I was recently doing some reading, and i realize that SOE has done some tweaks to the game. I am just wondering if it is still too early to try to play the game again....maybe i should wait for server merges?

Wait until the server merge
No Tenebroso, I don't think it's too early to go back, I played for around one month when the game was initially released and found it quite horrible in terms of stability so I quit. I have now returned (played for a week so far) and find it MUCH better.
You still have to have in mind that many servers are very empty, however if I remember correctly I think Florendyl, Targonor, Infineum and Tarridon? are the most populated ones with Florendyl being RP and Tarridon PvP. I personally recommend Florendyl if you're into roleplaying and I've had a great time there with quite a bunch of people playing at peak times. I have no big troubles finding a group around my level and I've seen many new people coming in.
Give it a try and stick with it for a while, I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

Overall, I would suggest returning, if you are among the many out there waiting for the "right" time to return, after Update 2 is implemented and after the server merges.
Not until the server merge at least. Possibly waiting for the free trial so you spend no money and no risk. This trial is supposed to represent what the game could be with performance boosts AND a filled content region. The rest of the game is supposedly going ot be done afterwards. (Though I am suspicous this is a last min effort to get a month worth of subs and break towards even for SOE).
At the moment all VG is doing is merging the severs as there so dead, I still see many annoyed users particulary newer hardware owners such as Geforce 8800 users, so probably not wise wise to 100% expect great performance as bug fixes are still greatly needed. Though you maybe better with older hardware. Oddly the patch notes never say much about performance fixes beyond memory useage. Lots of people feel the graphics engine doesn't clip obscured objects and thus the low FPS in towns.
In short wait a bit.
I say save your money cause theres TONS of games coming out soon and Bioshock is out Next week. Then go try the game next year when were might be some meaning patches because none of the updates so far have fixed major problems with the game. All a server merge is going to do is increase the number of people in a zone from 1 to 2 lol and still got ugly as hell character models.

I feel that for anyone who tried Vanguard before and quit because of flustration with the game performance, coming back now would be difficult only because you might have some left over preconsumptions of what you experienced before. As such, I would wait to come back AFTER game update #2 is released to the live servers.
For anybody completely new to the game or anyone who tried the game in beta but did not buy the game after release, coming back to the game now would be perfectly ok. The reason for this is because for these people they shouldn't have any preconceived doubts about the game. In essence, they are starting out with a clear mind. To them a glitch here or there wont be as big of a deal as it would be for someone who struggled through the launch of Vanguard. For someone who was here for the launch and left, seeing even one bug or glitch in the game now could set them off in a "the world is ending... omg why did I buy this game again!!! GRR!!!"
I guess what I am trying to say is that the game IS better (vastly better) then the way it was in Beta right now. But, the game will be even BETTER after Game Update #2 comes out which is slated for next week.

Considering hell hasn't frozen over yet I voted YES it is too early to return to VSOH.

Game is going from strength to strength but I would wait for the next patch as more performance and graphic card fixes coming.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
Leave it at least 6 months before coming back.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
I'd definitely say wait. The next patch is going to significantly change items so you'll just be figuring out how EE works and then they'll switch to level based equipment. On top of that it's really hard to find groups right now and the best content is in groups so wait fo rthe merges.
The server merges shuold happen within a month. If you want to wait till all the others do and have to fight over MOBs in the newbie area you go ahead and wait. I wouldn't advise it though. The soon you start the sooner you can get into other areas of the game.

Probably a key thing is that if (and that's a big "if") Vanguard really is rejuvenated by SOE, then it should be a really good game. If it actually does make it to being a really good game, then when you return shouldn't matter.
For my part, Vanguard is too much of an unknown to spend money on right now - if it comes right great; if not, well there are plenty of other games out there, and more on the way. The clock is ticking: if Vanguard does not sort itself out and have a free trial to pull in decent player numbers before games like Warhammer Age of Reckoning and Tabula Rasa launch, then Vanguard could be in real danger of being pulled entirely, as SOE will not be able to run it at a loss forever and they have their own projects to push.
Free trial island due out in 1 to 3 weeks

Well actually, SOE has closed the servers today to release GU2, with tons of fixes, tweaks and performance enhancements. Visit the VG boards, and you will see some threads on the subject. They also updated their information about GU2, stating that roughly one week after GU2 goes live, server merges should occur. Also some things that have been mentioned in GU2 will not go live until the mergers happen, generally features concerning gear.
SOE is giving an honest effort to fix the mess left behind. Its not to early to go back to Vanguard in my opinion.
P.S. - Archion, nice to see you on the boards.
so is GU2 started? great if it is i might not have to leave after all then. i am hoping they can fix my CTd every 2 minute problem. the sooner they patch GU2 the better then i will know if i can play again or not
Well, what after GU#2? Who is going to give it a shot? I will personally wait 2 weeks or so after the server merges, to see what happens.....
I've neer played but I'll watch for a trial just to satisfy my curiosity otherwise I'm married to Cox and Civ4:BtS as well as a few betas...
I'll wait at least until update 2 and the server merge to give it a try again.. My Shammy is level 40 and I still need a few quest pieces for my legendary orb from VT and Thel. So I'm not really in a hurry to play at least until some of the better players come back lol. If any of you ever did Thel runs, you will definitely understand why. I rather not go back now and try running thel groups with peons only making me frustrated all over again..

I STILL wouldn't come back with the server merges. The biggest problem in the past wasn't the number of players on each server, no, it was the content and lack of support from the staff. They are releasing some mumbo jumbo new update with stuff that was promised during launch. Brotherhood system? Guild halls? psshhh. Sigil failed and SOE is taking over, but they are gonna have to offer WAY MORE than that to get the player base they always wanted. The fact is Vanguard had a worse launch than EQ2 and they are far from getting subscribers back. I wouldn't say its impossible for them to succeed like EQ2 is now, they are just gonna have to offer way more than what they already are. SOE is awesome but Sigil ruined the Vanguard name so I would say give it more time before you come back. Join the bandwagon cause you will definitely hear about it when it comes, but for now stay put.
