No. The problem with DAOC (and I will get flamed for this) is the very design of Realm vs. Realm as the end game. Once you level up to max, all there is to do is run around in zerg groups and do this Realm vs. Realm (P vs P) combat, and that's about it. And that gets boring.
The magic of MMORPG's, in my opinion, lies in preserving the forever "never-completely-explored" game world. Once players have done and seen all there is, then the game dies. Also, once the low level game dies out, the whole game dies out. Mythic can thank their decision to implement a "/20" levelling command for that (i.e., players with level 50 characters can make new characters which start at level 20).
Had Mythic concentrated on a vast and primarily P vs E game world, they wouldn't have subscription problems today. And yes, offering free play is indicative of a subscription problem, at least it is to me.
I believe that every time a player logs into a game, he/she needs to think, "There are still some things I haven't done; things I could explore." This is what keeps a game alive.
The problem isn't the lvl cap. The fact that there IS a level cap that is attainable is what makes DAoC a lot better than games like Diablo II.
The problem lies with NF and ToA. ToA ruined a huge part of the game because basically if you had the items, you were good. I just recently saw an Eldritch video in which he did SOO many noobish things it was ridiculous, although they always won and he always killed people because of his ToA stuff. I swear to God the only spells he ever used were stun-nuke-nuke, he rarely if ever panned while running away, and always wasted time by not casting early enough. ARGH. But no problem, ToA to the rescue! While people who aren't power gamers are busting their ass off to even be slightly competative.
Worse yet is NF. I won't even go into a rant now about this pile of crap...
The only thing Mythic can do to fix ToA is to remove it. Here's my (shamelessly stolen) idea: create a classic server, no ToA, no NF, just SI. Of course no more gothis for annoying ports and keep RAs as they are now (the NF RAs). ToA and NF keep sieges are the worst thing to have happened to this game, and a classic server would pwn.
Not at all. Mythic is stuck in teh self-defeating mentality where "Grind=Subscriptions". DAoC has three different grinds (treadmills, whatever) right now:
1. The "I've got to get to level 50 so that I can RvR" grind 2. The "I've got to RvR to earn more realm points to increase my Realm Abilities so that I can be more effective in RvR" grin 3. The "I've got to complete all of the ToA trials so that I can be more effective while pursuing #2" grind.
Like someone else stated, once you get to 50, there is hardly anything new to look/hunt/quest for, just an endless grind of ToA trials and RvR conflict.
I've played at these levels so I am aware of how fun these activites can be but man, they sure do get old.
Originally posted by SH|-Ninja Ugh the problem is the damn nerf feast they call "balance"
More than any other MMORPG, I feel that Mythic has done the best job at class balance with DAoC. In fact, I can easily say that DAoC is the most polished MMORPG to date. Does that make DAoC the best? Absolutely not.
I was there since launch and I've seen every single patch that has ever come out so I know about some of those "nerfs". 99% of the time they were fixes to genuine bugs that had made a class/power behave in a manner that was not intended. Obviously, I would not classify that as a nerf (although powerlevelers and those with no patience or understanding would argue otherwise).
Sure, you can talk about that change to the damage shield spell lines last fall but that was desperately needed to curb the power-leveling and bring the tanking classes back into the their respective roles - absorbing damage for their groups - rather than letting a pet do all the work for very little risk.
I have always believed that MMORPGs bring out the most vociferous, argumentative and intolerant players than any other game genre. It's not necessarily a bad thing since it stimulates interesting converstaions but, quite frankly, my eyes glaze over the minute I see a post with teh word "nerf" in it. I guess I'm getting crankly in my dotage
With all the keep-oriented RvR, tanks are completely useless. All they do is use siege weapons, clicking one button over and over and over again. Scouts are clearly the most over-powered characters in the game, because all they need to do is sit at the top of a tower or keep, and because their range greatly exceeds that of other archers, they can annihalate any caster in 2-3 hits from a very long distance.
Originally posted by Blackstick Currently, the classes are VERY unbalanced. With all the keep-oriented RvR, tanks are completely useless. Not balanced at all if you ask me. =/
Just because Class X can do something that Class Y cannot does not indicate a lack of balance. If you look at it more like a rock, paper, scissors concept then it all makes a little more sense.
To directly address the tank comment, they are still useful for keeping guards and defending characters at bay while protecting that siege equipment. They are still useful all the way to the top of the tower, figuratively speaking of course.
Every class has a niche so it's just as matter of everyone understanding that niche. A person who only worries about what his class cannot do and what every other class can do will always be dissapointed. Someone who understands the role of their class and how to capitalize on the strangths and weaknesses of not only their class but others' as well will have a much more enjoyable experience. I've seen this too many times in too many games to not firmly believe this.
Of course, truly gimped classes are another matter entirely to be saved for antoher thread perhaps.
So far I agree, Mythic did a good job of balancing the classes, they're still not perfect tho.
I tryed alot of betas of alot of game and so far DAoC is the best, and im not looking too much forward to WoW nor EQ2 since the PvP will most likely sux. This is an assumption.
No, I think the problem started with /level. Ruined every BG except thid, and its hard as hell to level anything now since no one around to group with, and of course ToA without a doubt. At first I liked NF everyday though I spend less time online and more time wondering what to play. Tanks are rendered useless now. They can only be guardbots, hybrids are SoL(blademasters, merc, Berserker).
Maybe I'm not talking so much about balance as I am about how fun it is to play certain classes. But then again, it IS unbalanced if some classes can do absolutely nothing against ANY class. Tanks are useless.
First of all running siege equipment is doable by ANYONE.
Second of all, ANYONE can play a tank now. ALl you need to learn is how to BG someone, /stick, and /afk. That's not balanced, or fun. Tanks don't need to worry about their specs anymore, or their weapons, or artifacts (which makes it even worse for those that spent countless hours of ToA PvEing to deck out their characters). An unspecced, unSCed, non-ToAd tank is just as effective as a fully pimped out one. That's not balanced at all.
Well, the only toon I played to 50 was my Hero so forgive me if I sound a little biased
I think perhaps you are simplifying the role of a Hero a bit too much. A L50 Hero with several RA's and solid SC gear is significantly more productive than a vanilla L50 Hero. You're not trying to tell me that a Hero with Ignore Pain cannot perform better in a fight than one without, are you? Or that perhaps a L50 Hero with SC gear that procs a self-heal or a DD every now and then no better than a guy with just normal crafted armor, are you?
Seriously, I know where you are coming from in that the Hero's role sounds a little boring to some people. But to folks like me, we enjoy having the responsibility of protecting our group mates from physical damage. Having my big shield up and taking hits for a vital member of the group (e.g. healer) makes my job just as welcome as the next guy's.
However, you will never be able to convince me that some classes can do absolutely nothing against any class. The hue and outcry over that gaming mechanic would have been long and loud and Mythic would have addressed it (or at least attempted to). I believe that this is simply a matter of someone not playing to their own strengths.
Despite some of the limitations of my chosen class and some of the boring, repetitious game play, I still enjoyed my Hero the most out of any alts that I ever rolled up. To me, this has nothing to do with balance and everything to do with playing to your own strengths and, more importantly, playing what you think is fun.
*applause*
In two years of playing DAoC on and off, I haven't even got past the first grind. Which is why I am cancelling my subscription right now, NF was good while it lasted but the lowbie battlegrounds are dying quickly. I hope AC2 can keep me satisfied and the PvP will be decent.

imfurious, if you can enjoy your hero post-NF, I applaud you. It's great that there are still people who have hope for the expansion.
Nonetheless I still think that if you're not using your STYLES that define your class, it's a dead class. And tanks that don't have serious ranged spells will rarely use those styles in keep sieges (which is sadly, 99% of what NF is about).
So it's good that you still enjoy playing your Hero, but very few people do.
As much as i hate to say it since im gonna get flamed, but you guys are nothing but whiners.
my response.
1. Even though you have to do too much and get a lot of items i feel thats what gives it the fun, sure it has a hard grind for em and it takes a long time beofr eyou really become "all that". but the fact is I DONT WANT A FUCKING GAME WHERE ANYONE CAN OWN WITHOUT ACTUALLY HAVING TO DO ANY WORK. it gives me something to do. If i had the game and i got to level 50 and i never had to do anything but rvr i never had to hunt new items, and i never had to do any grind (god forbid i have to actually work to get anyway) id get bored fast. People complain that its too item based. Of course its item based, its a mmorpg, you have to actually get the l337 items to be effective, but does that make it TOO UNFAIR, noooooooooooooot really sure it can be bad without them, but you can get them too, and then your good.
2. Okay god forbid that in a war situation that you dont just run around in a field like a crazy madmen, sure zergs and stuff can be a pain but the fact is that it gives it more of a realistic feel, because in a actual war it IS about the keeps it IS about the castles. and tanks being useless in RvR? sure but what else are they gonna do run up to the castle and smash it with their fists? pffft some realism there.
MY SUGGESTION for all the whiners is that they make a server where every class doesnt get any skills you dont get any items, and your on a flat plain with no scenery and you just run at each with your fists, oh and they change all the stats on the races so they are all the exact same. That way there is no grind, you can run around like a idiot and attack people, and you never have to do anything.

That is why you need Guild Wars, PvP victory is based on the players skill, not level/items.
Guild Wars
With NF out, I think I just might migrate to CoH, Guild Wars, or WoW. =P
