Hey, I've played UO, EQ, FFXI, GW and WoW...
I'm still playing FFXI for its pve game, and I enjoy it. I'm sick of WoW. I'm still trying to figure out how its the "best" game these days. Its just plain boring to me. More of the same, all the time.
I'm looking for a game to offset the lack of pvp in FFXI. Something that has PVP as the forefront and not an afterthought like WoW's is. I thought about DaoC because it has all the features I could want in a pvp mmorpg.. but not sure how active it still is.
I like to kill other players, and I like to compete against them in warfare. Hardcore pvp games are fine, I like pvp alot. What are some pvp mmo's that are still worth playing.
I know about all the new ones.. but frankly I like old school games. These new ones seem to suck out all the life in what an MMO used to be like.

there are a few i can think of that are highly involved with pvp. EVE-Online, Lineage 2, Planet side(kinda old and dated but was fun though)
then there is WArhammer that is coming out in a couple months which is highly involved with realm vs realm PVP combat whose gameplay PVP features harkon back to the days of DAoC. so you got a few games you can do a bit of research on and see what you like.
3.4ghz Phenom II X4 965, 8GB PC12800 DDR3 GSKILL, EVGA 560GTX 2GB OC, 640GB HD SATA II, BFG 1000WATT PSU. MSI NF980-G65 TRI-SLI MOBO.
EVE, Daoc, GW
RF Online just went f2p. It has good PvP if that's all you're looking for, not much PvE apart from leveling.
I'd love to recommend lineage II to you, but you pretty much would have to spend over a year to even be on the same level as everyone else, not even counting gear.
Not any good PvP games out these days, wait for AoC/WAR.
the problem with these new games is that they all are being catered to the new generation of mmo player. The ones that don't want to work, don't want to level, don't want to wait, don't want to get killed.. its just not the same as it was. Thats why i am considering an older game. FFXI is still going strong and still has many of the aspects I loved about old school mmo's. I hate these "do quests over and over until you level" ala WoW. That and the fact that most of these new games are going to have over exhorbant system requirements. I'm not buying a new pc just to play a game again.. Heck even on a GOOD system vanguard has problems. I want to give DAOC a shot.. i never played it and from what I read it seems fun.. just hope there are enough people still playing. I can't take WoW or anything like it anymore.

I just started in DAoC and the classic severs appear to have enough people playing to make it worth it. I believe the server (Gareth?) I started on usually has 600 - 800 people playing. In addition, I *think* they have clustered (linked in some manner) two other classic servers meaning the population should be higher. At any rate I've been having fun killing people in the battle grounds at low level (17th Thane) and you do gain a good amount of experience for doing so (though I'm not sure its wise to level strictly in the battlegrounds as I'm not sure I gain enough coin to upgrade my gear enough).
yeah, so far it looks promising.
I'm not that worried about a game having 9 million subscribers as long as there are enough mature active players for a fun experience. I think WoW becomes unfun sometimes due to the enormous amount of people.. since most of them are NOT mature, and that makes my game experience just not that fun. what other forms of pvp are there in DAOC

It is an old school MMO which does involve more work to be prepared to play against others. The PVP takes place in the form of Realm Vs Realm warfare in the Frontiers. The frontiers are a contested area for the three realms that have towers, keeps, and relics to fight over. You fight for control of these and they provide bonuses to your guild and realm.
The three realms each have tons of classes to choose from and they are pretty much different. So you end up with around 40ish classes to choose from. That doesn't even take into account the different ways you can train your particular class. For instance I am playing as a Battle Druid currently so I am trained for more offensive moves, such as a more powerful pet and more powerful Poison DOT as well as buffs. Or I can retrain my character and make him more of a healer/buffer.
The only real downside to Dark Age of Camelot is the lack of population. Definitely play on the Classic Server cluster (Bossiney) which is made up of the Gareth, Ector, and the "L" server (I forget the name). Gareth is the single most populated server.
The actual PVP is broken up into different categories as well by the players. You have Zerg warfare (seiges), you have 8man (1 single group looking for other single groups to fight), and you have the solo/duo (mostly made up of the stealth classes, since they can move around the frontiers stealthed and not need to worry about the larger groups as much). Personally I find the Zerg warfare to be the most fun since it involves fighting over towers and keeps, but a lot of players really enjoy the 8 man game.
Hopefully this helps in some manner.

Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
yeah that helps me out alot.
It sounds really fun so far. The lack of population thing hopefully won't make it too bad. Another question..
the game world.. is it fairly large? so that exploring can take place?

I was a long time DAoC player until recently (didn't really have the cash to fork out for an MMO period), and I can tell you that, yes, the game world is quite huge. The original mainland is made up of about 8 different zones for each realm, as well as 5 (I think, now) expansions that have come with entirely new areas with an average of about 5-6 zones each time. The game world is incredibly expansive, and there are tons of things to do. You just have to poke around a bit.
Also, if you decide to do a Co-op server, you will be able to travel throughout all 3 realms freely and complete quests within the other two mainlands as well.
why do people play wow exactly?
this game sounds amazingly fun.

I think it's because WoW seems too easy, and it's incredibly Streamlined. The guys who developed this game are the same ones who are currently working on WAR.
It's an amazing game, I just squeezed the life out of it (as anyone could do after 5 & 1/2 years of gameplay). I started this game when it came out, and had been playing ever since.
It's also a great place to find an incredible crowd. In DAoC, you won't find the Local or OOC chats filled with people whining about something or trying to sell junk for out rageous prices. You'll find people asking if you would like to quest with them, possibly be interested in doing a trial run with their guild, or even just looking for another person to go RvR with.
The crowd is way more mature, and I feel has always been leagues better than WoW could ever think to achieve.
for me, WoW was fun....
it reminded me of what a game would be like if Jak and Daxter was an MMO.
It seemed like a game for kids. hence, why there are so many playing.
the old school mmo's I am used to.. are more like persistent worlds you adventure in, and not "games" you play. the imagination and creativity people used to have is gone in these new MMO's... new mmo players can't get into games like UO because its not linear, and streamlined. Alot of the content, was just thing players decided to do, that they found fun. It wasnt content that was put in their laps, and they were told "hey do this, this is how the game is played". The new mmo generation, seems to be into games that are very close ended.. and they either don't or won't user their imagination.. so its just level up and raid.. and thats it.
I hate that, which is why i keep travelling back in time trying to find games that still have that "epic" feeling of adventure, when your characters and the world had meaning. It wasn't just some mind numbing leveling session..

For hardcore PvP/RvR, where you can PvP from Lv1, then look no further than Dark Age of Camelot (Classic server/cluster Gareth). Not all Battleground are that active; Level 20-24 is very, and 40-44, 45-49 used to be but I haven't logged on lately. Population is lower than it used to be, but RvR is still very active at peak time.
Obvously WAR (from the makers of DAoC) is going to be the must play of RvR next year - but meanwhile ... gotta play something
If you fancy some (limited) PvP, but rather fun, then Lord of the Rings (Player verse Monster Player PvMP) is your boy (or maggot depending on your vices).
Level a main character up to Level 10, and then you too can be an evil monster (level 50) in Ettenmoors. Needless to say the dice is loaded in favour of the free players (who have leveled a Heroic toon up to 41-50); the average hero needing at least two (or three) monsters (creeps) to take them down. All in all, quite fun, but definately not hard core for the l33t out there
Yeah, eager to try DAOC as soon as I get out of the hole.

I recomend Guild Wars, the entire concept of the game is PvP straight up. if you are looking for large scale pvp try L2 or DaoC.
