Warhammer Online Dead?

*BAD News*

I have just been on Gamespot, and the following announcement has been quoted:

After more than two years in the studio, Warhammmer Online was suddenly pulled from the development schedule today.

The game's general manager, Robin Dews, posted the following message on the official Warhammer Online Web site.

It reads in part:

"It is with a great deal of sadness that I...inform the community that we have decided to discontinue the development of Warhammer Online and will be closing down this website with immediate effect. This has been a difficult and painful decision but it was taken following a full review of the progress of the game, costs to date and future costs of the project. As a result both Games Workshop and Climax Development Limited, the computer games developer, have agreed to terminate the development project. I would like to say a personal thanks to all of the people who have followed our development over the last few years, your constant support and enthusiasm has meant a great deal to us."

How can they do this?

They must have spent a fortune on this game. From what I understand, the game was only a few months from completion!

Has anyone else heard anything more?

No, that is very incorrect information for this time. Another company tried to make Warhammer online in 2004 (or so) but that project was canned due to lack of funding. Mythic (or EA Mythic) picked up the project and has been working on it.

Edit: It clearly states "Climax Development Limited, the computer games developer," they worked on the game before Mythic.

    This is canned - www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/whonline/index.html

    This is now - www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/warhammeronline/index.html

That was the old Warhammer Game. There was one in production before this one. Climax had it before and the rumor is GW did not like the route they were going with it and pulled it. Mythic since picked up the license and EA picked up Mythic so EA Mythic is now developing it.

*EDIT: Damn got beat to it

This news is 3 years old. Note the name of the developer....Climax. Mythic Entertainment is developing Warhammer: Age of Reckoning and they took over in May of 2005.

This is actually somewhat incorrect. The reported reason why Climax's version was canceled was in June of 2004, Games Workshop pulled it's funding because they had just seen the price tag on what it cost SOE and LA to release SWG, and they didn't have the kind of funding for that. Climax continued working on Warhammer Online until the end of September in 2004 when they announced they couldn't get a publishing deal together and had to finally cancel the project all together.

Oops, sorry all. I should have checked the date.

Sorry if I caused any panic, but it's one heck a relief for me :)

dont post something unless you are 100% sure it is true.

    Your first clue is this:

As a result both Games Workshop and Climax Development Limited

    Your second clue is this:

The game's general manager, Robin Dews

And your third clue is this:

    Warhammmer Online

EA Mythic is in charge of the development of Warhammer: Age of Reckoning (W.A.R.) and is headed by Mark Jacobs. Just tossing this info out for future reference as you may see quite a few references to Warhammer Online, which was Climax's version of the game that was going to be a 5 race, PvE game based only in an area of the Empire controlled lands. As much as I hate seeing the hard work of people become vaporware, I am glad this vision of Warhammer wasn't brought to life.

     Which brings us to:

Mythic is makign WAR: Warhammer Age of Reckoning. Not WHO: WarHammer Online.

A PvE game in the Warhammer world where you only get to play a Human, Halfling, Elf, Dwarf or Ogre is FAR too limited in the scope of what Warhammer is. The tabletop game as it's core is player versus player and to exclude that would be a travesty to the IP. The whole point of the tabletop is to pit your army against the army of another person, or as many as you want. Mythic moving to the RvR model now takes a person and pits them up against another player. They've turned the armies into a single character now and you are teaming up with multiple armies on both sides. You are not limited to the most basic of races, but you actually get to play on both sides if you so choose. Excluding people from playing Greenskins and Chaos alone was a huge blow to many fans of Warhammer and I was actually relieved when WHO was canceled.

  • if anyone saw screens and such of the one that was originally being published it was looking like you standard dungeon creeper killing giant rats and skeletons.  that is not what warhammer is and thank god that they canned that project which would have killed what is now a game everyone is waiting for:)

I actually remember the old WHO trailer I actually thought it wasn't too bad, the monsters anyways even though the game looked a little plasticky. The Nurgle Deamons, Necarch Vampire, and Skaven looked pretty crazy.

Here's a link to the climax warhammer online trailer.

Climax was trying to make it an open ended sandbox style of game, but they limited it far too much. You could only play 5 races and left out some of the most popular Warhammer armies as playable. Climax stated they wanted to go this route so that Games Workshop could integrate some of their campaigns into the game, but the whole point of a Games Workshop campaign is pitting players against each other. How can you do that in a PvE game? I am very glad Climax's vision of Warhammer Online wasn't brought to life, it would have been a major injustice to the entire Warhammer IP.

Climax was doing to Warhammer what Turbine did to DDo, glad it's dead and burried.

Well, since EA bought out Mythic I still someday expect an announcement that EA is canceling WAR so Mythic can focus on UO.

  • AdythielAdythiel Member Posts: 726

    dieplzkthx!

Can you imagine the backlash EA would get if they canceled WAR after it having shown to be so far along in development? I'm not a huge fan of EA, I've felt they've watered down the Madden series each year since the late 90s. I've been unhappy with other things they've done as well, but the fact Mythic has stated EA has left them pretty much intact and let them develop WAR as they see fit has me excited about this one. I loved DAoC. Some of my greatest memories in MMOLand come from that game. I fully expect them to bring out a game that can recapture a lot of the magic I felt when I first logged into DAoC. I mean...I've had a High Elf army for over 10 years for the table top game. Now I get to play one and live in the Warhammer world I've only been able to experience through a limited perspective? How awesome is that?
