Yesterday was Ryzom's third birthday

macpetemacpete Member UncommonPosts: 64

It seems that no one has still posted a comment about the third anniversary ...

GF has been a bit too silent lately but  the community is alive and kicking as ever and the game masters have done a great job yesterday, so ...

happy birthday Ryzom!

I've just started playing so I'm very happy to see that the community still love this game.

I only Hope things will go better.

    Me too :(

I wasn't at home yesterday ... I've logged in only for a few minutes but it was late (my wife was awaiting me). Silan was almost empty. I've seen daestny and a small group of players that were playing  trivia.

Too bad this important anniversary has been celebrated only by the GMs and not by GF :(

Gilgameesh was in Almati Wood all the time, unfortunately the human giving life to the homin was almost always afk due to real life stuff.

Got the time to see some fireworks and cheer at some friend, tho

Thank you CSR and Happy Birthday, Ryzom.

Any time I was able to go near my keyboard I captured a screenie:

Anyone want to start the pool on whether Ryzom sees a fourth birthday?

Me being me says it barely makes it past the New Year.

The contract they signed with the courts had to guarantee one year's employment for the original crew they inherited from Nevrax. That runs out in mid-December.  It is going to be interesting to see GF try maintain the current high level of content output when the dev team is gone. Good luck GF in keeping Atys alive and kicking in the next year.

    I didn't know ... that's worrying ...

I've just started playing (well, just a few hours, I will be busy for a few days), I've bought the old retail box (very nice packaging) and I've entered the serial so I will be able to play in the mainland untill October the 20. I've followed this game for years without playing it (I was a bit frightened) but now I'm really glad to be here ... I hope everything will go well.

    Ryzom deserves better owners ...

Well, all we can to atm is wait and see, better not fall into stupid speculations again and start Ryzoms Swasns-Song allready.

Last year around this time, as the sale was announced, it started just the same way and well... it´s still here.

IF it goes down, we´ve had one hell of a time, If not,... Yay!

I for myself will not worry myself sleepless, there isn´t much anyone of us could do about it IF it was to close down anyway.

So, I  for myself will just wait and see...

    I think you're right, MaDSaM.

Ryzom seems to me like a brand-new game with lots of fresh gameplay ideas that never get old ... because it has ever lived in a sort of frozen state ... it has still to develop its potential.

It hasn't reached all his potential gamers (they are now playing something else, I suppose). It could be born again one day.

  • GilgameeshGilgameesh Member UncommonPosts: 412

Lol DarkYubo, you are still angry?? Take it easy.

I think there are many scenarios about what GF can do, for sure i can't believe they spent a lot of money for just 'run the game one year and close it after'. It's a stupid statement.

    What i can see is:

    1. GF will just continue with the original team, putting in game the new quests and starting a new life-cycle;

    2. GF will just continue with the original team, with the addition of some new designer/developer;

    3. GF will just continue with a new team;

    4. GF close the game and use the engine (otherwise they had just wasted money, unbelievable) to develop a new game, more lined with the current MMOs. Probably a clone of a clone of the clones of  WoW;

3 out of 4 points are still good and promising.

the 4th point, if it became true, will means just another MMO's flop, as it's not possible to compete with WoW, unless you do something totally different and incredibly innovative. Ryzom already have these qualities, just need something more 'normal' that helps a bit the gameplay. Also need a better UI and some more features not related to the game mechanics (the chat system, in example)

I think GF is not blinded, everyone have seen that, with some advertisement, many people jumped in to try the game.

The game just need new features and a new campaign to get all the players 'tired' of the usual genre, and there are really many around, searching a new home.

If GF will close Ryzom, I will go searching something else, never forgetting all the good time and the great fun i got in Atys for almost 3 years. And all the nice people i met.

Anyway, i will be in game till december for sure. Let's see what happens.

NB: I already experienced a close down of a game in 2003/04 when URU/Prologue was closed due to too many problems after 2 months of an incredible beta experience for me, for the worse of the bugs and the good of being a Myst fan and doing the puzzles with other people. At the end, they are just games.

GF hates spending money - why else would they be using all volunteer GMs? The volunteer CSR purge happened in one of their other games when things were getting abused by the help. Why else would they not bother fixing up the web pages for Ryzom?

So... when the contract ends forcing them to keep paid employees paid I can only think of one thing happening. Volunteer dev team for Ryzom.

  • AstralglideAstralglide Member UncommonPosts: 686

I'm not sure that a volunteer dev team would be all bad. (Not sure where my money would be coing then). I have seen a lot of software/ internet projects that came to fruition based soley on volunteer developers- Winamp or Spybot S&D anyone? If the deveolpers are either volunteer or even get a percentage of the game, then people who LOVE Ryzom will be in charge of development- and we'll all be happy.

    A witty saying proves nothing.

  • GilgameeshGilgameesh Member UncommonPosts: 412

Volunteer dev team? Are you all speaking of the free GNU project? It's not possible at all, imho.

Do you think Gameforce spent a lot of money to get all the asset of Ryzom (code and all trademarks) just to maintain the game for one year and releasing everything as a free GNU project???

They can sure close the game, but they will never release as free software what they have paid so much.

Considering also this possibility, what volunteers devs can really do to improve the game?

URU Live, the first unsuccesfull development, got something on the road when Cyan closed the beta in february 2004. What's happened, when they released the code as free GNU project?

Cyan left opened a free server where people just used it as a special chat room with the 'look&feel' of Myst.

Others opened some unofficlal free server and got minimal development, something as 'fly' mode, if nothing at all.

Who would lead a volunteer team? Who would make the decisions about the lore?

Myst was a special case, due to the nature of the game, but Ryzom is a fully implemented MMORPG, that took years to implement, the graphic, the animations, the music, the models etc, not counting the engines. This is the asset Gamreforce paid for and they will not release any trademark or code. Imho.

Nah - just pissed to see a game like Ryzom die a slow and drawn out death.  It had a lot of potential.

GF seems to have overestimated what it was worth and I have a feeling they will be marking the fiscal year 2007 with a write down for this investment. They were left with no cash to put into the game after the initial purchase it seems. Ryzom suffered for so long from lack of direction from management and that tradtion seems to have continued with the buyout by GF.

  • FikrocFikroc Member Posts: 166

Yeah I started Ryzom and loved it but just hated the fact it felt like it was a dying game. It was a great game but i'd just hate to get a foothold in it and make a bunch of friends just to lose it so was more depressing than fun after a bit. Plus all the people complaining about the OPs. Figured it'd be best just to hang out til WAR to get some good pvp again. (hopefully)

Gilgameesh, you are full of optimism, but this game slowly dying. Its shame, because Ryzom has still potential to be great game, I agree with DarkYubo and Fikroc. Players must make own events, pche? /Run for life/ ....

I'm not optimist, I'm just waiting till december.

I'm still having fun in Ryzom, that's why I'm playing it.

I just can't believe a Company can waste money in this way, that's why i think they will do something. Maybe another game, different from Ryzom or just a revamp. I don't know and I'm not so worried. If Ryzom closes, I will just move to another game.

    You're right, Gilga but ... there's a but.

Ryzom was Nevrax's only product, now it's only one of the GF's stud horses ... that means that a total waste of money, a disastrous failure could have been taken into account  from the very beginning (just think about NC Soft's Auto Assault or Turbine's Asheron's Call 2 ... these games are dead but the companies are still alive).

That said, I'm pretty optimistic because Ryzom is still in its adolescence (I've read that there was an eight years plan in Nevrax designer's mind) and there has to be someone in the industry that is aware of its potential ...  oh, well ... I hope so.

Word is that GF has suspended new subs.

Not a good sign as this is what Nevrax did about a year ago while in bankruptcy hearings.

  • FikrocFikroc Member Posts: 166

Nah that isn't true. I was subscribed as a new player maybe a month or 2 ago... but have cancelled already. >.<

Have you looked at the General English forum on ryzom.com today?

Current subs cannot be renewed after they expire and have been replaced with free time instead.

That also means that players in free trial cannot upgrade to paying customers.

  • FikrocFikroc Member Posts: 166

No but I did realize it was the first mmo i've tried that only kept chars 90 days from the cancel. Looks like leaving before the game gets dropped wasn't an exageration. Whats worse is it could've been a really good game if someone just gave it some dedication. Gameforge really dropped the ball on that one.

  • JasPlunJasPlun Member Posts: 155

Well if it was their 3rd birthday I wish them well I really liked the game just did not see enough population to keep me in it. This game made me feel like I was actually there on another planet it was really awsome feeling it gave. The graphics were some of the best in any mmo to date too bad it never caught on. I can only imagin what that game would feel like with 20k or more players on a server:P Happy Birthday Ryzom hope your around alot longer I may rejoin you someday:P

  • macpetemacpete Member UncommonPosts: 64

There are some troubles with the billing system ...  it will be possible to subscribe again after the weekend (that's semi-official ... from the CSRs).

    Ryzom is free now?

No announcement, no time period, just a single billing event on my account:

    September 28 2007 - ? Free period

What does this all mean? On the german forum people said something like "Wasn't this the same when Nevrax struggled? Free time for all?"

And as I heard it is not possible for trial accs atm to upgrade either.

    Just my 2 cents.

Subscriptions for full Ryzom accounts are temporarily disabled.

I cancelled my account 2 weeks ago in a huff..... they are currently active (6 month sub), but... i can NOT resubscribe.....

    Interesting......

    EDIT:

Well that will teach me to have huffs

Gameforge; when you ready let me know... i would like to give you £87 for my two x 6 months subs... OR can you let me know if my accounts (main one expires in days), can still login???

    Thanks

Does that mean we'll never see The Corrupted Moors?

And as far as I know, roughly 1/4th of the playerbase already knows about the existance of TCM and all that other stuff that never got released.

According to In Game CSRs, this is just only a minor glitch in the billing system (for the weekend). Not that I would expect them to state anything else, but that's their definite answer.
