Which Vista to Get?

Well, I'm in the process of getting a new computer and I keep forgetting which Vista to buy. 64 bits? 32 bits? Ultimate? Business?

If anyone has any insight, please post it A.S.A.P.

Thanks!

EDIT: While I'm at it, anyone know if upgrading from 667MHz to 800MHz of memory (power I guess..) is worth the $50?

vista will be fine by beginning of 08. tbh home premium or ultimate i think would be best. 32bit is for pcs that have 2gigs of memory or less..... 64 bit for anything more then 2gigs of memory.

Okay, this is a bit of a tricky question. The first part I can answer easily: 32-bit. You're going to have nothing but headaches running media apps on 64-bit. The second part is a bit trickier. I have to post to you the question of what do you really want to do with your computer? Home Premium is good enough for just about everyone who is a standard home PC user. The only benefit you will really see for the basic to intermediate user starts at Business above. That difference is the ability to join a domain, Home Premium only functions on workgroups. Mind you, this isn't that big of a deal since you can still simply "map drives" and share files easy enough. It's more a matter of network security. The rest of the features added by Ultimate are really moot for the average user.

Vista still performs slightly under XP right now, but the patches are cleaning a lot of fluff up. SP1 is just around the corner so I figure it should stabilise the system even more. You may find issues with running some older games. Vista isn't the most backwards-compatible OS I've ever seen. I stronly suggest a dual boot system like I run ( XP/Vista ). It will probably help you out a bit.

As for your memory, how much RAM are we talking? 667MHz/800MHz is the bus speed of the RAM. Truth be told, depending on your entire system spec layout you may not really see much of a change for the money. It doesn't hurt to be more future-proof, so if you can wing the $50 do it. That way if you upgrade your RAM amount later you don't have to worry about getting two different BUS speeds on your RAM.

Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

Well, thank you all for the help. I'm now able to say after two years of research, I'm a proud owner of a Dell XPS 410. Watched the price drop by $1000 in the years and I think now was the time to buy it. Managed to put all of the quality parts in with damn good warrenties and only cost around $2,700.

    Thanks again.

LOL after 2 years of research you ended up with an expensive dell!

    Ofc the price has dropped

With it housing the lower range of intel core 2(considering quad cores now even cost same ) ,last year mid range card and a power supply with under 400watts(not much nowadays ) i am totally shocked to see such a system even near the $2000 mark at all since with $2000 you can get a 600watt supply,8800gts(much better then last year 7900) and a E6750(better then the 6600 which itself beats the 6300 u got) and 2 years warranty.

I would imagine after 2 years research you would have gone with something cheaper and better .Also i would imagine if you did your research you would know 7900 G.cards are not even DX10 cards. Not many games for DX10 at the moment so i would not even suggest anyone upgrades but you bought  a brand new system at least you could have made it "future proof" for 2 years .

I just wasted practically my whole weekend messing around with Vista, and as far as I'm concerned I hope Microsoft rots after releasing this pile of garbage.

Well, I've been on these forums for about 2 years (More, less? Eh, can care less) and by now I should know how things work out. If the Dell is loaded with bloatware, delete it. Anything is wrong with it, fix it. It's not a life and death matter. Unlike most custom builders, Dell comes with incredible warrenties. Let's say you delete some bloatware and something bad happens; just send it back to Dell and get a new one. It's not a problem. I've worked with many dells before and all worked perfectly fine.

I'm not looking for a super computer that will load the US Mint in .0002 seconds. I'm looking for a nice little home computer that I can use to game and use all my necessary programs like Works and Finale. If there's a dent on the case, I can care less, I'm not showing this thing off in competition. Actually, my computer is cramped up right next to the wall on my desk, I won't even be able to see a dent.

I don't get you people and your hate for Vista. Let's say there were two cars lined up next to each other, both the same price. One was a 2000 Camry and the other was a 2007 Camry, which would you buy? If you can get the newer car for the same price, why wouldn't you? It just doesn't make any sense why you guys loathe the future software. So what if it's bad now? They're working on it. Hell, I've been on Vista before, it's not even bad as you guys say it is! I've run three different Vista systems and they all worked flawlessly.

And Hercules, I managed to put in 4g of ram and a 8800GTX, not a 7900. Pretty sure that the 8800 has DX10 and is pretty future proof.

Yes, the 8800 is DX10 compliant. Only thing that you will find a bit of a waist with the 32-bit OS is the 4GB of RAM. 32-bit only recognises 3GB (or 3.5GB with a little tweaking.)

As for the OS, your comparison is a bit skewed. Sure, you would think that buying the 2007 car would be best, but what if said car didn't work with certain freeways? Vista still has compatibility issues (though I admit it's getting better). The difference between the OS and a car is that no one is really going to "patch" a car.

Now, my argument with Vista (even though I use both Business and Home Premium) is that it does tend to try to think for me a little more than I want. That's only an issue if you are an advanced user really. Otherwise you won't see many problems with it. Frankly, I don't think it should be a big problem for everyone else. They've done a lot to fix its instability issues since release. Benchmarking still shows XP a little better in the performance department, but that will most likely change (this is assuming MS keeps supporting Vista and doesn't crap out on its support when they release their "new" OS in 2009).

I think the computer you got is fine for what you want to do. There's always going to be someone out there who says they could build a better machine for less...but if you're happy that is what counts. Personally, I agree with you about Dells. They do have great waranty service and I don't mind paying a little more for that. I have an XPS 700 for my Desktop but an Asus G2S for my laptop. Both companies have given me a two year full waranty.

But anyway, the big question you asked was which version of Vista to get. For you, I would say Home Premium is fine. Unless you want to have a domain network at home, then I would suggest Business at the very least.

after building my own computer, i really dont see why people buy them already built, like Dells, IBUYPOWER, Alienware...... i mean i saved 1000$ just building my own. But i guess some people just dont have the time.
