Many MMOGs now have integrated voice chat, such as EVE, Lord of the Rings Online, World of Warcraft (new patch), and Dungeons & Dragons Online. Thus, one could say it is becoming a feature expected of top titles since voice chat has many benefits in cooperative online play.
Personally, I think WAR should include integrated voice chat, as it is so handy and removes the pain of dealing with external servers, especially in PUGs. Besides, it is becoming one of those things that premiere games offer, so to not have it would make the game seem a little less legitimate. I am certainly not claiming voice chat makes or breaks WAR, because it does not, but it is a nice feature I think a lot of the community expects of new AAA titles.
I know a lot of people dislike integrated voice chat because they then feel forced to use it, and often are shy or otherwise dislike it or cannot use it, and then feel isolated or unwanted. I suppose that is a valid concern, but I think it is still a weak reason for not including it.
Oh, and I would be willing to kick in an extra dollar or so per month (maybe have packages for savings), as an optional fee, for it. Voice chat does require major server resources at the least, and quite often completely dedicated servers. So, I would not feel screwed if I had to pony up some dough for this "premium" service. It saves me the money I would spend running my guild's private Ventrilo servers and force them to shoulder some financial burden for once.
So, what do you think about integrated voice chat in WAR?
Comments
I voted yes and it should be free. Why? If Lord of the Rings Online can pony up to give integrated voice chat WAR should definitely be able to.
~~Internet gaming is not for the faint of heart or the dumb of mind.~~
I think that a VOIP system would be a very nice addition to WAR as RvRing against very skilled and competent players will require as much concentration, teamwork, and coordination as downing raid bosses. The system could prove most useful in PUG scenarios, as not everyone will have Ventrilo or Teamspeak, and even if they did spamming the server info and connecting every few minutes wouldn't really be viable. Also as the OP mentioned, its becoming an industry standard slowly but surely, but on the other hand I dont think if it's not included at launch it will be a game-breaker or nullify it's status of a next-gen mmo.
I chose "I simply do not care" because I can play either way. If people want me to use voice chat I can, if not that's fine as well. I preferably wouldn't use one but it isn't that great an issue here. After being a veteran to Xbox Live you can tolerate anything. I wouldn't think an extended charge for this service should be added though. If it's added with no additional cost it's perfectly fine.
how well did it work out for WoW, LOTRO?
Personally I use ventrillo to do most of my communication, just seems more natural for me. How well is the quality of intergrated voice chat?
I have never used WoW's since it just came out a short while ago, and I quit playing nearly a year ago. However, I used LotRO's and found it worked all right. You obviously do not get the same control as you would with your own Ventrilo server, but since it is free it suffices. It is easy to find some random people to group with and fire it up without exchanging server addresses, passwords, etc.
I do seem to recall some people saying that voice integration in LotRO was very flawed due to how the servers were set up, but exactly why escapes me now. At any rate, I did not play enough to experience this.
I voted no. I feel it compromises the authenticity of the game. Hearing a little kids voice on the other end of a fierce brutal warrior just doesn't seem right to me. Nontheless I'm sure vent and other outside sources would be used anyways.
If they include it free of charge why not? If they want to charge more for it then there are other options people can use for voice chat so it really doesn't matter either way. I personally don't use voice chat because I like to role play and hearing someones real voice ruins that.

Remember man that passes by,
as you are now so once was I.
And as I am so must you be,
prepare yourself to follow me.
I put no but in a way I really don't care. However, I am curious to how a couple people say it is great for PUGs and no need to exchange any information. Who wants to voice with PUGs? That has always been my thing. I will still be on Vent with my guild and not switching up to just do a PUG.
Voice chat is useful, but I can understand why some people wouldn't like it.
Whenever I use vent I always forget my mic is on and end up saying embarrassing shit LOL
like this poor kid
plus people always get weird when there's a girl in the channel heh heh

Depends , on WoW the sound quality is really shitty IMO , and it can be pretty lag , though , it's fact that it's a must for organized teamplay and so on.
That was great Dee! I've never heard that before haha. Poor kid, I sort of sympathize with him even though he's a whiner. It sounded like he was still active being a LaCrosse player and all unlike being totally dominated by the mmog. His behaviour though lol classic.
Any one knows this (Epic pvp action whit random): Despel wwwwwwwwwwwwww eeeeeeeeeeeddddddddd134 <you die>
In game voce chat just makes things easier.
And ofc it should be free I know there not a lot of people willing to pay for it Infect the people who are willing to pay for it do properly have TS/vent which are better then most in game voce chat programs. Face it in game voce chat will mostly be used when you are whit random’s. However I wood pay more for a game (one time) if it had a mic coming whit it(I have one athome), But just to saves me the trouble of giving IP ore waiting 15 minutes for some one to install config TS/vent.
Btw voce chat will properly not work when only 50 % are able to use voce chat, then you still end up typing which bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnggggggggsssssssssss you back tttttttttttttttttttttttttttto this
(which can be funny to see ;P)
I don't use Ts, Vent or ingame voice chats. But today there are already some MMOs with integrated voice chat (and wow already showed, how to copy this), so it will be a normal feature for future MMOs.
DAD: turn it off, turn the huh, hardrive off.
Even though I can see your reasons concerning voice-chat, you should remember, that it has a lot of drawbacks for both company and player to have voice-chat offered in the package.
I'll start by saying, that I and several friends sometimes play test-server on WoW and the implementation of the VOIP was and still is a bumpy one. According to us, the voice chat was extremely bad, laggy and often completely malfunctioning. Why Blizzard still pushed it to public, I don't know.
Now a couple points on why exactly it's a bad thing.
First of all, you have no control over the quality and trust me, that quality will be low. Games promote themselves to be allround and be playable on even the most crappy internet connection. Hence, the settings of VOIP simply cannot be raised past a certain point, in which you get the difference between LOW Teamspeak and HIGH Ventrilo. A couple milion miles difference.
Second, The impact on the stability of the servers. As we all know, WoW servers are known to be a bit unstable. Some servers drew a long straw, but I think most drew the short one. I've personally played Darksorrow PvP (Europe) and I've had several weeks followed by randoms days, where I litterally lagged so much, that I was incapable of raiding. And being one of the two maintanks in the guild, that's quite frustrating. Especially if the other one has the same problem.
Now what will happen , when they set up VOIP with game-launch ? They will have to focuss their attention over aproximately 20% more servers and it will bring the stability at risk
Third, these voice-servers are located in the same space/region as the game-servers. Now you could say, I can PLAY with my 52K modem, so why wouldn't I be able to SPEAK ? Well, you probably could, you'll just miss out on 50% of the conversation and the part you'll be hearing, was said a couple minutes ago. This destroys pure swift communication and will obliterate any unity in the guilds actions during large-scale raids/pvp/rvr.
Guild are often focussed in regions. If you're located in Europe, you have your server somewhere in Europe, but if you have your server closer to home, Let's say, I'm part of a UK|Euro Guild and I'm Dutch myself, so my connection is perhaps only 20ms to that server in the UK, I'll safe bandwidth to play the game.
I'm strongly in favor of simply setting up or hiring your own server. Not to mention there are buttloads of free and open TS servers all around the world.
It's flexible ( aka, you can change codecs that do not destroy MAC VOIP ( I dont like MAC, but even they want to speak)), you can change the quality, you can manage every little thing about it.
You can use it for other things, besides the game you have a guild in. I often used my ex-Ventrilo with a bunch of people to do other games as well and it's a lot more fun doing it over vent, than having to type stuff out all the time.
The only drawback, is that someone might end up paying a bit of money for it.
(and those that get weird when there's a girl in the channel..grow up.)
VOIP will make that so much worse, my girlfriend is disgusted with LoTRO due to how she is treated because of voice chat. She eventually turned it off and said she lost her mic.
I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad, The dreams in which I'm dieing are the best I've ever had.
It's not the medium that makes it worse, it's the person behind it.
I said no.
Simply because if I want to socialize I'll go out and hang with my friends not the people in game.
I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self.

The discussion isn't whether you want to be an egotistical selfrighteous bastard ingame, it's about whether you'd prefer one over the other if you dó want to talk to people.
or..if you dónt want to become the guy that calls everyone else nerds but plays 24/7 himself!! ..zjezs.
Yes.
BTW has anyone noticed alot fewer trans-gendered players in LOTRO and DDO? And WAAAAAAAY more ACTUAL females play than I thought!
haha I think the best part is the end, "How old is that kid??" hehehe
Currently Playing : WAR, UO, RL
Since the game focuses alot on pvp, voice chat should be included without an additional charge.
ts/ventrillo >> integrated
for example
if u are on a alt u can talk whit your guild
if u get disconnected u lose all contact whit the guild
etc
BestSigEver :P
Btw I voted yes.
Go play Oblivion then. Single player RPG are for those who don't get the concept of a MMO
What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...
