Poll on lifetime accounts in WAR

A lifetime account like in LotrO lets you pay a good amount of money, let´s say 150-200 $ when you first subscribe and you don´t ever pay a penny for the game again (except for big expansion packs)

My question for the WAR-community is:

I'm one of those lifetime members you speak of from LOTRO

It was a nice thought, I wish I hadn't though.  I haven't played in over 2 months and I don't plan on going  back.  In terms of value. I really wasted my $199 lifetime membership on 4 months of play (5 and 1/2 if you count my beta time) at 15 bux a month thats  75 dollars. I stll haven't even gotten close to the membership fee I paid for.  That being said...LOTRO was a very nice game graphically but a big letdown on the crafting and mechanics.  I found that it just didn't have enough in the way of innovative game mechanics or PvP to capture my attention.  PvP was a farce to be honest.  I won't go in depth but let's just say it was either a zerg fest one way or another with many hours spent just staring (literally staring) at each other.

I wouldn't mind EA Mythic doing a lifetime membership but I would like to try it out for a month before I decided. In LOTRO they only gave the lifetime membership offer to pre-orders. They just recently came out with another lifetime membership offer but it is 100$ extra. (299 instead of the original 199).  So time will only tell.

I voted "Yes". Offering it would be cool, however I doubt I'd take them up on their offer. MMO's are so hit and miss. Very few MMO's are worth that amount of money (to me). Of the many MMO's I've played, there's only one that I would have made out on that deal.

    so...

I think it hurts the game progress in the long run. Just theorycraft here, but if everyone bought a lifetime account for the game then after around 14 months, there would be no income coming to the game at all.

If i could see myself playing a mmo for more than a year i would do it but i wouldnt take the lifetime sub blindly. Maybe if i had a chance to change my subscription after the first couple of months when i have a more clear view of the game
Well from a players standpoint it makes sense. If you can see yourself playing the game for a long period of time then by all means go for the lifetime deal. From a Company standpoint it isn't the best of ideas.

I voted "no opinion" because even if they did it wouldn't affect me!

If I see a company offering lifetime subscriptions, then I know they are not confident that their product can retain subscribers over the long run.

I voted "Yes." I'd be all for that offer.

This is something that might be a possibility for me after I had played the game for 6 months or so. I like the idea of it just I'm somewhat leary of any new MMO at this point. Alot of crappy games have been released lately.

Fans would love it, but EA/Mythic would not. therefore, it aint happenin.

Next poll - should the subscription be free and we just pay for boxes and expansions? Like guild wars?

If i played the game for a year and really liked it I probably would get a lifetime.  I would have to wait at least a year to find out if it might be worth it.

  • garbonzogarbonzo Member Posts: 260

my lifecycle for most games is a year.  I'd rather pay a little more per month and have the ability to end my account when I want.  also, if I find a game that keeps my attention long enough to actually break even or save money with a lifetime sub (14+ months), it will have to be a really really excellent game that I probably won't mind paying a little extra for anyway.  what i do like, though, about lifetime subs is the lack of pressure to play if you want to take a break - i.e. don't have to sit around thinking "dang, I paid $15 this month for nothing..." it seems to promote a more casual, long-term mindset.  I don't care if WAR offers it, but I won't take that option myself.

Preorder with reduced founder pricing - absolutely.

    Lifetime account? Not a chance.

Even my most favorite mmorpg of all time didn't get more than 8 months from me. I would get tired and move on long before it became worth it for a lifetime account. WAR may end up beating that record - but even so, you would have to play for years to make it worth it, and I doubt I will stick with ANY game (yes, even WAR) for that long. Cancel and Resub later maybe. But not for years straight.

A lifetime account for such a steep price is highway robbery. You may think the company is doing you a favour, but believe me - they are ripping you off most of the time.

First of all, this is the sort of thing they typically offer very early on in a limited way. Thus, the game is fresh and you will not have played long enough to figure out if it will have longevity. So, they wave this plan in front of your face, restrict it based on time, and force you to decide while the game is shiny and new.

Some think, "It pays for itself in just over a year!" And, yes, it does, assuming you play with no breaks and actually use the time you pre-paid for - unfortunately you have little clue at that point where the game is going and if you will be going along with it.

It is a clever, nearly evil marketing tactic. They know the average player will not play that long and make it worthwhile. They know they are making out better than if you paid $15 per month for months you wanted to play. They know it is in their best interest to get as much money from you as quickly as they can before the sheen wears off. Any company would love to take $200 from you all at once than pray you give them that much over 1.25 years.

So, I voted no, because I hate seeing people ripped off, and most are. It does benefit some people, though, so I am not too adamant about it - caveat emptor, I suppose. But, having talked to LotRO people who bought this type of account, I can say that two quit totally within 3 months, one just quit a couple weeks ago, and the other guy still barely plays.

I think the plan does show a certain lack of faith in your game, and after having played that joke LotRO, I know why they did it - they were not confident their game could hold the average person for 1.5+ years. So, they wanted to take all that money before people realized the game was a boring turd with a sexy sheen and a rich IP.

P.S. Note that a lifetime account, as far as I know, cannot have any guarantees. Things like termination of service, either due to your behaviour or a failed game, can make you lose every penny. If they decide to drastically alter the game, like NGE, you cannot get a refund. They have your money, come hell or high water.

If there is no monthly payment and I enjoy the game enough, absolutely!

  • arkanevarkanev Member UncommonPosts: 82

To me when a Lifetime account payment option is avalaible at start its ring to me like : "We might fail, so let's try to get as much money as possible right now"

I think WAR won't have lifetime option since, if you think your game is good.. it will last more than 200$ worth in months played.

  • Mythic allready said they will not offer a lifetime account.  They said its bad for the players and its bad for the business.

I agree with them and voted no.

  • KelsonmacKelsonmac Member Posts: 313
I think it would be a good idea. However, I would wait to offer it after the game had been out six months . . . after which they could give a small discount to those who have been subscribers from a certain date, and perhaps an even larger discount to those who pre-ordered.

"Mythic already wants to raise the subscription fee in comparison with other MMOs. They are doing this because they claim it hasn't been increased in some time."

So we're looking at $19.95 a month instead of $14.95?  I hope not.

I say no to the lifetime account, It is like getting a life time worenty on a computer that you know you would have to replace in 2 years.

  • gargarasgargaras Member Posts: 14

i voted no and the reason is that iam playing mmo's about 11years now and from all the games i have played 1 kept me 3 years and was ragnarok online(yes the 2d game :p)!maybe there it worth geting a lifetime but the idea of lifetime subscription is no good!maybe it will be good enough to play it but as another person noted if it will worth it i will be paying it for years!

  • To me offering lifetime account means that you will probabaly be playing the game for less than a lifetime...

I seriously doubt there will be an increase in sub fees.   Because they are competing with WoW (as all MMO's are) and WoW's fee is still $14.95.
