Well I played EVE for a really solid month or two, and really enjoyed the game. I loved its complexity, the community was fantastic, and I had a good time playing.
However, it got to a point (fairly quickly) where I felt like all I was doing was running rat missions or mining for ISK to get a better mining barge to get more ISK to get a beefier ship ......... for what?
Never really saw what there was to do after that ....
Any ideas on why I got bored?

Did you get involved with the player community (try a corporation etc)?
I know that playing any game on my own can get boring fast for me, and "pirate packs" etc add to the game play options (although you might want to read up on that kind of thing first on the EVE boards).
No, never got into a corp
Even then, whats there to be done?

Umm welcome to MMOGs? The point is to PvP. You get a better ship so you can kill the ships of other players. The point is to dominate the EVE universe. You need isk to do that, and you need to join a corporation because good luck doing it alone.
EVE is all about corporation/alliance PvP.

A friend of mine had gotten bored of EVE recently..
Now a new alliance formed for him with a few other corps....
This week he's played 16hours daily, building the strength of the alliance up.
What is it good for? The PvP that will come.
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.
Interestingly enough "getting a beefier ship" quite simply isnt all that necessary in EVE-at least not in the traditional MMO sense.
People come to EVE and see "Battleship" and figure all roads lead to moving directly toward battleship as soon as possible. Gotta upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. This is patently untrue in EVE. Many players get off the upgrade ship treadmill and chose a class of ships they enjoy and just go deeper and deeper into that particular skill set.
For example there are interceptor pilots in my alliance that pretty much fly 100% intys, cov ops etc. Theyve focused nearly all of thier skill points on small guns, navigation skills, targeting skills, etc. etc. All designed to make them the best inty pilots in EVE.
We have some traders that can barely undock a ship yet they have 7 million trading skill points.
We have some combat pilots that focus 100% on recons, or 100% on battleships etc etc. There is no doubt as you stay in the game longer and get more and more skillpoints that the option to fly more ships presents itself. But to start EVE and immediately place your self on a treadmill toward bigger bigger bigger ships is the best way to wind up hating the game.
Get to destroyers, or cruisers, or battlecruiers and then stop. Look at your skills that you use to fly those ships and go deeper and deeper into them. Focus on the guns, navigation, drones, armor repping etc. You can run level 3 missions in a well fitted cruiser. Level 3's with ease in a battlecruiser. You can be an effective PVP pilot in virutally anything once you learn your role.
There is no compelling reason to grind isk just to get bigger ships. There is a compelling reason to grind isk for modules/gear etc..being rich in EVE has its benefits.
Also i would suggest going to the eve-online.com forums and viewing all the forums. There are so many careers you can have in eve. All these careers of course are self defined and you can mix and match them.
Quickly they are : traditional miner, moon miner, tech2 components trader, trader, builder, inventor, pirate, anti pirate, foot solider in a major alliance, fleet commander in a major alliance, mission runner, roleplayer, explorer/complex runner, there are of course a million sub categories and probably many ive just overlooked.
in pvp you can be a tackler, an electronics warfare specialist, a scout using cov ops, a recon pilot, a prober, a heavy battleship pilot, a supporting gun ship pilot, and many other roles. You can use your pvp skills to build a region as an alliance member, to fight major alliance battles, or to pirate and stalk innocents. There is no end to the paths.
Sorry you burned out a bit...consider your time in EVE, try and throw out the traditional MMO treadmill mentality, identify the parts of EVE you enjoyed and then come back!
oh...and do get in a corp/alliance. Spend time in the recruitment channel and on the recruitment forums. There are many many options available.

To add in on the pvp there's also Titan pilots.
Madmen who paint a bigass bullseye on their forehead,
but then also wield the biggest weapon seen in any MMO..

I found the game to be very boring before I joined a corp, after that things got alot more interesting.
Especially when you join an Alliance, you work together towards a common goal and get into all sorts of political and combat situations.
eve is a pvp game and you don't pvp for numbers or titles or ranks. you do it for fun. Ratting, running missions, those things are there just to support pvp.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it.
Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro
if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end
After all, if you can't replace your ship. Is not recommended to go and PvP. Corps and Alliances will help you out on that end, but you need to spend a little time either ratting, mining, trading, pirating, etc... to achieve this.
This is a really good response to this post, and exactly what I've (personally) been doing for the last couple of months. The depth of which you can approach the various ship types, skills, and fittings is an entire game unto itself.
For example it will probably take me another month or so of training to get to fly a Battleship. I could certainly go that direction, but I really want to train up my industry and mining skills so I can fly the next level of mining ship. So there is a tradeoff and decisions to be made. What this means is I'm stuck in a BattleCruiser class ship, flying in 0.0 space (where my corp is located), and trying to be effective. Through experience I've found that there is no limit to what you can do to be effective in this situation, if you are willing to play a mmorpg for what it is, a social game to play with other people.
For instance I can fit up for damage assistance, or remote repairing (did someone say 'healer'), or a webber, or capacity drainer/supplier, or salvager, or loot runner, or any other of a number of different support roles. This is of course if you go out hunting, or ratting with a partner.
As far as going solo with a BattleCruiser in 0.0 space, no I can't bring down a rat worth 900,000 isk - but I can bring down one worth 300,000 isk, and only after a month of tweaking, studying what was available for the BattleCruiser, was I able to do this. When I first tried I'd have to run away immediately. But after researching all of the different mods, fittings, and skills that were possible; you can refine even the most modest of ships into effective vessels for their particular situation.
Of course you have to enjoy this kind of stuff, and you have to be patient, and you have to just not want everything right away. If you get the biggest ships rights away - yawn.....(and also with the skill system the way it is it would take you awhile to properly equip them).
Again - great post Vantras - there is an incredible amount of gameplay into just going deeper, and deeper into what's already available to you. And while you're doing that - you're earning isk for the next level of ship or skill or whatever, which provides a whole other realm of depth, when you reach that point...
Yes, I've been focusing on frigate skills myself. I plan on flying a stealth bomber which will be great fun and very useful to my alliance. In the end, if you're into PvE then EVE is simply not the game for you. The action is in PvP, especially alliance PvP.
And yeh, you don't PvP to get "honour points" that mean nothing, you PvP to steal people's ships or get bounties or even take over starsystems for your alliance. It's good stuff.

well ya got bored cause ya played eve like it was wow or eq2 or any of a number of scripted games ...and eve is anything but scripted .
I have lots of accounts but I play 3 full time one is specializing in command ships & heavy assault ships another is a industrial char who will eventually fly carriers ..my 3rd is a pvp type who is going down the recon/stealth path ..
they all have some crossover skills so I can do mining ops in 00 with them but other wise they are generally in different parts of eve space .....
I will also be getting into invention (industrial char )
exploration ( command ship char )
as for the pvp char will just become the best pilot I can be with mad gunnery skills & ship support skills...
hmm
Any MMORPG has this phenomena.... you play to gain money to buy items or you play to gain xp to gain levels.... in the end they all have similar aspects. In more 'traditional' MMORPG's your 'ultimate goals' are laid out for you though "reach level 70" or "be able to go to this zone".... in EVE it's not like that .... the 'endgame' is whatever you want it to be. There is no 'path' to follow. The game is a 'sandbox' and the 'endgame' is whatever YOU desire.... if you want to be a great manufacturer then you work towards that.... it helps to decide what your short, mid and long range goals will be.
It's kind of hard to describe except to say: If you never get involved in the social aspect of EVE you're missing 75% of the game content. It's certainly possible to just play the game for "the next ship" or "the next BPO" or "to control the market". But most people get bored with that fairly quickly. Some find much more enjoyment in setting up a killboard and racking up impressive PVP numbers. Others enjoy joining corporations to PVP alongside others. Some enjoy forming a corporation of their own and trying to nurture it so that one day it can be a power in the community... still others like to do logistics and develop a name/reputation for themselves.... but all of these things require you to interact with the community. EVE will allow you to solo if that's what you want to do. But it's not designed for it so the 'solo' game can be very dry.

PvP is not just shooting someone in EvE. It's also anything that puts one player up against another, and that also means selling items to other people, or making contracts, etc. This is according to what some of the CCP dev's think about player interaction. Playing the market in EvE is a game into itself. If you enjoyed manipulating the player economy in other games, you would also do so in EvE. The nice thing about trading in EvE is that to be an effective trader doesn't require the best in trading skills. It's mainly what you do as a trader that makes the difference. Therefore, you can combine other 'professions' in EvE with a trader and still be good at making lots of money.
Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.
Ok first of all the best bit of EvE can be found in corps, it is afterall a multiplayer oriented game. Now in a corp you will ahve buddies helping with the mining and the missions and soon you will find yourseld easilly earning in one day what you are currently earning in a week. Also you will be working as part of a team building up the corp etc. Also another option is to join a PvP corp of some sort now this i can tell you is fun get good in a cruiser and you and find a good way of earing income and soon those pirates or miners ill learn to fear your name in local
Also its very important to note that 2 Months is not enough for someone to get really good at any one thing especially if you ahvent learnt any learning skills. Eve is a game of long term goals but if you join a good corp and plan your skill learning in the right direction you will soon be out there having a whale of a time.
Also the biggest ship is not always the best one for example a cruiser and a frigate can kill a tier 3 battleship such as [for the sake of example] a Hyperion battleship. With just 2 ships not worth mor than 10 million including equiptment and ammo you can take down a 140 million ship NOT including equiptment. Its all down to the following 3 things. Knoledge Planning and Exacution.
Im sure given time and with a corp you will find eve getting even more fun remember the secret of easy living in eve is having friends helping you
This is just my opinion but playing eve on line without joining a corporation in a decent alliance is like trying to play WoW by never leaving Ironforge.
Others may say differently but Eve online has, at its core, pvp conflict as a game play dynamic. Most other systems exist to keep the war machines fueled.
You've got Dev's playing and helping there corps in Wars. Then not doing anything really about it except say we did not know this was going on.

Elsabolts i'm reading your trolls all over these forums. Take what this guy has to say with a grain of salt.
If you want to play eve you need to get educated about the game, its a different beast than most. Casual, shoot from the hip types say the devs cheat all the time. This just isnt the case.
Played it for 3 yrs i guess my opion is as good as anyone else's
MAGA
BTW i played EQ2 for 2 years and WoW for 2 too. And ive played eve for 4 and liniage 2 for 2 years too. All at the same time BTW
Of course you are entitled to your opinion but I'm entitled to tell you its misinformed.
Since we're on a forum where impressions are everything and I have some strange affinity to games that makes me want to express myself on them I'm allowed to say that in my opniion you're opinion is wrong.
If you're up to speed on Eve online you'll know that people that like this game get defensive when comments like that are made.
Was a member and stll am if i were to come back in the Corp Old Farts, Per admission from CCP that yes one of there dev's was involved with the Corp BOB and had help them with tech and adv missiles. CCP made a long statement after investaging that did nothing to anyone.
MAGA
But the real point is...the net effect on the average player is zero.... nada.... and in no way should convince someone to not give EVE a fair trial. (or return for that matter)
I just joined corporation (AWECO) that was utterly destroyed back in April / May by BOB forces, wiped right out of 0.0 space.... and you know what they blame it on? Not on developer/BOB cheating, not on BOB tech but one simple factor, our corporation had not trained up enough folks in capital ships to hold off the onslaught that they faced. (well, and the coalition they were part of chose not to assist)
They've now re-established themselves in a new area of 0.0, formed new alliances with anti-BOB forces and are rebuilding furiously to once again play a part in the epic wars that are on-going in EVE all the time. I hope to join them there shortly once my skills are high enough to sustain myself financially in 0.0 space.
