To what extent is this game an MMORPG? Is there a server world like in the monthly pay ones such as World of Warcraft? Is it broken into zones that compile a world like Everquest? Or is it a series of identical tiny worlds filled with upwards of 8 people like Diablo 2? Does anyone know?

not anotherone... PLEASE
looks like the 1st sticky (for me to ignore) will be the "is this really an mmo?" thread.
For the record, tell me why this shouldn't be on here, but Guild Wars should.
It's an MMO as much as Guild Wars, DDO, Dungeon Runners, and Age of Conan are.
'Nuff said.

Not an MMO. Too much instancing. Both Hellgate and Guild Wars are not MMOGs.
Nuff said.

Looks like a MMORPG / MMOG to me.
Can people who think its an MMO please give a better reason then its online, its massive, and its multiplayers. And people who dont think its an MMO please say why. This have an actualy debate and please keep it clean.
I dont feel like posting what i think again, read my other posts.
if it wasnt an mmo it wouldnt be listed
get over it
why do u care
lastly stfu w/ these threads that dont even deserve proper punctuation or debate
It's massively multiplayer. Not massive, multiplayer. As in it has 100's of people in the same place at the same time, I would just squeeze GW onto the list, but HG:L has an offline mode. Making it a RPG with a Hub Based large multiplayer factor. But if it's getting included, it's getting included. I'm not going to try to get them on a judgment call.
I guess we could also base MMO status on how it runs online for the multiplayer...Something like Guildwars and Hellgate would be MMOs b/c the instances are ran server side and not on the group leaders PC such as Neverwinter Nights and Phantasy Star Online, those would be Networked Multiplayer games.
I feel that the word completely describes the requirements for the use of the term.
@ Cathalaode:
its a checklist, get over it ^^.
My question is, why does it matter? Why is there such a need to cause a divide between what's an mmo and what's not an mmo?
Current Games:
This began back when EQ, UO and Diablo were pretty much the only games in town. The seperation was mostly used by EQ players in an attempt to sorta discredit Diablo players.
Back then you could always find threads with EQ players and diablo players exchanging flames because there were not any other games around except for UO, which like diablo had pvp and did not require grouping but had a persistent world like EQ. This made forum board clashes more likely to occur between the battlenet kiddies with the solo friendly diablo and the forced grouping raiders of EQ.
The diablo isn't a mmorpg chant really began as a type of flame in those old forums and has grown into an actual debate which now includes HG:L.
I don't see any need to seperate the games by such a sharp line either. What would you call HG and GW then? If you go to eb games it's a mmo and that's good enough for me.
When i started this thread I was not making the point does hellgate deserve to be called an MMORPG, i just wanted to know what game world I could best relate it to, and gave several examples. I do not care at all what anyone wants to call it, i just want to know if it has a giant world that hundreds of people will share at a given time, or if it will be small player hosted like Diablo 2. If its a world, how pieced is it, and how instanced are those pieces (NOTHING TO DO WITH NAMING) just how does it play.
How often would we get updates for paying monthly fee. Because I dont understand why not keep it free like guild wars and get expansions. If I have to pay 10 dollars a month I expect some good content updates every month.
Trust me on this, I would love to tell you all about it.
Current Games:
isn't the content available to everyone but certain features like banks, and certain items, whatever would be limited to paid accts? I think I read that in an old interview, or preview. If i could remember the magazine or link I would post it.
When it comes to anything paid, I agree, I expect a certain level of support.
Current Games:
I have this question. Is it possible for me to buy HG:L, playing it solo without going online till I get the hang of the game. If I like the game, and if the online community feels happy, and if the added contents do come, if ...
Then I register my game and join the paid online community. Can I do that?

So please tell me again why people who say it includes all these things need a difference reason to state it as such?
hellgate london can also be played offline as far as i know. so its more a role playing game like gothic3 with an extended online-mode. the developers give much attention to online-content and a guild-system should be included in the future. so its not just a standard-online-mode of a game like many console games do have. at the same moment hellgate london isnt a pure mmog, because all missions are instanced and you also can play the game if the servers are down. so its not a constaint client-server game.
maybe im wrong, maybe not, thats all i know about hgl
Yea you can...
I hated the paying model until I stopped to think about it.
When you pay 1 subscription you get all the new content released so far, no matter how long ago the game actually released.
An equivalent would be if someone bought Guild Wars now and by paying 1 monthly subscription got all the expansions released until now.
Another cool thing is that even if you stop paying your subscription (for whatever reason, you forgot, don't have the money, wanted a break), you can still play the game although in a limited fashion using basic out-of-the-box features (which do include full MMO functionality) - so you can at least drop into the game world and say hello to your elite guildmates and do some basic adventuring with them for example.
And finally, even if you are not paying subscription and are without internet access you can still play the game single player.
This really does sound to me as having more choice as a customer on how much time and money I want to spend on the game.
(and besides, you can play it as a MMO without paying subscription - but you get access only to original game zones and items and cannot participate in larger group PvP)
Would you say DDO is not an MMO either then?
"Because it's easier to nitpick something than to be constructive." -roach5000
And no, DDO is not really an MMO either. www.mmorpg.com will put pretty much any game on their website that can even "sort of" call itself an mmo, due to revenue. What do you think, they put this website here for free? Some dude has a lot of time on his hands and he does this all for free? No, its to make money.
Do the same stuff at later levels as the first ten minutes? Check.
Best enjoyed if you are a loot whore? Check.
Players will be nerfed after 6 months for rebalancing? Check.
An expansion will be released that will undo all the hard work over the last year and a half? Check.
Someone will compare this game to Everquest/World of Warcraft/Hello Kittys Island Adventures? Check.
Youtube will have hundreds of "IPWNYOU" moments, raid videos usually with too much text and very dodgy music ? Check.
Players will be bombarded with gold spam? Check.
You will stand around LFG most of the time? Check.
Yes this is an MMOG!
(Tongue firmly in cheek :P)
No annoying animated GIF here!
This is an mmo as much as Diablo 2 was.
and i can't believe you people have the balls to say that guild wars isn't an MMO. It obviously is, since it has the servers has the massive amounts of people. sure, it may not seem like it when you enter the actual combat area, but it still is.
Hellgate london is developed by most of the same people from Blizzard North, for they formed flagship studios. This game is not meant to be an MMO, and i was shocked to see it on this site. What this game is is simply the same thing as Diablo 2, in the respect that there is a solid single player campaign, with the option to go online with it.
Diablo 2 is not an MMORPG, MMO (Massively multiplayer online) was classified as a game with large open areas with thousands of other on-line players or at least capable of doing that.
D2 is a MORPG and guild is a CORPG There still Online RPGs so why not toss it on here? plus they do get paid for having it on there listing.
