Instead of getting them "back into it" try starting all new fresh characters and basically start over completely. Some of the most fun adventures I remember having was as a low level character. Hope this suggestion helps.

You are being honest according to your own limited experience.  It's not a lie if you believe it, so no, you're not a liar, just wrong in many ways.  WotC wouldn't be releasing a 4th edition if there wasn't some cash involved.  My hometown wouldn't have three RPG shops if there wasn't a way to support it - not to mention a full, nightly RPG session.   I haven't played a pen and paper game for over a year and a half, but if I found a decent group I wouldn't mind picking it up for a once-a-week session.

So, i'm just saying, Don't believe everything you think.  It might just be outside of your limited experience.

    To the OP:

I'm not a big fan of DnD, but it can make for some decent play.  If you usually DM (or GM, or whatever you call it), then just put together a decent adventure and ask them to play it.  If they don't get hooked then you either failed as a DM, or they just aren't into PnP games anymore.   Not everyone is cut out to be a DM, it's a rough gig.  Fortunately, I played under the best DM in the world - the guy is a real life bard when it comes to storytelling, so I was lucky.

I burned out on DnD and made up my own PnP game, which was a nice success within our own group.   It's a pretty intense process, so I don't suggest it.  I really just don't know what other game to suggest at this point.  I ruined myself by creating the perfect game that I knew I would want to play.  Good luck,

In the end Role Playing should rely little on the system that you use.  The group I play with uses GURPS but I have used DnD, ADnD, White Wolf, and Role Master.  The first thing you need to do is to choose a world.  Remember what all your friends liked to play?  Find a world that suits your tastes and will stimulate the players.  If all else fails you can create your own world though to do it correctly is very daunting.  I end up splicing together multiple worlds and ideas I gather from books.  If you do not have a decent setting people can get bored.  Then get everyone together and  find out what they want to do in this world.  Maybe your players want to be a group of villains instead of the good guys.  Throw out your ideas what you want and stress them but take player considerations into your world also.  They maybe just PCs but they should have some say, it's their game too after all.

If they still don't want to play you're going to have to face facts, they just don't play anymore.  Go out and find people to play with.  I've found multiple groups within 45 minutes of where I live to play with.  The key to getting people back into RP is to actually give them something interesting and stay on track.  If your sessions degrade to 1 hour of role playing and 5 hours of BSing people will get bored.  They can BS anytime they want but it's much harder to get people together to RP.

And to the person who said PnP RP is dead in this age.....n00b.
