Searching the perfect crafting system

Hi there.

I mined valorite and verite and made GM-swords and armor in UO. I spent countless hours at the forge making perfect 100%-armor in Daoc. I exploded to death in the laboratory in EQ2 and mined tons of ore and made loads of pretty useless stuff in Wow. I also during a brief period of time hoovered around asteroids in Eve mining for ore. Right now I'm running around with my dwarf in the Greenfields looking for Barrow Iron ore in Lotro.

But I still haven't found a crafting system that appeals to me as much as the system in Horizons.

Any advice what game I should try?

Sticks and stones can hurt my bones but words can never kill me...errr unless they are spells and incantations...

Normally, if someone came a lookin' for crafting stuff, I'd point them to Everquest II, Horizons and Vanguard... Have you tried Vanguard? Also, what's your problem with Horizons, is the economy shot these days?

Anyway, I guess if you want suggestions, you'll have to explain what it is you're after in more detail.

The best you could get was EQ2's actual crafting with DAoC's salvaging, RVR for certain material vendors and especially spellcrafting/customization. Since no game fused those 2 yet, i'd say go with EQ2, but if youre unsatisfied with it as you say, really not much else to do.

You might look for UO freeshards with extensive crafting scripts or focus on it though.

Can be a little overbearing at the start,  but Anarchy Online has an excellent crafting system.  There is even a class in the game that does nothing BUT crafting,

Here is just a taste of what you can look forward to.

If ur looking for a perfect craftsystem, you should check out The Saga of Ryzom, really the best craftingsystem i have ever seen in a game

No doubt Horizons crafting is still the best especially because of the construction option. EQ1 was good back in the day, but they have dummied it down on the one hand so it's too easy to become a master craftsman now, while also adding  tiers of raid drop ingredient recipies which ruined crafting as a pursuit for the average non raiding player.

If Horizons ever launches a new server because of their supposed revival, I would play it again. I am not sure if there is a quality game to be released in the near future that has promised to deliver on crafting.

Thanks for the input. I'm dl the trial to The Saga of Ryzom now, it looks interesting.

    Haven't tried Vanguard either.

  • Vanguard, end of discussion.

Takes EQ2's crafting system to the next level... if you enjoy crafting, go for Vanguard.

Goonzu Online has a very unique and honestly amazing crafting system.  (Probably the best one I've seen in a F2P game - and definately my favorite so far.)  Monster drops only consist of components, and all usable armor, weapons, etc have to be crafted by players and every item in the game is bought and sold on an open market in player-run towns.  This means every item in the game used by players with the exception of a few pieces of newbie equipment earned in quests was at one time made by players.  If the movement and combat systems were not so flawed and boring, I think Goonzu would be one of the best games out there.  However, as far as crafting and market/economic systems go - the game does shine in those areas.  There are people who play purely crafting characters (as crafting is one of the ways to level) and enjoy the game very much that way.

I don't get how anyone could recommend Vanguard, that game is a total failure, crafting aside.

Accually Crafting was the only thing that was original and good, rest was total crap.

I was crafting only for my guild (almost got to lvl 40 tailoring), but I don't know how much fun it would be now with established crafters on servers. (server?) It was nice though, there would be real connections between crafters/gatherers, and there was a crafting community unlike WoW, or <insert random MMO>.

    Wurm Online

In all the other games producion is just an addition (seems MMO devs seems to think it is an stantard something that should be in it). However In Wurm online fighting is just an addition. Even depending on with server you are.

What i really would like to see is the possibility to create unique weapons and armors and not only in the way of stats but also looks.

Many games has like slots on weapons where you can put crystals or whatever to change some stats on the weapon but thats not what im looking for. I would like to see the possibility to create my own weapons and armor from zero. Lets say i can start by mixing several different metals and to make the blade. Then i can make the handle whit maby some different types of wood and metals or even some type of stone. Then i should be able to use different tempreturs in the forge and so on and everything should effect the stats of the weapon.

Lets now say i got sword whit stats and all but this should only be maby 1/3 of the crafting. Next thing might be to reinforce it in different ways or maybe a priest could bless it and so on. And every step should have a chance of failing. The stronger outcome your looking for the greater the risk. A fail should do everyting from maby just losing some basic stats on the weapon to being completly destroyed. Some times you should be able to keep working on the weapon and some times a fail should result in a creation block and leave you whit what you have made so far.

Also i would like 1/3 of the crafting to be just about looks and that should probably not be so risky but very expensive. I guess the difficult thing there is creating a system that really gives you the chance of defining the looks of the weapon. Maybe lets say that you can change about 20 different parts on just the handle depending on how you created it in the previous stage. Many different motives and patterns and adding some silver, gold, crystals, horns and whatever else you can find.

Then ofcourse you must be able to name the weapon and maby put some kind of signature on it. Who knows maybe there could be a way to make your crafting become  sets and stats will be added as a bonus if people use serveral items of made by you.

I guess what i want to see is the chance for a crafter to make something really legendary and so difficult to make so even if you know the exact way to make it you still need to spend maybe months to copy the process  and  still needing tons of luck make it through the enchants and reinforcements and even the basic crafting whit out breaking or blocking it. And if you would actually manage to make it.... wouldent you just do one last thing so your sword would be the best and awesome looking on the server?

Ok i could keep this up for hours but im sure you guys got better things to do then read my wet dreams.
