Worth coming back? SWG or CoV!

malfarionmalfarion Member UncommonPosts: 25

Dear mmorpg.com community, I once played Star Wars Galaxies (Pre-CU, Pre-NGE and NGE) and managed to play it for a rather long time, were I actually liked it (of course I would rather have it pre-nge).

But I stopped due to moving, and havent played it for a good long time.

The same applies for CoV, I liked it, played it but got to a point were I was alone (grindfest + solo = boring, and I stopped playing due to lack of cash on the credit card).

Now I am giving once chance, but it have to be one of these two games, either SWG or CoV! could you please recommend any of them? or should I stay away from them?.

I have played MMO(RPG)s for a long time, and I have played many several of them, such as Vanguard, LOTR, WoW etc.

I loved the player housing in SWG, but I love the character customizing in CoV, could you point out which got something interesting?

So please tell me some points of the games that I can use to pick out what game I should start playing again.

~Thank you, Malfarion.

City of Villains got new IO, to add even more customisations to the powers of your character...as if you didn't already have tons of it!

With Rikti invasion, you will be able to group heroes more then just at Pocket D.

Does this question really need to be asked?  If this were Pre-CU SWG, then hands-down you play SWG...  But SWG: NGE is one of the worst games on the market...

CoH/CoV was fun when I played it, it got too repetitive and was limited in scope, but I hear it's come a long ways.  Right now, CoV is quite easily the better game.

Well I played SWG, but yesterday cancelled my sub. Honestly I tried the C-X trial  and have to say the game is alot of fun. repetitive at times but that is nothing new. In SWG its repetyitive as  well. But COH/COV is just so much fun. I play a Tanker hero side and a Mastermind villian side. I used to be a CH/pistoleer in SWG pre-cu. My current SWG characters are a Bounty hunter and a Jedi. I wont get a new game til WAR. Til then ill be switching between COH/COV and SWG. I like them both currently. The new SWG episode is pretty decent as well as COH/COV's new implementations.

I belive there are 14 day trials for both games, so try them without buying them and then choose which one you like best.

my advice is to not try neither as the new I10 upgrade was the best idea ever concieved to bring the public the best LAG in all existence.. as for swg.. heard it was dead.. id say save up some cash and wait for AOC or one of the newer titles

The lag is manageable and I already see a huge improvement since release.

The lag, although irritable, doesn't change the fact, this is the best MMO on the market, easily.

I personally think you should play CoV. I just find that SG bores me to death and with all the new updates and junk in CoV its pretty awesome

I don't regret my return to CoV. I have a lot of fun again, especially with the invention system and the invasions. And well one thing is for sure, those issues are fully free. No running to the store for expansions and such.

I really wanted to get into a Sci-Fi game again after playing the TR beta, but do not have enough time to invest in Eve Online right now. So I decided to try CoV then SWG again. I started with CoV and am enjoying it so much I think I have decided to go with this one. It should take me more than a few months to get through both CoV and CoH before I try something else.

With soo many new MMO's on the way, why not wait for those?

Personally i would never go back to SWG, its the most broken, sparsley population version of WoW with lightsabers ive ever seen

I play guildwars, no subscription, great pvp modes, mixing primary and secondary proffesions.

Really good storylines in PVE mode.

  • You obviously wanna come back to CoV to put a vote up on the CoV forums hehe.

I unlocked Pre CU and I will never go back.

CoV is still fun for me though I can't play more than a few weeks at a time.

Ever since they made it to where every tom, dick, and harry can be a jedi - I lost total respect for swg.

And ever since the release of the so-called pre-qual I lost total respect for anything lucas has anything to do with.

    CoV!

Swg isnt going anywhere....and it sucks because that game was awsome. But if this is a serious question then I would say CoV/CoH its good to have them both.

Now this isn't my opinion, this is my brother's. I've never played SWG but I have played CoH/CoV. The community on CoH is very nice and most people are a little more tolerant to new users. It's a fun game to both lay solo or team fights and has endless customization for your character.

According to my brother, SWG has gone through way too many changes that really made it go downhill quickly. I don't remember all the changes, but I know one of them was that they added items characters can buy at shops that aren't run by other players. Originally all items were bought from other character, but they changed that. Most of the other changes have also altered the game play in a bad way.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more specific, but I can tell you that CoH/CoV is a great game and you wouldn't be disappointed if you started that one again.

    OP,

Like you, I have played many of the MMOs on the market today and some which are now gone.  I left SWG immediately after the CU, but I went back recently.  It was terrible: deserted, lonely, ghost towns.  A giant empty universe.  And the new changes were even worse than when I had left, now everyone is a jedi.  I buzzed around for a short time and met a few people here and there who are actively roleplaying, which was cool, but then I just had to cancel again.  On a ten-scale, SWG is a 3 - and that makes me sad.  It easily had the potential to be the best MMO ever with the logest lasting populace, but well, they ruined it.

I left COH several months before the COV expansion released, because I had hit 50 and there was just nothing to do.  The truth is, there had been nothing to do from 35-50 back then except repeat a few missions involving the nazi group and the aliens.   But now I'm back - as of tonight.  I am downloading the client as I type this.  Why?  Because when you hit the forums and/or gaming mags you will see the game has about a 98% approval rating even after all this time.  You will see a tremendous number of posts asking how people like the game, and very seldom see a bad comment written.  Go check out Vanguard and compare the posts there . . .

I'm just leaving Vanguard.  I've been there since beta waiting paitently for them to fix the game.  I ran out of patience.  The game is terribly broken and getting worse.  I bought LOTRO two weeks ago and tried that, but <yawns> the game lacks - *something* - I can't put my finger on what it is, but the game is just lacking something that I need when I game.

I've thought about waiting for one of the new games to release, but really the only one I think I want to play is Conan, and that's just too far away for me to wait.  Oooh, my wife says we'll deffinitely be playing the Star Trek and Star Gate MMOs (but again, waaaay too far away).

Hope this helps.  If you'd like, I can come back later tonight/tomorrow and post my feelings after I officially re-enter Paragon City.

My advice would try another MMORPG.

SWG is not only less than a shadow of it's former self, but no one plays any more whatever the suits say.  Three people on Naboo, yah, that's fun.  Cookie cutter professions, towns, Failed WoW leveling system which makes no sense for the sandbox game it is.  Be another nail in their coffin is my advice.

City of Villains is a decent game.  Very good regular improvements, amazing customization, lots of fun, nice writing (re: modern mythos feel).  Problem with it though is it's shallow as hell.  Take away the gloss and turn off the lights of the themepark and it's you whacking people over and over and over again most proberly in the same maps over and over again.  Once they make it less shallow I'll be back to this one for good.  My advice would be yes if your a casual MMORPGer, because this won't be a problem then, but no if you play a lot.  Also, soloing I found insanely boring, more so than any other game although some seem to actually enjoy it.  EU servers (my home) are dead btw.  200 players at prime time and 50 other times isn't an MMORPG.  They need to merge the servers into the US.  I've no idea of U.S numbers but they seem decent from what I've seen.

So in conclusion, personally I'd find or wait for something else.

The answer to your question is painfully obvious, go with SWG, its much more massive in the player aspect, and its more complex, in a good way, CoV, like its brother CoH is extremely simplistic, which makes it boring, atlease with SWG you know that you will last longer.

I'm a casual player and I find both CoV and CoH to be very boring after a month or two.  They take repetition to an extreme even for an MMO.  There is no real world to explore, everything is instanced and a majority of the instances are exactly the same throughout the game.  If the OP has never played the game at all, then it would be a sure pick over SWG, at least for the short term, but I doubt he'll stick with it for very long, the game is just tedious as all hell.  Maybe now that management has changed, they will add some real depth to the gameplay and actually add a good bit of exploration factor as well.  Even if they do, it will be a while in coming and considering it's NcSoft, I wouldn't hold my breath.

With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

Casually I don't find it a problem but that's just me.  But I agree, it need's some real depth added to it.  In fact I think this it's only real flaw.  City of Heros/Villains, is never gonna be a sandbox game and doesn't present itself as one, however I do think there are a number of ways they could make it 'deeper' even in the short term, such as more NPC infighting like in Crotoa zone to the extent of other group invading different zones and the like and more instance maps.

Honestly, SWG is slowing dieing off. COH/COV has no competition in terms of super hero gameplay, therfore you can expect COH/COV to be pumping out more content and further improving gameplay more often than swg.

there hasn't been a good mmorpg release since pre-cu swg. all the other mmorpgs are all linear style other than Eve which i don't like. Basically all the mmorpgs coming out are all linear style (thanks to WoW being so successful) the developers seem to have forgotten about open ended snadbox mmos like swg once was and the way Eve is.
