it's MOSTLY outdoors, the "main story" quests are all "instanced" as well as a few group quests being in a instance. There are also a few dungeons instanced.
Basically everything that they would use to tell a story is instanced because you CAN NOT tell a story the way that a real story would unfold in a normal world. And don't argue you can, because you'd be a idiot =P. And you'd understand this after the first 2 instances in the human area, and the first ones in the other areas.
It also is hard to maintain a atmosphere of dread or mystery, when theres 40 people in the same tunnel.
And trust me...theres ALOT of people playing this game, it's near impossible to go anywhere without finding people doing something.
I personally find the LOTRO story amazingly dull considering what it's inpsired from. If I want a story I will read a bppl, or play a single player game. I play MMORPGs to create my own story and develop my own character, not to be lead through a scripted storyline that gives me choice over the final outcome. The reason that tunnel is filled with so many people is because everyone is following the same path, which means everyone is going to travel to the same places. If the game didn't have a defined path and allowed for the story to branch out you wouldn't have this problem. Oh and the reason why there are people almost everywhere is because the world is so small.
Different strokes for different folks. Making your own story in a mmo imho is about the same as sitting down and actually writing a story(which i have actually done, but just for my own pleasure). Nobody besides you will ever care about what "pb1295ns heroic adventure to slay dragons across the world!" but does that make it any less meaningful to you? It shouldn't, and that's why you like that type of game. But lotro besides offering a game to play with is also offering a story for everyone to experience. And that's what it is, some people will like it, some people won't.
Theres also the "open world concept". It was fine back in UO, but it would be a very rare occurrence to see such a model actually make it off of the ground these days. Quests are here to stay. Grinding mob camps in a world for hours is gone. 1000 hours of random pvp in the world won't suit most people.
and while the world may not be the largest one in the world, you can not write it off "the worlds so small your bound to see the same 50 people over and over"..... theres a TON of people playing this game, thats why the areas are crowded.
*edit* and i have to agree with the poster above me. samuraisword you are too full of yourself, and that's all i have to say on that. GL with your future game of choice. And i can't wait to see you defend it against the same claim your making now. fanboy at its finest.
I like it, and really enjoying it. If you play it 'hardcore' and are already at max lvl, then I can understand why you don't like it...The main issue is going to be can it provide enough content.
To be honest I can see myself picking up AOC or WAR, and moving LOTRO to something to come back to when the content is there to do...then going back.
I'll re-up my subscription once they figure out how to keep Vista players online for more than 20 minutes without crashing.
Not a big deal though, summer is always full of non-MMORPG games to play. Right now I'm playing a little WoW, but mostly Shadowrun, Halo 2, Company of Heroes (DX10 now, weee!), and I'm waiting for Quake Wars, Bioshock, and a few others.

Only the suckers who bought the lifetime membership will, because they now feel obligated to get their money's worth. That's what they will fool themselves into believing anyways. There is no value in playing a game which is boring and easy however. They will be wasting precious time as well as the money already lost.
I didnt buy lifetime sub , since i never managed to play MMO longer than 2 months withouth dropping out from boredom.
Right now i am renewing my sub to LOTRO , and actually starting to like it even more. And there are some great free expansions comming every 2 months...
And the game is not easy at all.
Lot of quests need 2 full groups working together to complete. And even than with lot of strategy.
And boring ? ... well , diferent tastes perhaps...

I knew I would get flamed. See? Somebody's trying to tell me that I'm not having fun.
FYI: I didn't spend for the lifetime. Didn't have the cash to cough up. I'm still gonna play it.
Have fun with that logic puzzle.
EDIT: Oh, and Samuraisword - you're about the worst advertisement for TCoS walking these forums. How about you learn to play nice, so that instead of driving potential players away from your chosen game, you might actually attract them. It's lucky I know you're not an average community member for TCoS, or I'd never take another look at it. As it is, it's one of my top 3 anticipated MMOs.
How about you let people who enjoy their game enjoy it without being a total jerk about it? What makes you think hes replying directly to you? he didnt even quote you! touchy eh!
I played it for 2 and half weeks, i did enjoy it and thought it was getting better with each level then i hit sort of a brick wall, didnt feel like i wanted to log on and couldnt be bothered playing, im not really a fan of LOTR so i think this had something to do with it. Decided to go back to WoW for now and get my mage to 70 and perhaps make an alt or two.
I join the group saying no I still stress it is an awesome world however I got bored out of playing in it and eventually returned to WoW. Occasionally I get back to it when servers are down but thats it. Probably when I reach again the point of needing some WoW disintoxication I would repay LotRO another visit unless something better is available by then such as AoC or WarHammer.
To wannabe or not to wannabe? Hey I know the answer and it is not 42!
That's so funny, because this game is still on 8.4 and heavily crowded on my server... Are all the players mute?
I would not even think of choosing a different game. It's far and away the one game that motivates me the most after one month of playing. It finally abandons goofy armor, gene-tech races, flying cities and stupidities like that.
That's maybe the most important point. It's a darn lot more of what I always wanted than any other game: REAL middle-ages. Plus billions of other facts, starting off with the music system, the coloring system, the landscapes, the storyline... Well, it's Lord of the Rings, I know Salvatore-adoring dark-elf freaks won't understand, but this is THE fantasy
nope.. i stopped just short of the end, it was far to low key.. no challenges.. nothing gripping other than maybe its LOTR... ive now switched to SWG and i know this will anger many but i think it is a fab mmo.. if you need a sci fi mmo, and you dont have issues with NGE etc, then try SWG if you have already played Anarchy, one thing though, SORT THE LAG OUT SOE!!!! so no, my LOTRO will stay in its box, under the stairs, for a long time
No. Fun game just doesn't have it for me all around. I got almost 2 toons to max and I just found it way to easy. End-game isn't there either. The monster play did remind me of a small version of RvR in DAoC, which was cool, but it just doesn't have enough polish on it and enough heroes....which will come in time...i know... i know. Bottom line for me LoTRO is a good game that just doesn't look like it is going to be great to me. It is fun, it just isn't the long term game I am looking for.
I didnt continue after the free month, Im back playing EVE for a while. (and I thought LOTRO was boring)
I dunno what wrong with me, LOTRO is a nice game its well put together and it looks really nice, I think I might have finaly grew up, mabye computer games arent for me anymore.
It is no doubt a great game, nice and more realistic then WOW but on the same line, with several welcomed inovations. However, no, I quit after the free month. I was tired of WOW mechanics and since this is also kill x things, gather y from here and there, I got bored.
Great base for a MMO but missing alot of small things like Shared Bank , UI mods , solo quests 35+ , More bank space , to many bland skills & usless deeds , Crappy Mail system , to Many Hunters allways 3 in every group i join & I can see why - They solo well & they can travel with ease , Repair bills suck espically on things in your packpack , No Tailored bags , 90% of crafted gear is worse than quested .. I could go on & on ..

It's just my opinion, not anywhere near a personal attack as you have suggested. You should enjoy your game and not get so defensive about other people's opinions, or you will live an unhappy life.
I am not average, I am above average, in intelligence anyways. There is no logic for personal taste so no puzzle to be solved.
I am not being paid to recruit people for TCoS so I could care less wether you choose to play it based on my personal opinions about other games. If you make illogical choices like that, then I suggest not trying TCoS as I would prefer not seeing you there.

Hehe. Touchy much? I said an *average community member of TCoS*, implying that if you were a fair representation of that game's following (which you aren't -- they're much friendlier than you, as I frequently lurk on their forums) then I wouldn't want to play the game.
You respond with a defense about your intelligence. Reading comprehension FTL.
The word 'suckers' is an attack. Perhaps not directed at me in particular, but at those enjoying the game. Your 'opinion' as you so quaintly try to put it now, was worded in a hostile, condescending and unfriendly manner that I didn't appreciate. All I was trying to say is that if you can manage to word your 'opinions' in a non-hostile way that puts other people down just so you can feel "cooler" than them because you're more "hardcore", you'll find that people like you better. Doesn't matter if you're paid or not - if TCoS really is your chosen game, then you'll want it to succeed, right? To be around for you to play? Can't do that if there are no players.
Oh, and I will be playing TCoS.

Definitely going to keep playing. The comparisons to WoW still baffle me but I guess people compare different things between games than I do. WoW at its core still seems like a rush to max level so you can raid and get gear deal. LoTRo is not that type of game. But each to their own.

that can compare right now.
I was doing the quests in Dol Dinen yesterday and I was impressed on how much of a challenge it was for
a full group fo 6. Dol Dinen isn't an instance, but it should be. When I hear people say that LOTRO isn't a
challenge, I wonder what level they were when they quit or if they have done any of the instances.
LOTRO can be VERY BORING at times, but there are plenty of areas and quest lines that require a good
group that is working together. The new music system that will be released this month is great as well
as the new area - Evendim.
Sadly No..
While I enjoyed LOTRO I didn't enough to pay the subscription fee.
I found it a bit too linear and lacking enough depth for my taste. Still as WOW before it's well made and does an exemplary job of MMO lite.
