I wonder if this is true?
"According to its creators, Turbine's The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar is currently second to World of Warcraft for a subscription-based MMO developed in the West - though they are not currently giving out precise subscriber numbers. "

Haha....
Now we have a guy from Turbine stating explicitly that "We're already the number two Western-developed MMO that's subscription-based -- basically number two to WoW."
But I am sure some people won't believe it, and still claim that it is number two to EQ2, and have less subscribers than it. Expect some pointless guessing in this thread:

...here we go again!
If Turbine says they are second, they need to put up or shut up. Anyone can say this or that about numbers, but if there's no proof of numbers, it's all specualtion. It's all on Turbine's terms now, they just need to show the numbers. End of debate!
Agreed.... as long as they are afraid to put up the numbers..... their claims are no more valid than anyone elses.
And since SOE and some others don't post specific numbers it will be hard to compare it to EQ 2...... so the world may never know.....
But you know, that article had a lot of other information to talk about than sub numbers (which have been pointlessly beaten to death here) ...... too bad the OP didn't focus on some of that content instead.....

no matter what turbine says, guys like you will always tell they lying.
Can Turbine make that claim if it wasnt true? Seriously, can they? I would think their competitors would be all over them if it wernt. I think the proof is that there isnt another company saying.." umm, we're #2, not lotro". Until I see that, there is no reason not to believe that claim for me personally.

We are actually discussing the OP's post...in that he missed so much better information, and had to run this whole " We are Number 2 " into the ground again. It's all spin...that even Gamasutra has to say
" According to its creators," and " Though they are not currently giving out precise subscriber numbers. "
So, I will not say they are "lying"...they are spinning...and if pushed, would have to add some misnomer...like in the "West".. or "North America"
Anyways...this is my favorite part...right at the beginning
How is The Lord of the Rings Online doing since the launch?
Jeffrey Steefel: It's doing well.
Adam Mersky: It's doing really well.
Note the difference in wording...Jeffrey the Producer has one sentence and Adam...the spinmeister...uh...Communications, spits out a whole diatribe...adding the "Really"...and then going on about how they have grown the world...
Why not mention..."People"?
But, hey, I don't think they are lying...and I think the game is profitable, and doing well for them...as they are not a large company, with a huge amount of users...like NCSoft or SOE or Blizzard. Their userbase is more than adequate for their size...
Also, with being a private company...we will not know anything of numbers until...they go public..
Which I think will be their next big step...after changing CEO's
Public Offer, Public Funding, More Exposure...then LOTRO can be quite the commercial success
Cheers!

Those are the keywords...so, as long as companies do not "report" (SOE for example), then Turbine has that lead...so, they can only base their data on what is reported...
MMOG's charts for example show more subs (based on some criteria that we still are not aware of)...so, according to THAT chart...LOTRO is number 2 of North American developed MMO's
NA developed big name games include...DAoC , CoH/CoV and WoW (at least based on data available...can anyone find any other NA developed games...)
So...your right...they are not lying, and no one is going to call them on it...
Cheers!

no matter what you say eq2 can't compete with lotro on subscriptions , LOTRO has more then 300 or 400k subscriptions for sure and still growing while eq2 is declining.

Ok...oh...as long as you show me where you received your numbers of course...because you give some sub numbers...all I need is your proof.
Also, how did you get into EQ2...as I do not mention EQ2 at ALL...so why bring it up?

because you are a eq2 fanboi that spent more time on lotro forums everyone knows that.and i don't need any proof, just log in on any eq2 server and do the same for lotro you will see the diference, while in eq2 you find like 100 people online, in lotro you would find over 2k people on any server at pick times, last night on windfola were 1890 people online not counting with anonymous and monster play chars and other people on session play, that ones we can't count. note that windfola is one of the less populated servers. Now give us your eq2 numbers.
Don't forget..I am also a Guild Wars, WoW, Hellgate London Fanboy also...heck throw in DDO as well..
Why?
As I feel they are all better games..but, the fanboy has nothing to do with real world data. What I want to know...again (as you have not shared this data yet)...is how you know HOW many people were on last night on your server? Did you do a /who? It has been stated 100's of times here and on the original LOTRO forums...this is never accurate.
Data can fluctuate as your running your /who...anons do not show up as you said, you could count someone twice as they login, and then log onto an alt, and how many are trials (which I have seen a lot of people complaining about as these turn out to be a ton of Gold Spammers...check your LOTRO forums)?.. The scariest part to me is how you have an EXACT count...almost as if you ...work for Turbine...and this fascinates me more.
As to logging into EQ2 and checking...there is no way there as well to check numbers.....I can only visualize...and as I had stated before..I logged into Landrovel the day after the Book 11 patch, and saw no one in Bree (and as I said..probably buying houses)...but, when I log into Antonia Bayle...the largest server in EQ2...someone is always chatting, someone is always running by me, or the central city hubs ALWAYS have people. And when was the last time you logged into EQ2?
Again...I never said EQ2 is better than LOTRO population wise, so if you wish, I WILL state my other fanboy game (Guild Wars) whoops LOTRO's pants off for population...how is that?
No...my issue is...all you have is still speculation. And I am happy that your speculaltion is Turbine has a bustling population, and as long as your happy...well....isnt that what matters? So, no need to continue arguing with me...as I even stated I believe Turbine based on their wording that they are the #2 North American Developed Subscription Based MMO!
Cheers
One thing to point out, they fixed the gold seller spamming, you can no longer send tells from the trial accounts other than to people who've added you to their friends list.
I think it works with mail too,as since book 11 ive not had any gold spamming mail either, which i remember getting when i was playing back in book 10.
You now also have the option to only recieve tells and invites from those in your friends and kinship, and theres stil the annonymous function to remove you from /who.
Don't forget..I am also a Guild Wars, WoW, Hellgate London Fanboy also...heck throw in DDO as well..

first there is no /who command in lotro.you open social painel and remove the players zones, and you will have the max of 100 players showing, then you search for lvls 1/5,5/10 till lvl 50, thats the correct way to know how many non anonymous, mpvp, and session players you have online. thats the only way you have to know. so when i said there was 1890 players online last night on windfola of course i wasn't counting with the ones that not show on painel.
this not speculation like you said, these numbers are REAL, just go in game and count.
other thing that dev stated lotro grow up their subscription base by 20% in last months, wich is pretty good.
That is good sign then...thanks for the heads up. But, the LOTRO main site lists this as a feature
Limited Tells: 7-Day Free Trial players have a limit on how many /tells they can send over a given period of time.
I do not see any other limitation...so, this must be a NEW fix..
Cheers!
ok again since you never did it in game now i see, /who only opens you the social painel on who is on, on the same area you are, you can open it and find 3 people or no one there, you have to do exactly what i told
Why would you think I never did it in game? Do you believe I have never played the game? Yet, you have, and did not even know /who existed?
Maybe you meant YOU had never done it in game
So, you meant to say in proper english
"Ok...since I HAVE never done this in game, I see this opens the social panel..."...where by the way, you can still do as you have done, change criteria, etc...
I am not underestimating your capability of counting in game players based on the social panel, and I am not countering the statement from Turbine about being the #2 NA developed fee based MMO...and finally, I do not doubt that LOTRO's numbers are better than EQ2's...
Overall, this was a puff piece, with data about the "World" and not in subs, but one line mentioned subs, and the OP made this thread based on that...just seems overall...another silly thread with no "subscription" facts..
And then of course here we are again arguing semantics and wording...
Shall we just let it go?
Cheers!

Turbine say:
As part of the initiative to reduce the amount of spam players are receiving from gold-sellers, we have added new filtering to the /tell feature in LOTRO!
Players will find a new option in their Options panel which allows them to only receive /tells from players on their Friends list or in their Kinship. This option is turned OFF by default. If you would like your /tells filtered, please check this option to enable it.
Trial and Referral accounts will always be subject to this filtering, even if a player has their /tell filtering turned off. If you or a friend are a Trial or Referral account and you'd like to be able to use /tell in-game, you should contact each other via email, IM, or the forums and arrange to add each other to your Friends lists.
We believe this filtering will drastically reduce the amount of /tell spam our players are receiving. Thanks for your patience while we worked on the problem; more anti-spam code will be introduced in Book 11, and our Customer Service team continues to diligently follow up on your reports and banning spammers from the game!
