ok, i think i had my fill of WoW, and im just sick of it. i was really looking into a new MMO to play and im thinkiing about buying the CoH and CoV bundle pack (two games for the price of one, thats already better than Blizz).

So can i get some advice on if i should spend my money on this game, i would like to hear from players who have played both WoW and the CoV, CoH games

Thank You!

I have played both, and CoH's pvp crap compared to WoW although the people are nice, for me i would probobly just use that game as a chatting game. combat sucks, but the choice of heroes you can have are aplentiful, another thing i like is that err i cant remember what level but you can choose from, Flight, Super jump (personaly my favorite),and speed (second fav) then some other ones people dont care too much for xD.If i could rate this game i would deffinately rate it a 7.5 because of the lack of good pvp.

I hope this helped, infact im not even sure if it answerd what you were saying.... i just skim read it -.- but i dont feel like editing my post so whatever....

Although the "endgame" is more optional then in any other game...

You can progress in endgame either by grouping (STF/RSF especially, but any SF/TF), by raiding...or by purchasing at the Market.

You will have a LOT more customisation, both in look (up to  5 costumes) and in powers (16-49 possible combos for primary/secondary in each of the 10 AT, not counting secondary power pools, epic power pool and the way you enhance your power, which set bonuses you get and so on...)

Better travelling between mission, no more slow griffon ride or whatever silly designed to be time-consuming...yet no instant teleport either, so you actually travel there (use metro between zones).

  • I have played both.  I cancelled WoW wehn my druid hit max AV rep and never looked back, I cancelled CoX and resubbed :P.

Let me tell you the unvarnished truth.  And by that I am going to say things that any MMO player who is honest with themselves already knows.  There is a lot of repetition.  Both WoW and CoX and every other MMORPG.

OK I hope there is no real argument here, but there is an important distinction.  The repetition in WoW is disguised but hightly invariant, the repetition in CoX but not disguised at all but somewhat variant.

In WoW you do one of two things in PvE.  Quest or run an instance.  The instances are static, completely unchanging, but each instance is slightly different.

In CoX, every single mission in an instance is different, but highly similar.   As humans we naturally recognize such an obvious pattern

Most new players either accept this or say "This game is so repetitive" and quit.  The trick though is that WoW is really no better.  You always just tank and spank.

In fact even though the repetition is more obvious I am going to give you a few reasons why CoX is better:

    1) only game that does not require tank and spank.  An 8 defender team is completely sick.  Some defenders have no heals and at all.  My storm defender can tank liek crazy (except for one key intentional weakness; mez protection)

    2) Tons and Tons of class variation, with some interesting mechanics.

    3) Really just tons of good archvillians many of which are quite interesting.  For the most part in WoW only the boss fights are of importance and everything else is trash.  Therefore is this case CoX and WoW are equivalent  since the "well crafted" natiure of most instances are considered "trash" anyway.

    4) The random nature of missions means things like scouting are actually useful and that thigns like pulling are non-static.  In CoX you never quite know what you will get.

    5) supergroups have more functionality.

    6) the new I9 invention system gives loot and crafting with less loot whoring (ie. not on specific bosses, no rolling, and power enhancement based).

So the really big thing is that in CoX all you do, for the most part is run missions or street sweep.  This seems repetitive and it is, but its really just a mental trick.  WoW simply mnaskes its repetition.  Otherwise CoX is really a somewhat better game.  If you can get past this you will like it a lot.  If you really need the repetition masked then you will eventually tire of the game.

To be honest, City of Heroes/Villains is my favorite MMO to date, mainly of because of how smoothly it 'goes down'.

You don't have to attribute 4 hour sessions to it to complete a raid, you don't have to obsess over getting that Epic item in order to be competitive, and you don't have to worry about finding the usual mix of members for a group (as in tank, healer, DPS, etc.) because in CoX, you can take the most random group of heroes and work them into a killing machine.

CoX has always felt to me like it was almost an old-fashioned arcade game that was really souped up and made Online. Sure, it's not the deepest gameplay in the world but that's what I like because I don't have to devote my life to it. It's just simple fun with friends when you have the time, rather than tedious mind-numbing raiding every night in order to get that uber dagger or whatever.

I played CoH before WoW and am now back playing CoH after my mage hit 70 in WoW.  To me, WoW is all about the endgame gear.  CoH is all about getting to the end, then trying something new.  Alt-o-holism is, to me, a necessary evil to really enjoy CoH.  CoH is more time friendly, in that you can log in, play a quick bit, get some missions done, then log out.  I never really felt that way about WoW.  Also, you get travel powers realy early in CoH compared to WoW.  I don't PvP, so I can't comment on what WoW is compared to CoH.

I have, and probally will be a never hard core gamer. I've played numeroes mmos for a fraction of a time. And coh was proballly the second longest, with wow coming in the first. I did enjoy wow a whole lot. But as the years went on personal life intruded and i found i couldnt keep up with the gear i needed to make a difference in the game. Now I'm plannin on returning to coh this friday. I know ill pick it up for a few weeks maybe a month or two, maybe even a year. And play it. You cannot really use repetivness against it. AS I have yet to play a game whos quest isnt repetive. But the game is very easy to pick up on, and you really do not get that pang of regret if you want to quit it. Leveling gets difficult and a little tedious as you level up. Sooner or later itll seem like itll take forever to just level once, but you wont get this until your mid twenties( highest cap is 50 or 60.) Try not to day or youll acculmilate dept. If you do manage to score a large amount of dept, i recommended grinding until your rid of it or it will be a show stopper. One reason i quit was because my favorite blaster and highest hero acumilated two rings of dept i coulndt seem toget rid of. At ten through 15 you get your travel powers, which i beleive are the greatest way to travel. Now, going to quests takes mere seconds. Most  archytpes can solo a quest, although difficulty varies, and now the level of quests can be raised or lowered i believ. I tried pvp once, and its alright,  I mean its not WoW  but its decent. The graphics are very superhero/comic bookish. With bright colors and spectacular power effects, and soon the common sounds of beepin and powers going off will be all too familiar.I would recommended givin this game a try. And while your picking up the gams buy a time card so that way you don't have to worryy about credit card fees if you dont like the game.

I played WoW and got bored with the setting, solid game though. As a huge comic book fan, we are remiss in forgetting that CoX setting is unique. The Super Hero setting is awesome! Out of all the MMORPGs out there, I find CoX to have the most friendly and helpful community. To the OP, I hope you enjoy your time in CoX!

I left WoW a month ago for CoX, after playing WoW for 2 years, and will not be looking back.

Do you feel that the CoX community is much better than WoW's as well?

  • bartwartbartwart Member Posts: 15

From a PUG point of view, PUGs are a lot more fun in CoX than in WOW.  Nobody cares what class you are, and it doesn't matter anyway because most any combination of characters can do any mission.  Besides, all of the missions can be soloed anyway.  I also like that you don't have to roll for loot or get quest items.

By extension, the community is much nicer.  Nobody is uptight about the group dynamics.

first off the long post that i wont quote was dead on............and every other positive comment about this game that has been made so far i agree with, very easy to pick up and play for 30 mins, group with 7 random people without a tank and still spank as was said.........never a fan of "quests" but the uniqueness of the comic book world makes the "missions" and street sweeps much more enjoyable.

KEY ADVICE:  pick a superhero design you would really want to be in real life and you'll have fun, make a character you think sounds cool on paper and get ready for a typical mmo grind that they all are, its what you make of it brothas and sistas

Regarding the repitiotion that both WoW and CoX have:

Yes, they both have it, quite  a bit, so do all other MMOs, but that was already adressed. My favorite thing about CoX is that almost all of it is fun. Yes, fun. In an MMO. And it seems to last longer than WoW. I quit WoW for it, then came back at my friend's urging. Now, some have quit, or don't even play on my servers, and, in one case, are banned. I am re-DLing the client right now, and am looking forward to it.

CoX keeps things constantly fresh, or at least it seems like it. The fact that there is no one way to do anything, really, is awesome.
