I'm starting to hear more and more about MMORPGs for the 360 these days. They haven't made a good console mmo yet, but if they did, do you guys think this is the next big step in making MMOs mainstream? Marvel and Square-Enix seem to be shooting for that.
Comments
They haven't made a mmo for the console yet tbh, the reason none of them are good is because they are designed for the pc then ported to the console, a good console mmo would have to be designed from the ground up to be on the console. Most likely a mmo for the console would be a very mainstream game, so most likely successful but most likely it would not be pcs, since pc users generally don't like games designed with consoles in mind due to them always being dumbed down.
How many consoles have keyboards attached, yeah right,, less than 5% of them. Without a keyboard, playing a MMO is a joke, you are supposed to be playing with others and while voice can substitute somewhat when in parties, lack of keyboard still prevents you from interacting most of the time.
Hence most MMO producers don't have console high on their list of things to do.
You won't find a lot of MMO's on the 360. If you want MMO's, the best platform is obviously the PC, but in terms of consoles, Playstation 3 would be a better choice. Sony has SOE working on MMO's for the Playstaion 3, and Sony also has an exclusive deal with NCsoft for MMO's on the Playstation 3.
Theres a few games speculated to be out on the 360. Age of Conan will definitely be, FC's other newly announced game Secret World is supposed to be as well.
check this link. Theres a few cancellations there. Stargate Worlds is suppose to come out on the 360 also

ya all the controllers on the 360 are USB. You can even use the controllers on your PC if you want. Honestly, porting from a PC to a 360 is not that great of a leap.

I doubt that it will ever make it's way to a console but one of the first things I noticed about Tabula Rasa was how easily the controls could be ported to a console.
Final Fantasy XI is the only successful MMO that I'm aware of on console. It was not as popular as many PC-only MMO's, but it was definitely successful. It was designed as you say, from the ground up to be on the console. The only problem this caused was the fact that the initial controls when playing on the PC without the PS2 controller are horrible. And the initial graphic settings. They need to be configured by the user on PC in order for the game to look at all decent.
i basically do this already. I use my wireless xbox controller and the PC port to play world of warcraft. Its GREAT and a lot more fun also its easy on the old wrist. I still have my PC and mouse plugged in but don't need them really. The wireless headset works in vent... one joystick is set to wasd and the other is mouse... left mouse click is set to my left joystick when i click.. and right left mouse click is commanded by right clicking on my right joystick. I have important moves set to the triggers and the side button above them. I target using tab which i set to the side buttons. Its GREAT i mean i actually enjoy the game again!
Fun Fact: Sony Online Entertainments Corporate Office is located on the 10th level of hell in dante's inferno the catholic church censored this part of the book and deemed it to horrible to be written...

You are right on the porting part. Its much harder to port from Windows to the PS3. It only took Mythic 6 weeks to port WAR onto the 360 before E3 2006.

Crimecraft is suppose to come out on Windows, PS3 and the 360 as well
Last year, Vogster Entertainment announced it has licensed the Unreal Engine 3 from Epic Games for a secret project. Today, the developer has revealed that the game will be a MMO for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titled CrimeCraft. The following is the game's description provided by Vogster:
The game is set in a modern world. Players will take part in the political, economical and social life of a big city. They will run businesses, engage in commerce, and suffer the consequences of confrontations with criminal groups and shadowy law enforcement figures. Powerful AI will support the constantly changing atmosphere of the streets and enable players to feel the live pulse of the Megapolis.
Just a heads up, Final Fantasy XI and Phantasy Star Universe can also be played on the Playstation 3, as well as Everquest Online adventures.
It would be nice if they would give you keyboards and mice with consoles instead of Controllers. FFXI was designed for the console and it was somewhat awkward to play on the PC unless you plugged a controller into it. I notice that the wired controller for the xbox360 is compatible with the PC and Microsoft's XNA Game Studio is able to be complied for both the PC and Xbox360. I have a feeling that it's going to go the other way and us PC gamers will be forced into using these crappy controllers that are annoying to use and have a billion different button combinations to press. I don't see what is the big deal of including a keyboard an mouse with console systems. Most of them have internet browsing now so it would make sense to have them.
I left some games off my list on purpose. Buggy non native games don't belong on there. But I added them with notes anyways.
All the info I have on those games say there non native PS3 games. Meaning it will only play on the current US 20GB and 60GB PS3. They will not work on the new 80GB or the future 20GB and 60GB models at this time. And they most likely never will. The reason for this is simple Sony stripped the Emotion Engine(ps2 emulator) to save money. And the Europeans and Korean systems never came with one for cost savings. So buy a 60GB while you can as the 20GB are gone.
What does this mean? We'll the new PS3 are relying on software emulation. And thats tricky at best. Ask Microsoft how much that cost them. And Microsoft had a lot easier of a job than Sony. The change to the Cell was a major jump. Something like 68% of PS2 games are working in some fashion on the PS3. And then its not guaranteed to work on every system. You can read reports online of one game working for the majority and buggy for a few. Like is the case with FF XI-2, Phantasy Star Universe, Tekken Tag, FF X, FF X-2, etc.
Half of my collection of 30+ PS2 titles are useless to me on my PS3. And I have the emotion engine and software emulation. Game breaking graphic bugs pop up in the same location in FF X-2, Phantasy Star, and Grand Theft Auto Vice City every time through. Or you get major GUI or buttons that won't work in some games. Hopefully they will work on the emulatoin for the next patch. But I don't see them doing much especially after statements I have read on the subject.

mmo's on 360 will probably suck, just because crafting will be a pain, and combat would be too. unless its a mmofps

You can use keyboard and mouse on 360 and PS3
Buy a computer... seriously.
It's kinda expected you get a controller instead of a keyboard and mice. The Amiga days are over...

Did you read the post I made? The whole premise was that they should include a keyboard and mouse with console systems so that the games can be better done cross platform wise. I have a computer obviously. The problem is that controllers are no good for complex MMO systems. You can plug a 360 controller into your PC, but playing an MMO with a controller is horrible.
A new MMO for PS3 was just announced: Angel Love Online. It's a port of a free PC MMO and highly doubtful to be released outside Japan because it's fully 2-D.
Unless it's been changed recently the Xbox 360 does not support PC mouse devices.

Then take your keyboard and plug it into your Xbox 360? also I'm pretty sure in one of the live ads they are adding a xbox360 keyboard for communication, so there ya go.
why would u want to spend all that money for a console, when u can spend that same amount for a computer(and u don't have to waste money on a controller) and a computer can write ur hw, browse the internet easily, and can balance ur checkbook, and play ur favorite games with a mouse and keyboard. So why waste money buying a console game if ur just going to play it like a pc anyways?

Show me where I can buy a PC that can run games with similar graphics to 360's for 400bucks cause I need one.
its not that hard, sites similar to newegg.com sell comp parts pretty cheap, so just buy the parts and put it together, its like legos, of course its hard to get a good pc for 400, but for just like 200 more bucks u can get so much more out of it, and think about it, consoles only stay on top for 2 years max, and then new stuff comes out, pc's can last years, and are much much much cheaper to upgrade, mostly because u usually only ahve to ever replace the video card, or motherboard, or memory(which are all expensive, but u can do it one step at a time)
