And now you know why we have an NDA. Because people take quotes out of context and post them in ways that cause confusion to the uninformed. Sigh. Once of the things that had come out of the beta test so far was that it needed work. We've been doing that, but the changes haven't percolated through to the beta yet, and so the stress test doesn't have them. Avatar combat has been getting a lot of love in the last couple months that *isn't* in the build being used for the stress test. Hence the warning, under NDA, not to expect it to be awesome. Yet.
NDA or no NDA people allready have their thoughts on it good or bad. The game is descent enough I gave the stress test a shot, but it needs a ton of work, more then this so called 2month old build. If the devs didn't want such information getting out, they should have never held this stress test. Plain and simple as that.

So, the delay from last June had less to do with SOE contract negotiations/marketing, and more to do with needing 7 more months of testing and polish?
Strange how different it sounds now, compared to last March, April, and May.

No, the decision to delay had *everything* to do with the contract negotiations and trying to get sim ship with Europe. It's just that once we'd gone down that route we found out we weren't quite as close to ship as we'd thought. Kind of like buffing and polishing that marble statue and having the arm fall off. Crap. Didn't see that flaw in the stone. In our case we said: Avatar Combat is kind of sucky compared to Ship Combat. This set of missions really could use a rewrite. Well, we've got the time to fix it now before we ship instead of after, lets get to work.
It's less a case of being intentionally deceptive than of being self deluded But the doctor prescribed several extra months of hard work and we're feeling much better now!
Im really looking forward to PotBS and am glad to have and indication of when its due to be released.
From everything that I have seen and heard it wont be too far off that date... if at all. Tbh i dont mind either way. I for one will exercise my patience not because i have to, but because i want to.
Im excited about this game and when it is released im going to playit!! :-)
Its not hard to stay tuned to the current state of the game thanks to the FLS dev team and community forums.
It doesn't seem out of the realm of realism to see them getting ready for summer launch and then hitting the contract stall and deciding to revisit some issues or systems that had previously been determined good to go. If you have more time you use it, plain and simple if you ask me.
FLS has a good development team, DEVELOPMENT being the operative word. They have a solid core game and are building on that, this is not going to be your normal cookie cutter MMO with all flash and no substance.

Yep, nice logic.
I think the income treshold from start was pretty fair.

But, I also seem to recall a lot of devlogs and dev posts describing how, during this "marketing and distribution" wait, the team was being VERY selective about adding NEW features to the game in time for release. This, again, was back in June or July. So, are we saying that, even while adding new features at that time(which was the first release date), you didn't know the game was buggy/broken/unfun? What was going on during the beta testing in Feb/March/April/May that this was missed?
And, if the contract was signed on time, you're saying you would have released a buggy/broken/unfun game, and not even known it?
Seems like an odd admission. Anyway, just for clarity, I would never claim outright dishonesty unless I had some proof to back it up....and I don't here, so I did not, and will not, claim that. I try to be fair and balanced, and hope I am still being that here.
(The rest constitutes some personal rambling, and can probably be ignored by most...I'm just distracting myself while I try to get my newborn to take a nap.)
I am of the opinion, and it's one-hundred percent a personal opinion, that FLS gets a lot of credit for being more "open and honest" than other mmo companies, and being one of the "brighter" companies on the scene. Yet, as exampled above, you have a second delay of half a year that gets seemingly two explainations, but no one really calls anyone out on it. One explaination is "the games good to go, we just can't market it". With that, you get credit for being bright, since it was ready on time, and get a pass on giving out a false release month. But, then, you get another explaination, which is "we really meant we weren't ready and didn't know it cause we're new". So, you again get credit for being "open and honest", now, but get a pass on not being able to get the game ready on time.
So, where's the critique? Why all the passes? All my dealings with the FLS folks caused me to like them as well...but, this isn't a party folks. So many other games/companies get no real wiggle room, yet, it seems, this company can say two things on the same topic, and get credit from everyone. What gives?
Less a question of "buggy/broken/unfun" than "not as good as we'd like". Could we have shipped in June? Yep. Would the game be as good? Nope. Would it have been buggy and broken? Nope. Would it have been *less* fun? Yep. Different than unfun though.
But we knew we weren't going to make June a good while back and were already planning for a later date. We were careful, however, not to announce a new date until we had a better understanding of the scope of what we were going to redo and fix. That's why you didn't hear a new release date from us for a long time after we knew we weren't making June. The deal with Sony was in the works, and we didn't know how long a slip that might push us into.
At that point we were looking at our missions, and while the newbie missions were servicable they weren't as good as we'd like. We were really hoping for more than the "Kill x foo's" of SWG, or the flavorless text of so many MMO's. The newbie content was the first done, and we intended to come back and redo it with the lessons learned from doing the rest. We could certainly have shipped with them and fixed them later, it's what a lot of companies do. The CoH/CoV missions got much better in the later patches than the ones they shipped with. The slip allowed us to do a lot of that work before we shipped though.
And we were looking at our Avatar Combat. While it was OK, it wasn't as fun as we'd like. As has been discussed elsewhere, it was the last system to go in and hadn't had as much iteration as ship combat. John's "squeeze the suck out of it" was certainly quotable, but also a bit exaggerated. We made a lot of decisions about when we'd lock down changes based on the later shipdate that would have been different if we'd said October or if we'd stuck with June.
Not that I'm claiming brilliance or omniscience on our part, though. We certainly have made and will continue to make screwups. This is our first MMO, and while we've got lots of staff who've worked on other ones, getting the first one done is always an unpredictable adventure . But one reason why we get cut some slack is that we're usually willing to admit it, unlike most companies out there. The fact is that *everyone* screws up, most companies just hide it from you a lot more than we do. Whether that makes us honest or incompetent you can decide after we ship and look at what we've claimed is "done."

Simple reason - to date they haven't taken anything from me and failed to deliver. Or even promised to deliver something and failed. Delays happen, but honest commentary about such things is understandable. And while I like companies that do hat they say when they say they will do it the reality is I have yet to spend a single dollar with FLS so they are really not beholden to me for anything, but despite that they govern themselves in a way that holds themselves accountable tot he community. That is why they get 'slack'.
As for the game - I don't expect PotBS to ship in a perfect condition as the greatest game ever made. Perhaps it will but i more expect it to ship and work as they have described over these years, I expect it to have a solid core gameplay that I find appealing, and I expect that a team obviously dedicated to the community and to their work will be continually improving the game over time. I suppose I don't think of the game as a the big home run hitter who often strikes out so much as the consistent hitter than gets on base and can drive in a run when needed. The first might be flashy and make for good Sportscenter highlights but the later is what championships are made of.

Eh an opinion like most that have on these forums, I have my reasons and think that release date is way to early, but alas as time goes on I might give it a try at this point, but in no way will I pre-order or play on first day open. I was (if others remember) very "not going to even happen" thou after some things I have **** , this title has real good promise but no way will it be "ready" by Jan. Don't take me wrong, I am sure you can play it and actually enjoy it, but it is far from complete.
Do you have some insider information that leads you to believe this? Know someone in the closed Beta? Cause from everything I've heard it was pretty much ready to go for their scheduled July release and all this has done is allow them to go back and polish it up.
Just my opinion on it (as nothing more can be said, nice try) , heck I was one to think this was going to the dumpster of the MMO gods, but alas I was wrong and I just think the date is to early. SO IE> won't buy till after a few months and hear what has happened etc.
you will be jealous of my parrot

@The Dev guy Any real reason it is releasing after Christmas? It seems silly to be missing the Christmas time by 12 days (12-25 to 1-7)??
Christmas is a trap. Game retailers have limited shelf space for the 12357890123854 games coming out at Christmas. They're going to prefer single player games over online games, and they're going to prefer console titles over PC titles. So you get a smaller initial order from the retailer, because they know they're not going to give you much shelf space. And smaller initial orders means smaller reorders, and less exposure, and lower box sales.
By targeting post-Christmas, we get more copies on shelves, and we're not competing with the massive Sony vs. Microsoft vs. Nintendo Christmas Console War. By having preorders on shelves pre-Christmas, we still get the ability to sell as a 'Christmas present' for enthusiastic folks.
And thus the plot for world domination continues to unfold.
A parrot on every shoulder, and a patch on every eye!
err... well. Not every eye. Maybe just 1 eye on every head. So, like a patch on every head... But that doesn't sound right, ya know? I mean if you're going to say that everyone needs an eyepatch, it's doesn't flow very well if you say, "... on every head!"
I mean, some people could think that the patch could be anywhere on the head, like it's a medical patch or something. Which isn't very piratey. I guess wounds are piratey. Like scars and stuff. But the eyepatch thing is what I was going for. And it's not like I could say, "... and an eyepatch on every eye!" That seems a bit redundant. Too many "eyes"... I'm gonna watch scrubs now.
@The Dev guy Any real reason it is releasing after Christmas? It seems silly to be missing the Christmas time by 12 days (12-25 to 1-7)??
Easy - and it has been said a number of times - simultaneous Euro and US release is important to FLS.
Europe is a bit more time consuming to get the details all work out and thus the delay. think about it, to be ready for Dec 15 launch the early start would be Dec 1 and the expanded BETA in November which leaves little time for infrastructure stuff such as they are doing now, like the recent stress test.
OK, so no. Or the answer might be that FLS doesn't think a pre-Christmas release is all that important (which is a fine stance to take).
I laugh at you for saying it leaves little time when the game has been in development for 4+ years.
The real answer seems to be that FLS is not very efficient (or perhaps comepletely overwhelmed), which is fine because they are a small dev team. But to blame a simultaneous release for a 12 day delay is ludicrous. Especially since the simultaneous release has been being worked on for at least 5 months already probably longer.
FLS has been in way over their heads on this project. I hope it works out for them, because the game looks great, but your excuses are comical.

Good answer...and a fair point
Do you have some insider information that leads you to believe this? Know someone in the closed Beta? Cause from everything I've heard it was pretty much ready to go for their scheduled July release and all this has done is allow them to go back and polish it up.
Just my opinion on it (as nothing more can be said, nice try) , heck I was one to think this was going to the dumpster of the MMO gods, but alas I was wrong and I just think the date is to early. SO IE> won't buy till after a few months and hear what has happened etc.
you will be jealous of my parrot
mmmm yeeeah, thats greeat, a little to the left would be greeeat, ::sips coffee mug:::
@The Dev guy
Any real reason it is releasing after Christmas? It seems silly to be missing the Christmas time by 12 days (12-25 to 1-7)??
Look at it this way: if there's to be an Open Beta, it would probably be smack in the middle of holidays and people have time to try it out

Playing: Final Fantasy Online: ARR, Destiny
Most memorable games for me: UO, GW1, LoTRO
