMO to play along. After some search i finally decided that it should be LOTRO or EQ2 but i cant really decide wich suits me best. I like both solo and group playing, more PVE but i like some PVP often, specialy at high lvls, also like crafting and housing, pets and mounts. Character customization is important as well as overall graphics. Looks like the biggest problem with LOTRO is the lack of PVP and the reduced number of races and professions, housing would be appreciated too. With EQ2 the fact that it belongs to SOE that I HATE! It is a bit too group oriented and some textures are too artificial. Besides that i could not see any major problem with both games but still cant decide what to try first and for that i would like some opinions of ppl who had contact with one or both games. For those who had the lucky to play pre-CU SWG or at least pre-NGE, that is my kind of game! Grrrrrrrr I really hate SOE!

Thanks guys!!

I would suggest LoTRO because it's a game that was just released and probably few players at endgame. Therefore there will be many more players needing to complete earlier quests. I also hear that LoTRO has musical  instruments (like AC2). They are both WoW clones though. I believe EQ2 has a free trial where LoTRO is too new and doesn't have a trial yet.

If you liked SWG pre-cu, maybe what you would prefer to play another sandbox MMO. Eve Online and Ryzom seem to be the refuges of many SWG pre-cu veterens. They both have free trials.

How can EQ2 be a WoW clone?  It came out before WoW!

I have played them both.  I am playing the heck out of LotRO right now.  I like it better.  EQ2 is good too.  But I just like LotRO the most.

And just to let you know.  LotRO is not a WoW clone.  About the only thing they have in common is the interface.  Other than that there are tons of differences.  Don't believe that if anyone tells you.  Check the LotRO boards and you'll see how different it is.

Technically EQ2 is not a WoW clone in that it was released earlier. I meant EQ2 is a WoW clone in a general sense. WoW is the monster of fantasy MMO's and fantasy MMO's will compare themselves to it. If someone asks me what I think of EQ2 I'm going to say a WoW clone ( I guess I could say EQ2 is similar to WoW and the same point will get across). When someone quits WoW and decides to plays EQ2, the similarities will be evident, especially the quest system.

I did play LoTRO a little in beta. But not when it was near launch. It looked a lot like WoW when I played it and is definitely fantasy based.

Than wouldnt it be that WoW is an eq2 clone? :P

Anyways, I played both games and would still rather play EQ2,  not saying LOTRO isnt any good, it has good graphics and concept, it just fails to hold my attention I spose.

To be technical, the Realms Online was probably the first graphic MMO. But EQ would probably be the standard that other devs copied.

Just give both games a try (free trial or buddy key) and pick the one you like best.

For me I played EQ2 then quit it to play WOW... quit wow and went back to EQ2.. quit eq2 again to play lotro beta and then release... I have now cancelled my lotro account (goodbye founders pricing :( ) and am going to start playing EQ2 again... The new expansion coming out for EQ2 looks rather appealing and the latest update brought a new race which I might give a try so I should have some enjoyment for several months to come.

I played LotRO through beta and it's a good game. It's pretty easy, or at least starts that way, and it's pretty and stays true to the Tolkien universe. It was too simple for my tastes, and too limited, but I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy it, and Tolkien is my favorite lore, with Greyhawk being a close second. I love EQ2 because it has so much to offer, and it just keeps getting better.

Here's something I keep seeing in the EQ2 forums: "As an aside, LOTRO might be the best advertisement for EQ2 - time after time I see missing features and things that are poorly done (such as the itemization, crafts, and player selling), and the most common example of how it "should" have been done in chat and forums is EQ2 SMILEY:D"

Direct quote from a LotRO player.

"Granted thinking for yourself could be considered a timesink of shorter or longer duration depending on how smart..or how dumb you are."

I'm another one heading back to EQ2 after a month in LOTRO.

    Reasons:

I like social MMOs, and LOTRO doesnt do enough to make people need/want  to group pften enough for me.

    The quests are too simplistic.

Character models are too simplistic, tend to all look too similar, and they dont look right when they move (they dont swagger).
  • Max_StrikerMax_Striker Member UncommonPosts: 263

I see, well customization is important imo, so is movement and animation, ill give a try at EQ2 for sure at least the trial but im confident im gonna like it. LOTRO might be a good game too but  not as complete as EQ2, i have to say that i prefer the idea of conventional weapons instead of a lot of magic and colored animations, i dont like cartoonish style like WoW, but EQ2 has housing that LOTRO lacks , better player driven economy, more complex crafting system, more races and professions, PVE and PVP that LOTRO lacks as well. . What about the new skill system in LOTRO? They say it gives inumerous possibilities and u can equip and combine some called traits as u wish, looks like very interesting. Ah sound is one thing i have only heard good things about LOTRO, might be really good. What about mounts and transports, variety of weapons and armor, do u know which is best? Thats important too.

So looks like EQ2 is more polished and complete atm, LOTRO has potential but needs some work still. Dunno any of them actualy just impression from all i have seen. And like i said ill give EQ2 a try fore sure.

    Cheers!

LOTR is not even in the same league as EQ2.  Maybe in a year of 2 it will be worth the comparaison. EQ2 right now completly blows LOTR out of the water

    precisely.

everything the OP mentioned can be found in EQ2.  The same cant be said for LotRO.  If what you (the OP) really want is what you posted, the check out EQ2

EQ2 was developed at the same time as WoW.  EQ2 was released two months before WoW.  EQ2 is not a WoW clone in any shape or form. That's like eating a pizza and saying it tastes like blueberries.

About LoTRO.  I didn't like it.  Matter of fact I will agree with you about wow clone with this.  LoTrO is very similiar to WoW in certain aspects (but not all).

Why didn't I like it?  It felt like a hand-holding MMO. Meaning, it was terribly too simple.  VERY simple.  You got special titles for reaching various adventure lvls without ever dying.  Do you know how many peopl have these titles? Almost everyone.

Too easy, community isn't as congealed as EQ2.  LoTro felt a little "young" to me.  You can't swim underwater (I REALLY hated  that lol. In EQ2 you have quests devoted purely for underwater and in WoW you had the same; you could explore underwater). In LoTRO you just doggie paddled across the pond like a water mesquito.  The professions are very limiting in LoTRO as you have very simplified classes (like 3 to 4 per race) and the customizations isn't anything to scream about.  If you aren't a human male then you are a female male.

EQ2 has time.  It has fleshed out experiences.  It has about 3 adventure packs and three expansions with one coming out in three months.  The latest update patch, they added a whole freakin city and a lvl 1-20 zone.....in a Update Patch!....that's friggin unheard of for EQ. Here are also some other things to think about

    1.  EQ2 has 24 Professions.   2.  LoTRO has 7

    1.  EQ2 has 18 races and soon 19.   2. LoTRO has 4

    1.  EQ2 forums are accessible to non subscribers   2.  You need to subscribe to LoTRO to view the forums (pet peeve of mine)

    1.  EQ2 has over 5200 quests   2.  LoTRO has about 65% of that

    Thats just some things

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

    Very well put Enigma!

I've posted before of the same topic and after 4 weeks of Eq2 I still think I made the better choice. I played the Lotr beta and frankly the ONLY thing it has going for it is the story line. Which to me would make a game kinda boring because it becomes predictable after awhile. Heck I'd still rather play WoW over Lotr and I don't even like WoW that much. I enjoyed the novels and the movie of Lotr but the game for me was a huge let down.  So I instead after trying the trials subscribed to Eq2 and I'm happy I did. I'm by no means a SoE fan but in truth, there really isn't too much else worth playing that interests me.

If you want depth and unpredictable adventure go with Eq2. If you want very simple constant quest grinding with limited toons to choose from, go with Lotr. If you want something in the middle go with WoW.

If you like small and simple LOTRO.

If you like large and complex EQ2.

I belive you guys, looks like EQ2 is way more complete and complex than LOTRO atm.

    Thanks for the help.

Well the pvp thing ... its nice ..i like that also in castle sieges and so on...

Problem is you left with just 2 choices, neither is really pvp

As a long term veteran MMo player since UO..... lol I think even Ultima Online is still the best you seek, but i like graphics to be important to..

The best thing of Lord of the rings is you feel at home in the storyline..within Tolkiens world right at the start at level 1 and your intro movie quest. About races and classes choices...lol there is so many.... every race has at least 4-5 choices which sets him apart with a own background and looks.

EQ2 is still a nice good game. For a newbie to enter i hope you find a guild soon or you coudl feel a bit alone...

Looks you already decided have fun

Have no fear, Xru is here.

well i agree it does try fit you into the lotr world but lotro is actually very lacking in variety of classes and races.

The choices are actually quite limiting compared to other games espically EQ2.

However,EQ2 has had 2 years of development and lotro just came out so really its hard to say if lotro will have as much or even more content then eq2 when its 2 years old.

They both suck because they are both dummied down easy games. Play Ryzom until Spellborn releases.

I've played EQ2, for more than 8 months, I leveled my char to 70 and I TELL YOU, straight from my heart. EQ2 is NOWHERE NEAR the looks and feel of LotRO. Even in my first days of totaly "wow all nice and new and shiny" EQ2 never ever reached the level of "WOW" that LotRO does.

To keep myself from starting a rant. LotRO > EQ2, looks, feel, design, lore - simply superior. A smash in the face of Salvatore-adoring goofy, nerd-fantasy lovers. Its the rock-hard mother of all fantasy manifested in one game.

Oh yea, and, it's more fun than EQ2, because it's more believable, its not "two cities with 50 races all in one place and a series of zelda-like ice, fire, jungle, forest Islands around it"...

It is Tolkien, its cherishing what geographers, philologists and aunt mary have enjoyed for 60 years: Authenticity. My dad once said, "lets replace the old Testament with the Silmarillon, its more believable after all and doesn't have all the arabian logic in it" (Thats a quote Mr. Admin)
