I was wondering why all the complaints about the features offered by SOE.  So I thought I would throw my 2cp in about how see Everquest and Everquest II developing.

Legends of Norrath TCG

SOE decided to develop a totally free Trading Card Game set in the Norrath universe.  Not everyone is into TCG and not everyone cares about the Norrath universe.  But let's take a close look at what we're getting here.

  • Free to play game
  • Available in Everquest and Everquest II clients
  • Full starter packs, booster packs and boxes of packs available for purchase from the online store.
  • Stand alone client to play
  • FREE Starter packs for Everquest and Everquest II players
  • FREE loot card for Everquest and Everquest II players
  • FREE booster pack drops (on a separate loot table from regular drops)
  • FREE Loot cards randomly dropped offering amazing items!
  • Cross game play between Everquest and Everquest II and stand alone client
  • Full engaging single player campaigns
  • Can be used as deep an engaging mini-game for downtime

Station Exchange Servers

Whether we like or not the secondary market is here to stay.  I for one hate plat farmers, plat sites, etc.  I hate all the illegal sweat shops that spam and suck resources from servers like locusts.  That said some players want to spend money instead of time.  And well SOE is a business and so they or the illegal sites are going to meet that demand.   With Station Exchange you get the following.

  • Exclusive servers dedicated to Station Exchange.  Cannot affect normal servers economy
  • Buy and sell in game items, money and characters in accordance with the EULA
  • Ebay style auctions and straight sales available

Station Players

Several website became very popular with Everquest players, one being Magelo which offered a profile of your character out of game.  Also guilds were needing homes to host their websites and were paying companies like Guild Portal to host.  So SOE began to offer these features within Everquest II.  Most of these features come within the free with the game, and some you can pay extra for.  With it you get the following.

  • Character profiles updated automatically.  No need for third party tool.
  • See character information including guild, discoveries, etc.
  • Leaderboards for guilds and players ranked by server or global.
  • Chat with guild outside of the game.
  • Full listing of spells and items without being a spoiler.
  • FREE guild website and forum using the powerful tools of the official forums
  • FREE player signature for the forums with character information dynamically updated.

Those are just a couple things I heard people moan about, and frankly I see them as resources that don’t break the game, but offer something extra for players without leaving the SOE websites.

ive played the card game for about 16 hours total. i can also say that if you dont spend RL cash your going to get nowhere, period. if you dont understand this you naturally havent played against someone that has spent 300 bucks on packs.

with all the issues in this game, why they would allow an outside developer to develope a card game that awards ingame items that mess with the balance of gameplay is beyond me. wait no it isnt...its just to make more money.

if you need me to post exact details on how these awards unbalance the gameplay, just say so, i can write you a thesis on it.

The TCG was developed by a company which supposedly the best online TCG makers out there.  So great was this company Smed went ahead and bought them and re-dubbed them SOE Denver.

If you play magic the gathering do you buy decks?  Yes!  If you plan on fooling around and dabbling in the game you STILL have to buy something.  But in Legends of Norrath you can dabble for free and if you wish only play  the single player campaign.  Additionally there is potential for packs to drop from mobs as well.  Sure this isn't going to be the best option for hard core players, but it's ok for casual players who use LoN as a mini-game during some downtime.

The loot cards are FLUFF mostly and do nothing to break the game.  That is like saying veteran rewards or new mounts break the game.

Basically what SOE did was to develop another online TCG like the one's they have been making.  And there are people who prefer to play that rather then, or in addition to a game like Everquest II.  But SOE went the extra mile and intergrated LoN into the game clients with in game rewards and by doing expanded the content and fun available from within the client further.

I don't see why this is a problem?

I kind of want to try out this card game now. Sounds like an interesting mini-game to break up the monotony. I don't think I would have a problem with it, but I have taken about a month break from EQ2 so I don't know if anything has changed drastically sense then.

Also I didn't know that is why SoE created a new branch in denver. I remember hearing the news at my campus that they were hiring programmers which was probably for this card game. *sigh* I wish they were hiring 3d/texture artists but oh well.

Uh... the items I've seen so far are subpar to raid drop items.  The coolest thing I've seen so far are just new illusions and styles.  Nothing I would wear into a raid.

I played the game today its a bit long and kinda confusing at first .I played for 3 hours and still dont get it fully and ive played magic forever and am really good at that . what I do like is it does add a lil something and it is tied to the other games and thats a good thing , but what I also know is I spent a grip of RL cash on Magic online and will never do that again. they turned out way to many Decks way to fast and it  ruined it for me . If sony is smart they will keep this tied to the game's  very  closely and bring it along as they bring the  other 2 games along and not get all crazy with the card game and make new decks all the time that will suck but maybe bring out new decks with expasions and give away new decks when you buy a expansion things like that will make the game fun and not to hard core.
