Hi, I basically decided to join this forum just to ask this question. I´m looking for a new MMORPG with a solid pvp system. I used to play UO but when AOS (Age of Shadows) came out, I´ve been wandering aimlessly because that expansion completely ruined the game for me. I did give WoW a try but that game becomes beyond boring when you grind your way to lvl 20. Players have no chance to change the game world and its pvp reminds me of Unreal Tournament.
Anyway, these are the four aspects I value most in MMORPG pvp :
1) No specifically designed areas for pvp :
When I walk through the city gates and the guard doesnt see me anymore, I should be up for grabs. There is no excitement to walk in a forest during night if you know that another player just cant attack you, because this part of the world just happens to be protected by the power of wussiness.
2) No restrictions between different classes in pvp :
Ok so you´re an elf. That dont impress me much, you see I´m also an elf and I hate my own kind so it´s time to bury you my friend. PvP needs to be AP vs AP (all players vs all players). The most annoying thing in World of Warcraft wasnt actually the fact that you couldnt even communicate with the other faction (I suppose they removed it, because sensitive players do not want to hear the voices of laughter when they die) but that you couldnt open a can of whoopass on some ignorant infidel who just happened to belong to the same race as you.
3) Decent incentive in PvP combat :
Human -"Oh noes, I´m a goner"
Orc -"Now let´s see what I´m.....OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD nothing?"
Human -"It´s a good thing even the bread in my backbag was insured, because had I lost that item in this fight...Well, lets just say that Blizzard forums would have experienced a certain amount of negative spam"
If the opponent cant lose anything, how can you win anything? If you slay another player you should have free access to his belongings, because a ghost isnt supposed to run away with a helmet in his fist.
4) Skill over time and items :
Enough said.

So any suggestions? So far I´ve only tried out UO, Anarchy Online and WoW.

I think many ppl will tell you EVE online
There is no rival to the pvp Asheron's Call's Darktide server brings. Completely unrestricted, no such thing as a safe spot. As a matter of fact you'll probably be killed as soon as you leave the training dungeon, sort of a "Welcome to Darktide" message. And you can say goodbye to half your gold and that apple you picked up.
No I´m fine with space related mmorpg, cyberpunk, traditional fantasy etc. Anything goes if the system works well and players have freedoms.
EVE has some good pvp...but it isn't as FFA as you are looking for .... Darkfall will be the next game for you (if it ever comes out)

The only games like that are your asian games like Lineage 2, which is probably your newest choice. You also have Asherons Call on Darktide, but that is only a few years newer than your game. You will be doing a lot of catching up in order to compete. You have Shadowbane, which also allows you to build cities that can also be razed by other players. It is a free game now that used to be PvP. Check on the appropriate forums for more information on that game, because the server you pick is a big deal nowadays. You move over to your Sci-Fi realm and get EvE, which is your most modern FFA PvP game. That game isn't for most people, because it takes literally a couple months to get into the swing of things, but it is exactly the Sci-Fi version of what you're looking for. Hope this helps.

I've heard a long time ago that dark&light was going to be the mmo that wiil rule them all
I havent played Lineage II since C4, but I have enough hours logged into that game to give you a decent opinion of the pvp;
L2 uses the color system to display your toons pvp status. White - neutral, red - chaotic (pk'er) Blue - Honors (*note, blue names as far as pvp goes are the same as white names. Although if you pk a blue name i belive you get more "Karma") and there is also a purple status for your name that is temporary, which means a player can kill you with no consequences, but your name stays purple for like 15-30 seconds after your final attack on a player.
The only safe zones in L2 are the cities where players have set up shops and the item stores are. Pvp is very fast paced and requires a moderate amount of tactics. You wont fight every class the same way, not even close. You not only have to understand your chars strengths, but your oppenents weaknesses. Every class in a 1v1 situation has a chance to either win the fight, or if anything delay your opponent long enough to get the hell out of dodge.
The grind is tough, very tough. If you manage to get your char to a high lvl, expect pvp to become part of your day if you go play. When you die you lose exp. Without the aid of a healer for a %exp res, you'll lose 5% each death. When you get into the higher levels, losing 5% means someone just wasted a few hours of their life in vein ^^. You also have a chance to drop items, but only if you're red.
I still think L2 is the best mmo i've played to date. If you're looking for serious pvp i highly suggest L2
heres a link to explain everything in detail about the pvp.

I think Darkfall is about the only option you have at the moment.
If it ever comes out.
Yea this one should come out in time for your grandchildren to play it assuming they can find anyone that would be willing to buy it.
THe point the OP is asking tho is th ebest MMO thats out there NOW [not ones that may come out in a few years time].

Ahh a fellow lover of UO.
I left when they implemented stat loss and trammel. Ruined the game imo.
Eve is fun, but its not FFA. There is a large portion of the game where a lot of potential victims hide in to play that if you attack them you will get insta killed by the police. Yes if your fast enough you can kill them and loot them with another account... buts its a safe haven.
Second, unlike UO were items were relatively cheap. (spend three hours in a dungeon and you can pvp for a few days with several losses. Eve is much more expensive. You will probably spend about 60 - 80% of your time pveing to afford to pvp. When you do manage to get a kill most of the loot is blown up. Sometimes you get good loot, and sometimes space eats it. Thus making pvp not quite as profitable as other means.
However, should you join a large corporation and there are 100's you can zerg/blob it up and reduce your loses significantly while getting support from your guild in ships and items... but your still going to pve more than you pvp. Witch is why I eventually ended up leaving.
Lineage 2.
Not a bad game... but its heavily item based and time based. You can go from 1 - 40 in 2 - 3 days. However, you will have the equipment of a lowbie. The game starts off giving you Shots to use on your weapons so as a newbie you get used to using them and assume thats how leveling is done. By the time you get into your 20's D shots are actually costing you money. D shots basicaly imbue your weapon with extra damage. Every time you swing a shot is used. When I level it was like 23 adena per dshot, most weapons use more than 1 charge. Anyways by the time all the math was done, I was losing adena per mob. I finally had someone tell me that I needed to can the shots and level with out them... but... with out shots and pots or a bot... your going to have a hard time advancing as the mobs you can fight with out those are rather poor exp.
Things have changes as this was back in C3 but most clans wouldnt invite you till you hit 50ish, and there werent any people to group with as they all had their level 70 ish prophets or elders to buff them with. You might get lucky to get into one of their pling groups... but again you level faster than the money you make and then have to spend 5x or 20 x the time grinding for money to move forward.
As for pvp. Yes its open... but your penalized for killing. If you attack you go red after 5 kills you have a high probability of dropping an item on death (did I mention no one drops items?) So that bad ass sword you spent a month saving for has a high chance of becoming someone elses sword if you kill more than 5 people. And when you do kill someone you cost them an exp death... but gain nothing else.
But you can always do a quest to take away some of your murders.... but doing that every 4 kills... not my idea of fun.
Things may have changed as this was my jaded view of C3. The game was cool... but hard to get into with out friends, and rather expensive economy wise.
Darktide was a blast, played there for 3 years... but the server lagged quite a bit in pvp situations. Most mages use animation breaks to cast spells faster. Basicaly sliding back and forth while turning and hitting jump/forward you can move and your animation of casting gets screwed up. Over time this gets really out of synch and makes it rather tough to tell when spells are coming. All spells can be dodged so there is a nice skill factor... but when you dodge the spell client side, and due to lag server side get popped it gets old.
Add on top of that the rampant unattended combat macroing (leveling with programs to get mass levels) and the fact most of the pvpers are probably approaching level 200 now (meaning you gotta hit them 4 - 5 times and they gotta hit you 2 maybe) makes pvp a bit one sided.
Im currently twiddling my thumbs waiting for something better to come out.
Siege perilous on UO probably still the best pvp experience your going to get.
