Metal only speaks to a narrow audience. Orchestral scores are universal, even if not preferred by some. Of course, there's the obvious point: you can play any music you like on your computer.
Orchestral music is overrated
Why can't we have some Heavy Industrial, death metal running in the background?
There is a way to put your own music off your computer into FFXI, fyi. I did it when I was playing, just takes a little changing of music files.
But back on topic, I dont mind the orchestral music mainly because I know there isn't much out there that I would want in its place. I mean do you really think you could listen to the same Slayer song(s) or what-not for the remander of the game? I don't even think I could listen to the a bunch of songs from the same genre of metal for a whole game. Don't get me wrong the I like Rock and Metal but im very picky on those and dont like to listen to um when I dont want to.
To all those, I bid fairwell...
--- "I'm really sick of elves, dwarves, and orcs. They can all climb into a pinto and back into a wall for all I care."
Well personally if a mmorpg had "Heavy Industrial, death metal" music in the background i wouldn't play it. However maybe a mmorpg could have several different background music types and allow the user to select what they prefer.

The audio developers for games almost NEVER use death metal. The only reason is because it's fast paced, and get's your attention. That's pretty good, right? Wrong, try walking into that same area 50 times with the same music queing each time . Orchestra music may suck to listen to on it's own, but when you need music just for a relaxing background enviroment, that's the way to go. Orchestra music is noticable enough to know it's there, but not too much so if you enter an area 50 times it won't get annoying.
Playing: City of Heroes/ Dark Age of Camelot Upcoming: EverQuest II
Orchestral music for years has been one of the best mediums for painting a mental picture, or a mood. Basically, orchestral music is the obvious choice for a game that would want a more immersive world.
I listen to death metal and the likes once and awhile, but you have to realize, orchestral music is much more complex, universal, and eloquent in means of background music.
You can always use a "/music off" command, or something of the likes, and play your own music. Or, as stated above, you can change the music files (this works with most MMORPGs).

First of all, I will say this much. For me, I have tendancy not to play a game at all if the music isn't my taste
I have zero tolerance for bad music, in movie, in game likewise.
Sometimes I deliberately choose silent game (a game with no music)
Its boring lol Audio specialist for games like challanged. Rock was orinally a style of music that was only played by beginners.
Rock is simple, as is metal, and all those such things. I agree there are some good songs, I like metal and rock lol. but in games they are trying to get emotion across and create an ambience.
I could see if it was in a futuristic mmorpg, but even then, you would most likely find an orchestral backing to the song (see anime, and metal/rock used in games)
Also we all know that Rock and especially Metal.. and extreemly with Thrashing, or death metal. They arent as popular as orchestral. there are very few people who dont enjoy orchestral music, there are some who are young and are very "its not cool, I dont like it"
For those who played Lineage II, and heard the intro music, you know what im talking about when I say emotion. Or anybody who has LOTR soundtrack.. the music has emotion, and that is somthing that cannot be expressed as effectivly with rock or metal.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
Basically its what suits the scene best and thats easiest with orchestral music. As for my above suggestion, it wouldn't happen just whats needed to make everyone happy (i guess the person who started this thread). Just for an example, Joe Budden - Fire is whats currently playing on my computer, theres no way they could make that suit a mmorpg, nor would i want them to do it. I think they can keep it for Def Jam Vendetta II

you can also change the music files in AO, gridstream.org is also an online fan radio station for AO, They have a couple DJ's who love metal and play it alot as well.

Sometimes I deliberately choose silent game (a game with no music) over games with shiitty music because shiitty music has tendancy to fuuck up my brain.
That is by far the lameist thing I have ever heard, how can music make a game bad? Your not playing a game for the music your playing fo the game.
Every MMO I've played had the option to turn the sound off. At that point it's simply a matter of firing up a particular playlist with winamp, or whatever mp3 player you prefer.
Something like Brighter Death Now just doesn't fit in a fantasy based MMO as well as say, O Fortuna. In futuristic games, like AO, or SWG, Industrial/Techno/Electronica fits well enough. Metal might, but I wouldn't know, I got sick of it around the time the third Carcass album came out. It was getting repetetive then, and the new wave of black/death metal bands are as bad if not worse, since they all want to look like those dimwits in Cradle of Filth.
------- They panic, so... just hold them down I could live like this I'm closing in; hate all around I could be like this Hearing them; them in my head How can they be so sweet... sweet?
I think the closest you'll get to Metal in a mmorpg is Tabula Rasa, they have Chris Vrenna (former drummer for NIN) on the sound team, and a lot of the reviews and articles about the sound in TR (they won Best Sound @ E3) have mentioned it being "NIN Influenced".

Originally posted by HebrewBomb I'm sick and tired of orchestral, kiddy fantasy (like in FF11) themed music running in the backgroud of MMOG. It annoys me so much. MMOG should consider Metal as main theme or atmospheric music. I always listen to them while playing CS or Army. It feeds my PvP hunger. --------------- Some of my choice would be. Fear Factory, Sevendust, Megadeath, Iced Earth, Incubus, Symphony X, Stratovarius, [insert any good H. D. Metal here], etc.
KIDDY? YOU SAY THE SOUNDS ARE KIDDY? You are a fking noob, get lost man.. that's an insult dude.. an insult to the greatest composers
Hehe, isnt this the same guy who said he didnt like being polite IG? :P
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, not yet out, released their first teaser video not too long ago. It was a pretty cool video of the games graphical capabilities, but I noticed the music playing in the background was not the traditional fantasy music, though V:SoH is very much a traditional fantasy style game. The music was more of a metal type genre. The main feature of the video was these two dragon like creatures flying over the land, and so the music may have been picked just to assist the strong, powerful and mystical image of these creatures, though it could be the case that Vanguard:SoH may incorporate this type of music into the final game. We will have to wait and see.

I love Power Metal myself but, the point about music is overrated I think...
Even if you put my favorite group, eventually they will get onto my nerves and face the ultimate thruth all music played in MMORPG always meet: OFF!
Yet, I will admit some music like Kael Arena get turned off right away before anything else, while the average music just annoy me slightly and will eventually be off. I feel in EQ the worst music setting was in Kael...yet, this is the only music I even slightly recall.
Music setting is overrated, dont mind it to much, as long as I can turn it off(and keep walking and fighting sound effects on if I want them off this day, which vary with the challenge rating of the dungeons, if I am to strong for a dungeon, dont want any sound bothering me, if I am weak for a dungeon and the mobs are strong, I want to hear them walking and running around!
