star wars galaxies but some crafters are now made useless by uber loot.. theres also Roma Victor, probably better then SWG if you like realisim
Only Weaponsmith has trouble competing with loot. All the other professions make superior items to loot and infact use loot items to further improve their quality.

Does that make the fact less valid? No. Weapon smiths are hosed atm.

I like crafting, a lot more than raiding or killing stuff. So I know where your coming from. SWG was good at release, I'm not sure what it's like now but for me it was the best. EQ2 is fun and you feel like you actually making stuff though the market for made items isn't great. Eve has a vast crafting system though for me it felt a bit to distant from what I was doing. Sort of like my factories made stuff whilst I continued to "level up" (so to speak). WoW has a crafting system if you like to make stuff whilst your waiting for the raid to start. Beyond that its rather poor, though I liked the fishing element. Of course one you wont see mentioned by many is A tale in the Desert. This is do to it being a totally crafting/social game. NO killing involved. I like to kill the odd thing so I found it to be to limited. But for pure crafting it's worth a look.
So it really depends on how hardcore crafter you are. There are certainly other games that have crafting systems but none really stick in my mind as worth mentioning. Though before somebody flames me, I've not played all games. And I look forward to maybe learning there is a game with a crafting system that was as enjoyable as SWG used to be before they screwed the game over.
eq2 sucks compared to SWG or Roma Victor, why? because its a loot driven game; any player can just do a quest or kill a named mob
I'd still said eq2, simply because it is fun to craft in, and at the same time, the rest of the game is still fun. SWG maybe that's a possibility for you, i don't know the current incarnation of crafting in swg... but roma victor is a game that released pre alpha and is just now entering alpha release

The SWG crafting system remains mostly unchanged since the release of the game. They way you go about making stuff is still the same, just the effects of the final products are different in some cases, mostly Weaponsmith and Chef.
As for weaponsmith, yes it's a valid complaint that there's not much point to it at the moment, I was a WS pre-nge afterall However, it is only one crafting profession of 8. The Devs have also announced that WS is being worked on to make it as valid as the other professions.
I would say SWG, EQ2 and Ryzom all have good crafting systems in place. EVE's is nice, I don't really consider it to be "crafting" but more of mining and " mass manufacturing", but its player run market can't be beat. Another game I heard that has a good crafting system is A Tale in the Desert.
"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"
trying all of these suggestions tried ryzom its pretty decent swg couldnt really try much because i cant use a harvester tool during trial >.> UO i played back in the day last time i tried going back to it community was so small felt like i was playing alone. Right now i am installing the EQ2 trial will be trying that now
It is still in the niche catergory. While it is written in Java it is fully fuctional, deformable, alterable, hundreds of skills. The animation is lacking still. Still free to try and have a look at.
Look up Tedrick on the wild server and I can show you how to get along a bit.
I used to like Horizons too in that you could use your crafting skills to directly or indirectly aid in the construction of things that everyone could use, like crafting facilities, bridges, etc. Also you could build various things for yourself or your guild. That game is a bit dated now so I don't know how many people are there right now.
SWG may have had its share of problems, but out of the mainstream choices, it is by far the most fleshed out and complete crafting/business experience. You can make spaceships, buildings, robots, clothes, armor, weapons, jewelry, animals...the list is practically endless. Especially for the newly re-introduced beast mastery class, crafting is very deep.
EVE does have a good crafting system, but it lacks the feel of SWG's business/vendor/shop development tools.
In many ways, if you chose to do so, SWG can be like a business/storefront simulation. There is something really satisfying about building a successful business. On the front-end you have an actual storefront, customers, advertising, etc. On the back-end, there is a very deep crafting system, automated factories and harvesters and plenty of deals that can be made for resources, etc.
By far my best online gaming experience ever was building a top notch armorsmith business in SWG. Nothing else even comes close.
Unfortunately, like in real life, to be the best, you have to put in a lot of time and effort. People are willing to go to extreme lengths in MMORPG's, so if you don't do the same, it's harder to compete. As a result, people burn out from the effort.
i did not expect this many replys when i made this topic nice to see other people are also still into crafting.
i'm currently trying to tryout all of these games i was disappointed by the swg trial because they let me off the space station but then i couldn't activate the harvester they gave me because i was on a trial account >.>
eq2 i quite enjoyed the process you go through when you are crafting an item along with the playability of the combat side of the game.
eve i have not gotten around to trying yet so no opinion there as of now.
ryzom is decent but i think i am gonna cross that one off my list for now.
right now i am in the middle of getting the supplies to build a house in Wurm with thanks going to tedrick who helped me with the basics of the game because it can be confusing without anyone to kind of guide you.
UO i played awhile ago not interested in it anymore, If i have overlooked anything please tell me i want to make sure i give everything a chance before i make my final choice.
I'm going to have to lean toward A Tale in the Desert. I haven't played all games. I have played alot though.
I don't know any other games that you make your own bricks in a kiln by maintaining the temperature. Using water to cool and wood to heat. Using sand to make glass in a brazier while maintaining the correct temperature based on the type of glass you need. With the glass, you can make greenhouses. In the greenhouses you can, of course, grow grass. But, you can also expirement with seeds of different sorts to create your own hybrids. For instance, you can create a flax seed that requires less water during the growing process. And even name the outcome and sell them. You can also cross breed beetles that you find in the wild and put your bugs on display to be voted on for best design. You can capture and slaughter sheep and camels for cooking. I won't even get into how deep the cooking is. I played that game for a long time in the first version and I still can't grasp the cooking. You can make beer, even.
Everything in the game is built by the players. Except, if I recall correctly, the schools. You start off with nothing except a robe. You find shale to make a knife. Use the knife to harvest wood. Use the wood to make a loom. Get 5 starter flax seeds from the school and grow them. Using the loom to make cloth. Use wood to make boards. Make more flax into rope. Now use the cloth, boards and rope to make your first home, a tent. Dry grass in the sun to make hay. Use the hay to feed your camels to keep them alive until you need them for milk or meat in cooking. Laws are written by the players. For instance, back when I played, when someone quit, their camp stayed in the location indefinately. Players got a petition together that limited the time a camp would remain in the game after a player had quit. Players voted on the law. The law passed and the devs coded it into the game.
In my opinion, A Tale in the Desert is well worth a try. Alot of other games have good crafting mechanics. As far as realism, this game is unmatched. Again, my opinion.

Ryzom has a very good crafting system

Priston Tale - Rose Online - Knight Online - The Saga of Ryzom - EVE Online and a dozen of others

Strictly Crafting - Wurm Online
Crafting with other good gameplay - Ryzom, EVE, UO.
Horizon has little better crafting, because the crafting actually have reason to be there.
Everquest 2 has also nice crafting, They actually made crafting to more complex as been subgame it self, but the harvesting part is still very simple.
Saga of Ryzom has also nice crafting. Have even some comlex in harvesting part.
Never played SWG, so can't tell about it. I haven't seen good crafting system yet, they all are just too simple for me.
MMORPG.COM has worst forum editor ever exists
