After trying the game for 4-5 months i have to say i got completely disapointed. I m not gonna state the reasons why because it will probably result into flames.
But i m genuinly curious as to why 9m people still play this game and what aspect of the game they have fun with.
I would apreciate it if answers like: i play this cause my guild does or i have nothing else to do were left out.
The reasons are obvious, if your guild is fed up with the game just like u, u can all move to a different game which will interest you more, and i m sure u can find plenty of things to do in real life other than playing wow if u really dont like it anymore....
So please answer sincerely if u can, and try to keep the flames at a minimum, i m just trying to satisfy my curiosity
Comments
i liked it because it was very polished and stable...other than that.... *shrug*
couldn't keep my attention that long
it was just...fun
hard to find a reason. have you played thru the warcraft series?
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
I played all three of the single player games and some of the expansions, starcraft as well. I loved them
I was great fan of blizzard before wow came out, now i m sceptical about em, wow really let me down since i had high standards for the company
Get over that hump and join the 9 million currently playing and the millions who have been playing and still playing from day 1.
I did two trial memberships about a year apart and never got into it. My friends kept trying to get me to give it another try so I did. Now, I'm hooked. I've only been playing two months but I do like it a lot. The worst thing about the game is the traveling, it's just so damn slow going from place to place.
You may need to try a different race or class before you find a character you really like. It also helps to be on a good server with helpful people.
It's hard to see how this game could be a let down if you are a fan of blizzard games. They basically just zoomed in on the RTS world. Now you play one of the heroic masses in the world of warcraft. I think that's pretty cool.
I find myself leaving the game every now and then due to boredom or something but, I always come back. I think your statements about how you liked blizzard before WoW and now after WoW (which has super high production value in comparison to MOST mmos) you are skeptical, that makes me skeptical about your comments...
Edit: I play wow because I'm a fan of good mmo's basically. I've tried many stuck with some but, as of now - WoW is the top dog. What's bringing me back again? Well I have some friends that play it and I'm getting tired of City of Villains (I probably wouldn't tire of it if more of my friends played it actually).
Ok, you're not willing to step up to the plate and tell us why you don't like it for fear of being flamed, but you want us to step up to the plate and tell you why we do like it? I guess you're not worried about us getting flamed. LOL. Trust me, there are as many people with venom to spew on those who DO like the game as there are those who will spew venom on those who DON'T like the game.
So if you will step up and tell me what you don't like, I promise not to flame you and I'll give my my humble opinion on whatever is you don't like. I can't speak for the rest of the folks here, you'll have to take your chances with them. Sorry that's how it works.
And really there is already a thread on this topic, which I contributed to. You may find it interesting.
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/150804
And one more thing. I'm assuming that you do like the MMORPG genre and just not this game. Otherwise that's a completely different topic and doesn't belong in the WoW discussion area. If you can't get into WoW and haven't tried any other MMORPG's, it's very possible you just don't like the genre and to ask the people here to explain why they do like it is like asking people why they like chocolate ice cream. They just do.
I like the game because it is easy to pick up and just play. You don't have to act like it is another job like EQ1 was( Only played EQ for 2 months and only got to level 10). Hell I don't even have a level 60 or 70 in WOW yet and i've been playing on and off for almost 2 years now. I will say i get bored sometimes so i just unsub for a month or two, then i get the itch to play again. Plus I play on a few servers which is why i don't have an endgame character yet my 3 highest characters are a level 33 pally a level 46 warrior and a level 51 hunter.
Ok here goes: i didnt like wow cause ....
I m the kind of guy that never likes to xp, therefore i always try to grp up with and spam party with all kinds of random crap just to initiate others to follow so we can have a funny conversation and ease up the boredom of lvling. in wow's case the content was too much soloable and i couldnt find a party that easy even within my own guild.
The community wasnt even close to my standards, too much crying and competition going around to actually make global chat any fun. I know its probably because the servers were full or close to it so there were alot more idiots in each server than u might find in any other game, but still meh.
In every game i play i love to pvp, in wow pvp just didnt feel right. When i kill u, i want u to suffer a little whether that comes from corpse looting/ taking money from u upon death w/e it just makes pvp more fun for me. besides with the honor point system it felt really grindy. And gear really does play a big role.
And finally the end game content is boring. After the 1st guilds started completing raids word came out on how to beat them. even if one member of your guild reads a guide the competition of completing a raid is lost and all u are left with is the grind, as i already said i m not the grind kind of person so raiding lost interest for me fast.
One last thing, i really dont like instanced playing, at all. I never got in GW as well cause of that.
And no it was not my 1st mmorpg, i have been in the gender ever since shadowbane and lineage 2 came out
edit: probably gonna get flamed now
everything you just said is true for me too
been playing too long dont know the reasons y anymore >_>
No flames from me. In fact I totally understand most of your comments. Grouping up and chatting seem to be big with you and that's not really emphasized in WoW. The only comment I'll make is that you can't really blame Blizzard for that except in that they do make the game very soloable. They also however have put in several things to try to make grouping up easy as possible like the looking for group button, the meeting stones and whatnot, whether people choose to use them or not is up to them. The big problem I see however is that grouping up in WoW mostly centers around doing instances and you said you're not interested in instances, so I think that's a key problem for you. So I totally understand you're not liking WoW in that regard.
I've never understood the desire to want to hurt people in PvP. For me, the thrill of the victory is enough, but for many, including you it seems you want the other guy to "feel" it. To make it "hurt" and in WoW it doesn't for the most part. That's a reason I like the game, but a reason you don't. To each his own.
And this is not intended to be a flame, so don't take this the wrong way but your comments about end-game raiding sound rather naive. That's probably because of your self admitted dislike for instances so that's understandable. But if you have done enough raiding you would know that first of all, what works for 1 guild or group, doesn't necessarily work for another. I've seen several cases where my guild tried to make another groups tactic work and it failed miserably and we totally abandoned it and came up with our own tactic that worked much better. Maybe it was just the makeup of the raiding party, I don't really know, but just because you read a tactic and understand it deosn't mean you can pull it off or even that if you did pull it off it, you would end up the with the same results. In most cases it takes several attempts of trying and failing before you realize what it is you are doing wrong and have to make the necessary adjustments to succeed. All that reading the tactics that other use does is give you a starting point as to how to approach things. Then as things either work or not work, you adjust your tactics till you find something that does work. And when it does work, there's plenty to cheer about.
I'm not gonna go into my "likes" of the game here since I already did that elsewhere as I pointed out in my earlier comments. I hope you read that thread and got some insight from some others and I as to what we like about the game. I also sincerely hope that no one flames you. You've made an effort to say what you didn't like without flaming. It would be really nice to see the same returned to you in kind.
I have left WoW a few different times over the past couple years but always go back. The game is easy to play and I can solo when I have the need. Not much of a pvp fan so the pvp element of WoW is a not an issue only game I ever enjoyed pvp on was DAoC. As for raiding I really don't have an opinion as I rarely do it I just loathe it.
Hey Fantaros....no flames from me, I totally understand your comments also. WoW is a joke of a game in all honesty. It's pretty much a grindfest and that's it. I venture to say most people couldnt name ONE thing in WoW you do not have to frind mindlessly for, which makes the game hella boring. The fact to that about 8million of those 9million subscribers are lil kids, makes the game even worse.
Sounds to me like, based on what you said, you like a 18 maybe even 21+ MMO. When you PVP you like to feel there is some kind of threat, etc....sounds to me like you need to try out Eve. Eve totally eliminated the grinding aspect of games, where all skills are realtime based. You can learn them as you see fit and it typically doesnt take any longer than any other MMO to get up to the high stuff. There is no Endgame content persay in eve, because the game is primarily PVP based, though it has some PVE Content. In Eve, when you pvp, If you get blown up, not only do you lose your ship that you spent 100k to 4billion isk on,, you also have the chance of being pod killed by the enemy, in which case if you do not have a up to date clone stored, you can lose skill points as well.
The game is very fun, should check it out, they have a trial, just make sure you go through the Tutorial, because unlike kiddie games like wow, this game actully requires brainpower to play.
You're telling people to leave the game without even being able to give the reasons why you were dissappointed. What other game would you suggest they move to (mmo)? So many people play wow so you know their are 100's of good reasons for them wanting to be there. How bout some reasons why you think they should leave. There's nothing out there right now to rival wow in the mmo department. I think your comments are about 3-8 years premature. I do FPS MP right now because I'm tired of wow and might get into Hellgate. I'd love to dive into some MMO again one day and I hope there's something more interesting then wow expansion by the time that comes out. If not I'll probably be curious enough to re-up my account just to check out the new content. I doubt anything decent will rival wow in a year's time. But yeah I'm not going to go to my friends and go "you need to do something else because I don't like it anymore"--not gonna work.
As far as raids go i never was the leader nor was i interested in becoming one. I just followed the orders i received in vent as to how we should handle the raid.
And the pvp part, i think that mosty came after playing sb for a while. The threat and hurt part only gives u more thrill after the fight is over. It tends to make u a bit paranoid though always looking around the corner to see if some1 is lurking to kill u, but that's all fun in my books
p.s. most of my pvp always ended up with gf tells from both parts, i m not into griefing or ganking but i do enjoy a nice fight even when i m the one that ends up dead. It helps improve your skill after all....
WoW was a lot of fun for me for about two years. I started playing it because I loved Warcraft and thought Blizzard was a great company. Plus, all the other MMO's at the time were getting old or I just plain didn't like them.
I also started playing with 2 other friends, so it was easy to get hooked. We powered through the first 40 levels or so before making new ones and spent a good 6 months just playing the low levels. Finally we got our level 60's and saw what end-game was all about.
PvP was a lot of fun before the battlegrounds came out. When battlegrounds were new, those were a lot of fun too, and I spent a lot of time doing that. It started to get stale after awhile, once it became more of a grind, but it had its hay-day.
Raids have never really been my thing, but they can be fun. I didn't have the patience to wait for 39 other people to get their stuff together so we could do pre-BC raids. I find 25 man raids to be a lot more fun, but its hard to get a good group of people still. If you can get a good group of people, learning new encounters and making new achievements in raids is a lot of fun.
I stopped playing because I didn't have time to dedicate to raids, and the pvp got too stale. Once you've got really good gear, there's not a whole lot else to do besides raid, so I'm taking a break.
I'm thinking about playing again now that I have a much more open schedule and they've made a few changes to the game. I tried looking for an alternative, but I can't seem to find one that is as much fun and is as casual as WoW.
WoW is making you question the company?
Do you not know that WoW is the most profitable game ever made?
Do you not know that it sold more copies and has made more money then any game in the entire industry?
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that it's a bad game. I don't really like WoW either but it would be ignorant to say that WoW isn't the most sucsessfull game that Blizzard has ever made. Startegy games vs MMORPGs are not compareable, so you like strategy games that doesn't make you a critic for mmorpgs. I've played every single mmo ever made and i can tell you that WoW is by far the most polished and user-friendly than any other mmo in the market.
I find it entertaining. When I get bored of one toon I start messing with an alt. when I am bored of that I go back to another toon.
Reason I say that is because they are so different it makes playing more than one toon with it.
WoW isn't for everyone. I got frustrated with the mid 40-58 as it was impossibly slow grind to 58 for OL but once I got to OL I flew through to 70.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Well...lol I would like to just say a few sentences regarding PvP/PK...IMHO If by PvP you are really indicating PK which I assume since you played Shadowbane which is nothing BUT pvp/pk since it went downhill.....TO BE A PK'ER AS OPPOSED TO PVP'ER the following criteria is necessary:
1. you must be between the age of 12 and 16 (although there are reports that some people over 16 actually like to PK.
2. You must kill only those that are lower level then you.
3. You must kill using the element of surprise.
4. You cannot kill any player that is your level or higher (see #6 below).
5. Your brain must be enveloped in the sludge of 1000 city sewers.
Finally 6. you must be a coward cause only a coward kills unsuspectingly, undercover, in the dark, and only those that are weaker.
NO NO I am not meaning this as a flame lol...its in good fun but I do believe that those that like to PK are usually cowards, as stated in the criteria above. It just makes sense. If you PVP..you are usually combating with someone of like level which can be great fun and even though WOW does not have tons of PVP I think I will give it a try anyway lol. Okie I will give no more of my opinions hehe. Have a great day!
it's fairly stable, simple, not too hardcore (good if you don't have a lot of time). after having quit about a year ago, I came back mainly because I meet some at work who plays, which makes it simply more fun for the interaction ingame and something to talk about at work during coffee break (guess due to being an old fart u don't have the buddie/friend gang from school around me playing at all, and if, then the same game).
I love e.g. EQ2, but you notice e.g. that certain areas are old designs not coming up to the same level of new areas, whereas WoW is more consistent (even if not all areas might be superb), that is something that bothers and bores me there.
I'm just saying, I played WoW for just over a year a year, realized that there was nothing fun to do. The most fun I had was screwing around in general chat. I looked at what was coming up for me, and only saw repetitive grinding, in a very non-social manner. There is nothing social about getting together with 39 people you barely no for something that plays out like an hour long office meeting, except without the face to face. Then I looked at what the alternative was, and there was nothing, maybe grind some trade skills or farm some gold. You need to have either a good social environment, and a way to properly navigate around it. WoW has it at first, and it slowly turns to a menial task throughout the game. As a matter of fact, if you place end game, up against the start of the game, you'll be shocked that Blizz managed to make the change so slow and subtle, instead of it having all the grace and speed of a rock slide. I have to give them credit for that, they are amazing designers, I'm just a little unnerved by this new direction. I'm even starting to get unsure of starcraft 2 (Blaspheme!).
Post Script: I really hope you see the irony in saying (I'm going to paraphrase here), Your skepticism about blizzard make me skeptical about what you say. Placing a lot of faith in a body governed by it's cash flow. Just keep in mind that Blizzard may be trying to please you, but it's only to please their shareholders, and you can easily be replaced. As is the burden of capitalism.
A game can't cater to everyone. It just so happens that this game isn't suited for you.
I agree that WoW's community is very solo oriented but I played with RL friends so it didn't really affect me. I found working to down each new mob/boss in normal instances and raiding to be fun but after fully completing an instance it became a grind. There was definitely much to improve on in PvP but usually I was satisfied in just killing opponents.
It's also not easy to switch to other MMOs. Pretty much every MMO out right now provides a similar experience as WoW. Many are also flawed and have design issues turning players away from the game.
Even though I quit, for the most part, I rather enjoyed WoW. Any game gets tiring after 3 years though.
I'm not sure why you're skeptical about Blizzard. Just because they made a game you didn't like in the MMO genre it doesn't mean their upcoming games will be bad. Blizzard has a reputation of quality games after all.
Oh and I can't wait for STARCRAFT 2!
I am the op. I believe the original question was: why YOU like wow.
I believe even if all you say is true, i will even bother to debate that, i am still entitled to my personal opinion.
Thank you for stopping by, disregarding the post's topic, and flaming.
p.s. i believe i never trashed the game through out my posts, but just posted my personal preferences and the reasons the game was not apealing to me, anyway thanks again for stopping by
