FFXI really needs to do a digital download release. If it was 3.99 from D2D for the stand alone game Id give it a go, havent played since the original pc beta WAY back in the day.
MMO's cater to freakish no life hermits like myself... forcing us to go and mingle among other humans and risk sunlight exposure is just down right mean.

You sir, gave me my laugh today.
Yes, this is just the base game and nothing else BUT in 30 days time you're not going into the expansion areas anyways most likely and by then you'll know if you like it or not as you dont leave the "starter pack area" until about level 50+. GFL in getting that in 30 days.

Wow I never imagined that SE would do this... Its kinda weird for them to do this but I'm not complaining. Now if only they would release time cards then that would at least make me happy. I guess this is their way of saying we aren't dead so come check us out. The Wings of a Goddess expansion will be very sweet I cannot wait to see the new job classes they are adding. Its not really hard to level up in this game until you hit around 40+ then it sux real bad but I wonder how much of a difference this starter pack is going to make on the population.
Tru.. or u get the game free & pay for a pass later on. most of those are one time fee's. But ion no.. i played FFXI back in the day and it was kewl but does it still have that "if u dont play your acct ever 3 months with delete your characters" thing? thats just mean... play for years.. kant play for 3 months and all thats just gone lol. whew strict bitches huh
excellent. Maybe this will bring some new players into the fold. FFXI was my first paid mmo and since then I have played many others. The funny thing is...this is the best one I've played. Sure, its not perfect by far, but everything that I originally thought was wrong with it. I've found just as bad or worse in other games. I plan on returning soon myself. so if anyone here wants to try the game that hasn't that base pack can take you clear to lvl 25 or so. (which is a pretty long time in this game)
Ahh it is 3.99 for gods sake im sure you could find that in ya Piggy Bank good god and also any other mmo that i have seen giving a free trial is what 14 days max so here you get 30 days for 3.99 OMG might have to take a loan out for this one.

Really isnt the point, why should I PAY to trial a game, when its standard in the market to get it free.
SE isn't the only company to do this. I've seen other game trials distributed simiarly - you're basically paying for the disc and packaging (and of course shipping and such). It would be cool for them to have a digital download of it - though frankly, that'd be a huge download; not sure how inclusive it is or if there'd be alot to patch besides.
That you can't access the Zilart areas (ie. Khazam, jungles, etc) at 25 with the trial really shouldn't be all that great an issue - keep in mind, the Japanese players leveled past 25 before Zilart was released as well. It'll just require that people - gasp - start leveling in other places as well (something I think this game needs anyway - people are *way* too stuck on treadmill mentality, when the game really provides for much more).
I'm waiting for the first batch of posts to come through saying "SE is trying to cheat us! You can only level up to 25 because the jungle areas aren't available in the trial!" - to which I'll only shake my head and suggest that they look at the mob tables for other areas that are in the base game to find mobs in that level range.
Batallia Downs is a great area to level in at 25; the various entrances to Eldiemme Necropolis make for excellent camping spots - no mobs to wander into the camp and a zone line right at your back in case things go bad, and Jeuno one zone away - perfect for a HP in case of death. I don't know why that area isn't used more. Rolanberry Fields is another good option with mobs in the same level range, though not so well setup for xp camps as Batallia is.

That in my opinion will be impossible. Unless there is a massive influx those players will quit at that point. Why? Because simply they will have to buy the expansions to play anyway. Sure the first players discovered things etc etc but the new players will want to level in a game that requires each time a min of 3h especially when they won't have a high level job to support it. So I really doubt the starter pack will have any positive effect other for the a few players whom after their choice of server will have minimun effect on the overall game.
Sure we can say to them go search for mobs or what not but lets face it FF these days either you play a specific way or you don't.
A friend is not him who provides support during your failures.A friend is the one that cheers you during your successes.

Hmmm... perhaps. Frankly, if people make it to that point, where they've gotten their subjob (assuming they do) and then leveled a second job up to 25 where they'd hit that "wall", I think they'd be into it enough to figure something out. If it don't turn out that way, ultimately, I blame it on the player-base for being so regimented in how/where they play. There are acceptable alternatives to level in at any level range; regardless of whether or not people use them. It's a limitation the players have placed on themselves.
The results could well surprise us. I think 30 days is enough to figure out if people like it or not - two friends of mine who just started playing knew within the first week that they were staying.
As for not expecting people to look things up... don't players do that in pretty much any MMO for many other reasons anyway - quests, drops, maps, etc. etc? I'd consider that a given.

Sure is cheap.
yeah but isnt that just the stand alone game?
Dont you still have to buy several expansions?
yes i think thats only the stand alone game, but still for 3.99 its cheap, you get 30 days free, thats good if you want to give ffxi a try.

most of you seem to forgot Zilart is also an expansion. Meaning area such as Kazham and altepa desert are offlimited here.
You might be able to get to 25 and that is where the fun really start "Chocobo, chocobo rasing@ 20.... missions up to rank 5...etc"
But 90% of the players will give up by 8-15 because they will say "man why am i keep dying and why am i killing the same thing"
Funny how newbie never learn the idea "Keep your armor up-to-day"
none
Lol, nice now that is cheap
