The death of a game, The Saga of Ryzom

Document1Document1 Member Posts: 50

Its always a sad day when you hear about one of your favo games being pulled out, its even sadder to see one company after another play and toss around the game you love. The game in this case is The Saga of Ryzom, just check the official forums on www.ryzom.com and you will see the outcry for a answer to questions floating around more then a year, questions even from before the recent company hosting the game.

Where nevrax failed to market the game in a good way and so failed to make money, all hope from the Ryzom community was focussed on the new gameowner, GameForge, a company from Germany with mainly expertise in browsergames. Some parts of the community pulled up a eyebrow, do they know how to run a MMORPG?

Well sad thing is, obviousily not. Ryzom is at an all time low at this moment. The once praised community of Ryzom is crippeld by the actions (or can we say NO ACTION AT ALL) from GameForge. If they proved one thing, then it is that they dont know how to run a MMORPG. First and basic rule (imho) is communication with your players, the one still willing to pay for a half finished never got the chance to shine his real light type of game. We all played half finished products, we all complained about them. Only thing is Ryzom is truely different from all those other ones.

It has a real deep and interesting lore, its sandbox in a way even lvlbased heads could cope with it, it had (and still has) the greatest and most mature community from any MMORPG and most important: Ryzom really is a gem untouched by most of you out there. It really makes me sad that i am getting ur interest for this game only by putting death in my TT. This game has the depth (lorewise and craftwise) you ALL are looking for, ok it could be you just dont like the game, but if you tried it once you will agree about those points.

So whats all the drama about, you might be asking yourself.... well since last week billing for Ryzom has ended and everyone has gotten free time.... whoohooo good you would say.... but no, it isnt good... GameForge showed once more how incompetent they are in handling MMORPG's, no1 till this date knows anything about how, what, why and where...

If they dont get their act together Ryzom will die and when that happens i will cry a little inside, Atys i still love you   I stopped playing around May this year myself but i always thought i would return....

threads like this makes me real sad, a small selection of posts made bypeople still playing and trying to get an answer to wheter or not this game is making any progress, any contentupdate or bugfixes after 3 years....

GameForge get your act together!

Sorry for the long read, hope it makes sense and if anyone from Ryzom wonders who i am.... I am Mokdarion and im sure some1 will remember me.

Peace out.

Thats to bad, sorry to hear that for all the Ryzom players.

This game was everything MMO players claimed to have wanted but it just never quite got it together.

Anyway, don't give up hope yet, something might work out...you never know.

Sorry to hear that Ryzom may be closing. I admit it wasn't my cup of tea but I also play a game that is 'different', DDO, so my commiserations.

You must not leave until you free Arlos and have gathered your party safely in this hallway.

I dont want to be mean to anyone. But Euro companies cant run game companies worth anything. Partly its not thier fault , even in 2007 some Euro companies are lucky to get space at Office Deport 3.99 wall. The whole North American system for games is fried , read the rant by Robert o Sirtech , prehaps the greatest Canadian / North American designer in the 80s and early 90s.

So much is stacked against marketing mmorpgs in US , Canada and other places.

At some point you just give up the fight , lack of action from a Euro company means they got a raw normally , sometimes it a developer who doesnt want to update or update the content as directed or its the payment system + crappy vat system.

The Saga of Ryzom community was good to me , I stayed 4 months , until I got 2 double charges , no response from the billing company. It worked out got the charges fix but during that time I found another game moved. It saddens me , that community was maybe the greatest in mmorpg history.

Ryzom , probably one of the best MMOs ever attempted - unfortunately , only half way implemented , and left at that.

It is truly sad to see it go.

    Although

There was an initiative to buy Ryzom and make it free open source game.

Maybe this initiative could be rekindled ?

Or somebody decides to run Ryzom for free? They did this for Archlord , so why not Ryzom ?

Perhaps not all is lost ?

Personally, I do fear they are going to shut Ryzom down. Since taking over, Gameforge has not even added Ryzom to it's list of games on their own company wepsite. They have even made the ludicrous statement that in a few years, game clients will be extinct and all games will be web-based. I wouldn't be surprised if they turned Ryzom into another of their luke-warm browser games.

Ah, well. Sorry to see ya go, Ryzom. It was a fun ride, but it had to end someday, I guess.

So far, this is the only "official" response I've found on the Ryzom forums: forums.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php

Re: Feedback - Better [Any] Communication

The feedback forum only allows game officials to make threads - its normal.

As for the current situation, if we were able to tell you (ie had the information to give you) more than you've already been told - we would be telling you.

I'm afraid right now all I can say is the following:

    1) We expect Marjo to make an official announcement tomorrow (That's not a "promise" - just an intention). You won't get anything "official" before then and rumour-milling doesn't help anyone.

    2) We don't know what's wrong with the servers that is making them "lag".

    3) If Aniro or any of the other servers are "closed" then its because they crashed or because a CSR on that server closed it due to the lag. We currently have no intention of doing the same to Arispotle.

I'm really sorry I can't give you better news but unfortunately that's the way it is.

Thanks to everyone for staying relatively calm,

Best guess is someone decided it was a more suitable topic for the Ryzom forum. Seems a bit over eager to move it just because of that but maybe it wouldn't have been if there was offical news about what is happening? Ah well, whatever the reason it's a pity to see Ryzom in trouble like this again. It has a lot of depth and sandbox style mechanics that I love but for some reason they just didn't click together to be fun for me in Ryzom.

I just downloaded this at the weekend. Glad I wasn't too enamoured with it now! I was only on the trial isle though.

    It's over.

Hello, as much as I'd have preferred to speak about some upcoming projects, I bring you today news about the financial state of the game you're all so passionate about.

Ryzom is going to pass through a few uncertain days/weeks, a second time. Our efforts to move Ryzom forward didn't get the expected repercussions and today as I speak, while the game continues to run and to be supported, the company behind its development - Gameforge France SARL, located in Paris - is lacking the funds to keep going. For those who've known the Nevrax times and went through the transitory period in last December, the same legal procedure of "liquidation judiciaire" has been put in place yesterday. This means that while the appointed liquidator will do what it takes to close the company, potential buyers may show up to take over the game Ryzom. If nobody shows up, the servers will be shut down in less than 3 weeks at liquidator's request.

Meanwhile, what is going to change for you? Ryzom is still running and your characters remain. However the game development has been frozen and the billing system and Free Trials are undergoing the following changes:
    • Paying subscribers will not be billed and will be able to continue playing for free.
    • It's not possible to pay to subscribe to a full Ryzom account anymore.
    • You will still be able to create a Free Trial account, but at the moment there will be no possibility to upgrade your account and go to mainland.
    • The level cap on Silan is removed for the Free Trials in the meantime.

These idiots wasted everybody's time, fully knowing they had not one idea what the hell they were doing.

On the up-side, at least everyone got to play for a little while longer after Nevrax failed.

The game has gone into bankruptcy twice in less than 2 years. Noone else will ever pick it up, unless GF has the decency to turn the code over to the fans, which I doubt.

Edit: this may be the first time I can say I would condone a free server.

This is a sad state of affairs.  Ryzome was truly a unique experience.  I had played it for several months and always considered a fully account, but now it seems this will be impossible.

Farewell my friend, you will be sorely missed.

My fondest memories are from my times on Aristoptle, sitting in the bathhouse of Pyr, roleplaying with my fellow Dragonblades (for those who don't know what rp is, NO we were not cybering....).  Hopefully they will find a way to resurrect the title and put some real work into it.  The biggest problem I saw from Gameforges aquisition is that nothing was getting done.  No real updates, no additions or fixes to existing problems.. it seemed as if Ryzom went silent, stagnant when acquired.  But this is from a now 'outsider" looking at the face of Ryzom.

The people that attempted to buy it and release the code as free last time might try again. Apart from that yes I can't see any company going for it.

I just started getting into Ryzom the first part of September (this year). I played EVE for a long time and needed something new.

Now it is as good as gone, just as I was getting into it. I guess I should have paid attention to the last year. I'm glad GameForge kept it running for one more year.

I can't believe that there aren't enough subscribers to keep the servers open at a maintenance level, if necessary simply consolidate the community and keep the game live for crying out loud.

Yea... I have to say I only played for a short time but some of the elements of Ryzom were really unique in the MMO world from what I have seen.  The world really came alive in ways that most worlds do not.  When a storm came up, a storm came up.  The trees swayed violently, there was wind and weather and you knew you were in the middle of a nasty squall.  The animals all had lives instead of just wandering around a bit.  The hyenas would nap at proper times, get up and patrol their hunting grounds, go after and kill their prey.  It was glorious just to watch this stuff.  When winter came on the world changed completely and there would be more hungry wolf packs out scouting for prey just beyond and sometimes across roads.  It was a vibrant living world that had a lot of unrealized potential.

Even though my activity in Ryzom has dwindled over the past few months, and I pretty much left entirely once I returned to Horizons...this morning I've several times been teetering on the edge of tears. Ryzom has been a truly unique and gorgeous gem of a game. I maintain hope that the Free Ryzom Campaign will rescue Ryzom...

It's so sad to see a game with so much potential die in this way.

I hope there is a real company out there that will pick this game up and give it some real development. Anyone have contacts with a real company that can give them a nudge.

It was a blast being part of the great community on Atys and I hope it finds a way to continue.

    Hey Clav :)

it's sad to meet a fellow guildie in a forum as the game seems unplayable now.

If you have the patience, try to log into Sweetmarie ring scenario....

Anyway, nothing to add to your comment, we are just losing a great, unique game.
