MMORPG research

Hey all,

Some researchers from the University of New Hampshire (myself included) are conducting a survey on MMORPGs.  Basically, with SO MUCH about gaming addiction we'd like to take a different approach and study the potentially positive aspects of social interactions that occur during gaming.

Thanks for your help!

most people could care less about the $25 gift card we just want the results ourselfs.

quite a few people are under the age of 18.  and in the US it's illegal to capture information from anyone below the age of 13 without parental waiver.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

    Hi,

If you feel like you don't want a chance at the $25 you don't have to sign up for it.

If an individual is not 18 that individual should exit the survey.  In order to take the survey one MUST be at least 18 years of age (as stated on the survey).  Short of requiring a credit card in the individual's name I'm not sure how to "verify" appropriate age.

In terms of the results: the final data will not be analyzed until we have a sufficient amount of participants with which to create our comparison groups.  After that point, we hope to get the paper published--at which time the results will be open to the public.

    Thanks,

    matt

So. I just gotta ask, if these researchers are a part of the U of New Hampshire, why are they using a generic survey website instead of setting up their own on a university system they should have access to?

I ask because I'm a bit of a stickler on security and privacy, and instinctively distrust most websites or individuals until they give a bit more proof towards their legitimacy. Also, hosting your survey on surveymonkey and expecting even halfway accurate results is a logical fallacy...

Because UNH is not set up to host surveys.  We still haven't gone to electronic participant sign-ups (yep, it's still the old: Put your experiment sheet on the hallway board and have students tear reminder sheets off).

We do have Black Board...so i guess that's something.

As for your second issue: internet surveys are interpreted conservatively.  As, typically, are all surveys.

However, we ask that you please answer as honestly as you can.  This is for science, after all.

Good post. Stay critically thinking. Intelligent skepticism is always a good thing.

    FOR SCIENCE!!!

Anyway, surveys are fun. I'll give it a shot until I reach those questions which are so numbingly and narratively constructed you know you're knee-deep in Objectivity, yes sir.

I'm also doing research on online gamers.  May I also post a survey here?

And Mattr, mind tellinng me which program you used to create the survey?

I, for one, don't mind if you post the link--so long as it is clear that there are 2 SEPARATE surveys.  I asked the site admins if i could post here so you might want to run it by them.

I used surveymonkey to set up the survey.  The good thing about them is that they have pre-made forms but you can also customize pretty easily.  They also make it easy to add skip logic and whatnot.  In addition, their site security is very good.

Sounds to me like you are presuming the addiction part.  Kind of rude imo.  But I don't doubt you will find what you are looking for if you focused on it and really wanting to find it.

I gave up on the survey after repeatedly answering the same type of social questions, asked differently each time, six different ways. How many times do you really need for someone to tell you how they feel about social situations or talking to people? Honestly...the survey turned into proving/disproving social repression in gamers by 50% and I just tossed it.

Hey I took the survey and it said I was a raving psycho and I should keep playing MMO's so I don't become a Harvard Graduate and become President or something. Just kidding, it really did say that though or at least that is what the voices are telling me.

I love science, it keeps us witch doctors and faith healers in business.

What is this, a survey to see how many MMO gamers are socially inept and have poor self-esteem?

If it is you forgot a question

I make up for my social inadequacies by flaunting my e-peen through my online avatar. :p

and another participant just finished, did miss the option european in the nationality option though, couldnt select other either, so selected dont like to tell

"There actually is a path, you just have to be able to see it..."
"well if that is all," said the blind guy.

I always found that funny because Caucasian isn't a race what so ever it was a term for people from a region between the black and caspian seas.
