Best: Ryzom, for sure for SURE!

Worst: SO SO SO many bad ones. WoW isn't that bad when you find people, but the chat is always filled with kids talking bout football or something stupid. All communities are bad compared to Ryzom. I have played 50 plus mmo's and it's hit or miss heeh

Ryzom sounds interesting ~ Is it a free to play or subscription wise MMORPG? Any particular server that I can play from Singapore?

Best - Ryzom -  the one and only :) And hey...we still there no matter what ;)

Worst- IMHO WoW but I know there are good folks out there too :)

Worst  WOW (although it never used to be ) and best  ? well for me its a toss up between EQ II and Lotro

  • bonobotheorybonobotheory Member UncommonPosts: 1,007

Worst: World of Warcraft, for the reasons already given by a dozen other people in this thread.

Best: Everquest II. People are helpful and generous to a fault.  Ask a simple newbie question, and half a dozen people will race to be the first to answer, and at least one of them will show up to give you some gold and equipment.

    Best: FFXI

    Worse: WoW by far.

  • AnofalyeAnofalye Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 7,433

Worst: Any official forum.  There, on these nasty forums, dwell fanbois which only purpose is to blind the devs into lameness and ruins game.

Best: Usually in-game, if the players are happy...such as SoR or Pre-nerfs CoX.

One of the first graphical online game UO had one of the best communities early on in the game during what I'll call any game's "discovery stage" which is when its fresh, new and everyone is a "noobie". 3 to 6 months after that, things will change as with every other community would. You'd have your digital divide of the "haves" and "have nots", your mature players vs the kids and your goof-offs vs the jackass-griefers.

EQ for example. When it first released, it was one of the first truly beautiful lookng onlne game *at the time*.  Nothing much could compare to it  visually as a game or has as much "exploritory" content before. You needed a community to survive. I remembered the first few weeks of pioneer chat as we talk about zones, discovery and such in general chat.

Compare that experience to one 6 months later, and its a different kettle of fish.

So I personally think that the life cycle and the character of any MMO would look like this :

New in the market : Usually this is beta, so everyone's here to try the game out, usually great community with general sharing and friendly chat

Discovery stage : Community gravitates towards helping each other to survive, discover the world they are in, as everyone in the game are noobs

influx stage : Game gets critical mass and more and more new players sign up, the community now becomes vulcanised bettween the haves and have nots .

mature stage : Your regular WoW chat.  Basically, there is no filter that would prevent jack-asses or morons from signing up and playing the game. You'd have the good and the bad. Depending on the ratio of  true game players vs jack-asses ...your experience the community will differ.

End of cycle stage: The game is now old news. Only the hardcore, the dedicated or the ones who really love the game world are now still playing. More often then not, the community reverts back to being one that welcomes and actually be of "use" to any new player to the game.

That's more or less my take on the "online game community" cycle, and I think you'll find it to be true to most MMOs.

Great post, I agree with you.

Worst: Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, FlyFF (do these people even speak English?  looks like 6 year olds typing at a keyboard most of the time.)

Best: Neocron 1, Planetside, Auto Assault, FFXI (the game where I could whisper "Meow." to Mithras and they respond back.. then a conversation starts!)

    Best - Wow.

Worst - tie between EvE and EQ II, with VG very close....

  • PrebThorPrebThor Member UncommonPosts: 452

Worst? Best? I refuse to believe that there are games out there with a**hole-free "communities". I'm having a great time in World of Warcraft at the moment despite the retardedness and the same goes for Guild Wars. Both games can (and most likely will) bring out the worst in every one, but the few cool players you actually get to know compensate for it. The whole immature phenomenon is interesting...

Worst - DAoC as it stands now, and any free MMO. Constant bickering, and no one will even respond to you

Best - I wouldn't know. WoW seems to be the only game with a community. The rest are a bunch of ignorant teenagers playing free games, or the MMO is just too small to sustain any type of community.

I'm surprised people are saying WoW. I always get help, and then some. You do have to weed out the morons, but every game has 'em. At least you see people in WoW unlike these other deserted wastelands.

World of Warcraft is my vote for the worst community.

As for the best, at least when I played, I would vote for Ultima Online, never ran across anyone that didn't take the time to reply to a question or lend a hand when it was needed.

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

To the people saying Ryzom is best, that community has changed a lot, they lost a lot of people and also there are a lot of people with a grief to eachother in that game, maybe if ur a newb u wont notice it but people can act like a bitch in that game, once it was the best community maybe but those days are long go.... thank the devs and half finished content (*cough outposts *cough*) for that.

Best = WoW.  Criticized here because it's so popular, wrongly claimed to be the exclusive haunt of kids.  Not my experience, especially on RP realms.  WoW has more adult players than most other MMOs combined (simply due to sheer numbers), but yes, a few asshats too (probably on the newer PvP realms).

Close 2nd.  EVE =  Has a greater proportion of asshats than WoW, yet this is balanced with a wonderfully intelligent and helpful non-pirate community.

Worst =  EQ2.  Honestly, some of the players have severe attitude problems.  The pretentious, self-righteous, can't-see-the-wood-for-the-trees, pseudo-intellectual kind that inhabits this community is the very worst kind of troll  God help SOE with that lot.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

Best - Lineage 2, www.l2blah.com - our community. to an outsider it probably looks like a whole lot of flaming and hate; but thats really just a mask, most of us have been playing for years together and have no real hate toward one another. Plus, what other game has forums which can change outcomes of in-game wars, politics overall. (Maybe not really, but it definitely has some effect.)

Worst - I'm going to say, WoW. The sheer amount of people make it hard to have a close knit overall community when you have that many people playing. But I guess thats what clans are for; and there are some pretty good clans. So... Who knows. Probably every game has close knit clans.

There is no right or wrong answer to this.

Create a forum topic with game (X) has the best community ever!! And whichever game you put in there will not really matter, you will get flamed to hell and back anyway.

Every game has a bad community, and also a good one, it all depends on your personal experience, your social skills and who you find to play with. One person may have an outstanding experience and another be horrified, all based on who you talk to and what time you log on.
