So I'm looking for a new computer. After asking around in one of the computer stores, one of the shopkeepers gave me this one:
Intel Pentium D 915 (2,80GHz) Dual Core
1 GB DDR2
500 GB Hard drive (2x 250gb)
MS windows vista home premium
DVD reWriter Dual layer
ATi x1650SE 512 MB Hyper Memory + TV - Out
6x US 2.0, 1x IEEE 1394 Firewire Network DVI
18 in 1 memorycard reader.
Now this computer is about 700 euro's, and I think thats around 750 ~ 800 USD.
I'm stricly using this computer for gaming.
so my question is: Is this worth the money, or is it a rip off?
and two, is this card compatible with DirectX 10?
p.s. Building my own PC is not an option.
Comments
1. No it isn't worth it.
2. DX9 card.
Now with 57.3% more flames!
Alright, I'm not going to waste money on a directX 9 card. thank you.
I'd have to agree with Pyro here. If you are spending the money on a new computer now, future-proof it as much as you can. You will definitely want a DX10 compatible card. Downside, those cards themselves go for $500+ so the price of your computer will take a nice jump. Also, make sure you get no less than 2GB of RAM. If you will be running Vista, it will recognise 3GB in the OS.
"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."
Not all DX10 cards are $500+. . . hell I got my ATI HD 2900XT for $380, and that is the top of the line ATI DX10 card. Powerful too. . .
You can find a nice 2600XT for about $150-$200. DX10 compliant.

Alright, thanks
I have another one though.
3.00 GHZ DUal Core,
2 GB
250 Hard drive,
Vista home premiums
It has an Nvidia 8300GS 128 MB.
This one is only 580 USD.
Would this be a better deal? How would this computer run high end games like Bioshock, for example.

True, I should I have said around $400. Mind you, I am not a fan of ATi cards yet. I've still had too many compatability issues with them and certain titles. Though, since AMD took over those issues are going the way of the dinosaur. I'll probably be a convert before too long.

Unfortunately, I don't know diddly about the 8300s. Nvidia doesn't even have their specs listed. However, I will say that Bioshock was a lot less of a system hog than I thought it would be. I would say, off the top of my head, that it will run it. Probably won't be able to have everything cranked up, but it will run it well enough. If you could get an 8600GT you would probably be in a much better position for gaming.
I play Bioshock without any issues on my laptop as well with uses the 8600M GT, but it does has 256MB dedicate and it borrows another 768MB from my 3GB system RAM.

Ibuypower.com has great systems for your price range
That looks like a solid computer. . . do you know the exact processor that is in this computer? Anyways, my suggestions to to pick this baby up for 300 Euros (correct conversion?) and then take another 150-200 Euros and buy a better video card. Other than that it looks good to me.

I'm going to toss my vote in with Keebs. For the costs of the base machine you could afford a graphics card update pretty easily.

Get a 8600 GTS or above and youre good to go...
Edit: and make sure that your PSU can handle the card.

Well, I'm look at the advertisement here, and it says:
Intel Pentium D Processor 925
3,00 GHz Dual core.
thats pretty much all it says.
Edit: The computer is from the brand Acer.

I wouldn't do it. Don't get a computer with an intel processor that's not a core 2 duo
