Varying Play Styles

RJO_RJO_ Member Posts: 174

I've tried a few times to play Eve and while I've enjoyed the UI, the community and running some missions, etc eventually I started getting my ass handed to me in missions, etc and I get frustrated and quit.

I'm going to give the game another try and this time I was planning on checking out the non combat play options the game offer.

So what all does this game offer?  I know there is mining and stuff... But what is fun?  What makes money?  Where will I find some appeal?

My big question is how is the crafting in the game?  Is it involved?

Thanks all.. any feedback you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

EVE doesn't have crafting, per se. It has "production". Mind you, EVE's economy is one of the most indepth and, frankly, awe-inspiring, of any MMO. (hah, I dare anyone to call me out on this. 'specially all of those who whine about eve fanboi's and whatnot.)

You can PVP in the economy, if you so choose. It takes alot of isk, and alot of time, but I've driven other sellers out of markets; selling at a loss, buying up everything, then resetting prices to your choosing, etc. In EVE, you either mine or buy minerals, get a blueprint, or blueprint copy, and "install" it into a factory in a station, click a few buttons, pay some isk, and, depending on the item, after a duration of time, you get your fresh-baked ammo or modules, or ships. There is a huge amount of complexity to this process, however, as you can research BP's to reduce mineral costs, times associated, etc. with more items and skills, you can invent to create tech 2 BP's, and those require parts made from moon-mining and POS's. The economy side isn't for everyone- you need to find your niche.

There are things like the new exploration system, as well, that, if you get lucky, can make you rich.

Now is the best time to come back to EVE, because we are on the eve of the new expansion, Trinity. new graphics, ships, etc.

I have three characters, on two accounts. two of those characters are geared towards production and the economy. It takes alot of work, but the satisfaction that comes with controlling a market, or from seeing all of the green entries in your wallet, i think, is on par with the pretty explosions associated with some poor fool's BS going nuclear. That's just me though.

Sorry I should have been more game specific I guess :D  I am indeed really interested in the details of the production system...

Is it involved enough to be a full time play style?

  • SpornSporn Member Posts: 259

Yeah it can be a full time play style and the amount of things you can produce is staggering.  There is even a black market for drugs.

Here's the deal, mission running is sort of ground zero.... you really need to start there and learn to master them, before proceeding with the rest of the game...consider it your "foundation" into EVE.

Perhaps you failed to make a proper character, if so, here's a great guide to make sure you do it correctly.

    wiki.goonfleet.com/index.php

Next, make sure you learn the basics, you must be sure to do the tutorial, all the way through...you'll come out of it with a couple of nice mission running ships (esp if you decide to make a Caldari, which i recommend for new players)

Now, time to do some reading, be sure to read a new players guide or three...a quick Google search will turn up many of them.... but this is a great place to start.....

    www.allabouteveonline.net/Player%20Guides/BattleClinics_EVE_online_Guide-1.pdf

Pay special attention to the section about the importance of learning skills.

Now, if mining is your forte, (its not mine, there's lots to learn about it.... no place better for that than this guide here:

    www.allabouteveonline.net/Player%20Guides/completeminersguide_ver2.0.1halada.pdf

Tell you what, just check out this link, it has guides for just about every facet of EVE.....

    www.allabouteveonline.net/playerguides.htm

Next, do the tutorial....(just making sure)

Now, really important, don't go it alone.... EVE is a lonely place without a Corporation... consider joining EVE University right off the bat...they'll even take trials.... and they exist just to train new players into the game.... you can always join another corp later on...won't hurt their feelings...

    www.eve-db.com/corporations/354.htm

Crafting is very important in this game....since we all spend a lot of our time blowing up each other's ships, someone has to keep making new ones...... its a wonderful cycle.

You can craft Ships, Tier 2 modules, POS equipment  (Tier one aren't much use) and some other parts which go into the production of each....

Other occupations, Pirate, Trader, Explorer, 0.0 ratter/miner etc etc..... heck, scamming is a legal way to make money....no one will stop you if you can get away with it...(except maybe the players you piss off)

Good luck and I hope you find your place in EVE.....

mispost... forums being wierd tonight for me.

so you want to PvP... but how?

well my friend you need a corperation. or maybe even an allaince to join :)

My allaince NMTZ (not going to spell whole thing ) is allied with eve uni.

If your new to eve and want to learn everything and always have people to play with there is no better place than eve university. if you fel like staying full time they have a corperation after that for teachers and stuff called ivy leadge. if you specialize in small ship you could even get to play in the allaince tournament!

you know what the allaince tournament is maybe?

well hope I could help. my in game name is mothermoon.

If I read correctly, he isnt interested in pvp. I have to say, that is sorta sad to me. EVE has a stunning economy, but pvp is really what draws me in. I work alot, and dont have time to keep up with the market trends. I rat when I need money, recently got into moon mining for a little passive boost, and pvp my little heart out when I have the time.

Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.

PvP might catch my interest down the line but I really want to build a base before I get in a position where I am putting my assets at risk :D

Thanks everyone keep the great advice coming.. this thread is fantastic already.  Last time I played I did a lot of research because the learning curve is a big part of the appeal to me.  It looks like this time I just have to take the research to the next level (which you all are helping me with and I appreciate)

What is fun in EVE? Well that depends on the player. Some have fun pirating, some have fun building Player owned stations. Some have fun exploring the universe for different elements such as hidden complexes, some have fun in huge fleet battles and mass war. Some have fun in small gang mobile infultration. The list goes on. EVE is a massive universe. Some corps roleplay. Others get shitfaced drunk and party in long congo lines after victory. (A congo line is when many ships follow eachother closely).

What makes money? Many things from the market (Buy low sell high) Buy from one station transport items to station where market value is higher. Manufacture. Most ships/mods in eve are player made. Kill NPC rats the lower security system the more you'll make. Missions, Great cash plus points to spend on faction items from your local faction store. Player owned stations, on the right moon they suck minerals for some nice cash flow. Mining. Mercenary work-big market out there for corps being hired to kill and disrupt or even protect. I am sure I missed things but you get the point.

Where to find appeal? That really depends on YOU. Are you a evil bastard that wants to backstab a corp and steal things from their corp hanger? Are you a honorable soldier looking for a just war? Maybe just a loner who wants to make his own way. Many paths to take.

Crafting is the best in this game then any other I've seen. It's pretty complicated, but just about everything in game is player made. EVE's economy is so advanced they have reports from a real economist. Reporting on price trends and tons of other incite. EVE TV is a TV show based on the game. Try watching that. EVE is the largest MMO by far with the most people on 1 server. Feels like your a tiny fish in a huge ocean when you start it.

EVE takes patience. It's nothing like any MMO out. I plan to stick with EVE for a long time. The future looks very strong for this game. New engine is at this moment being implemented. Soon releasing out of ship avatars also. You will be able to get out of your ship.

The new graphics engine is flat out STUNNING.

I do not work for or have any affiliation to EVE other then enjoy a creation from devs who also love the game.

Just remember. Scams are legal in this game as long as they don't mess with the code. Like spys pretending to want a corp only to lie and get access to info/items they want. EVE is close to the real world in this aspect. It's a dangerous universe. EVE U can help prepare you.

I strongly suggest looking up a player corp named "EVE University". They are always glad to bring in new people and train you for the massive universe you'll be off into. You can even stay with EVE U and become a trainer. In any case they are a good help.

Here's a good way to get an idea about production:

    1) Uncheck the "show only available" box in market and look at the blueprints in the market database.  (With this box unchecked youcan see everything sellable on the market even if it's not available in your region).

    2) Click the info icon on the BPs look at the materials and skills requirements.  Look at the items produced by the blueprints. This will give you an idea about skills and materials you need for production AND invention.

    3) Check contracts for T2 BPOs and BPCs.  You can look at item info from contracts to see what these builds entail (although don't expect  to afford much in this realm for quite a while unless you're doing your own invention).

    4) Go around and LOOK AT contracts and regional markets to see what's selling and for how much before you decide on producing anything.  Lots of BPOs are available from NPCs if you want to research and copy (you'll likely need your own POS for this) and a TON of BPCs are available in contracts if you want to jump right in building.

Eve is largely like this: decide what you want to do, and then set out getting the skills and materials to do it.  I've been playing over 3 years, I love it, and I still feel like a complete noob in some aspects of the game. How awesome is that?

This is so true.  I've been playing for 6 months now... started out in one direction, changed tack and went another...and now, I've come up with a new and different plan in light of today's expansion.

I'm sure I'll do this again and again...  which is what makes the game good.   Compare that to LotRO where I felt after 2 months that I knew everything about the game that I'd ever need to know ...and all I could do from there on out was rinse and repeat.

I had to laugh, our corporation leader who's been playing for a bit over 2 years now decided he needed to run missions to train up his faction, and it was the first time he'd ever run them. (he went straight into 0.0 when he started)  I got to teach him a thing or three about the finer points about running in Empire

yeah, especially if you make your own rails/php database that you can view from the ingame browser.  Now that you can get .csv's of your wallet it's pretty neat.  Researching blueprints, running a freighter with ships to amarr to sell instead of jita cause they sell better in amarr, invention, all that stuff is pretty fun and takes enough time and thought to occupy most of your time in the game if you so desired.  When i'm not making stuff I run lvl 4 missions in high sec to get a few minerals and salvage stuff.   I don't produce fulltime, cause I don't play fulltime, but if you wanted to, i'm sure you could, and if you needed alts so that you could research more blueprints at once or build more things at once, you might be making enough isk to pay for those accounts with isk.

Hmmm well I have been playing only since early 2004 and have found that if I want to go out and cause carnage I can do this (I live in 0.0 space so I don't need to go very far to find something to kill or at the very least fight with)

Also if/when I feel like it I can  just go and do some manufactoring or invention so I can either save myself some ISk or make myself some ISK.

Then there is a side of the game that not everyone knows about, that is the side where players can invest ISK into relatively safe corps that then pay interest back to you. There is now also a bank I think and although I can hear people saying it is a scam actually it isn't and it is worth looking into if you have a few hundred million ISK to invest.

There are many many different ways the game can be played and although it really isn't aimed at  the younger online game players it is a game that you can play and always be learning something new.

As of approc 24 hours ago the NEW content and version of the game was started, so as of approx 2am today people can download the new client and enjoy EVE in an even nicer way. A lot of the graphics have been updated and things now look a whole lot better for those people who are able to use the new graphic content. (Refer to official posts for more info on this), and even if you can't use the new graphics you can still play EVE and enjoy the new ships and other things that have been added to the game.

For invention there is a good sticky on the eve forums: http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=512603

I don't know any other links off the top of my head, but it basically goes

buy blueprint from market (all blueprints on the market are originals)

        make stuff with that blueprint

        or research it for efficiency

or research it for faster productivity time

or copy it to try to invent the tech 2 part or to sell the copies

You can do all those things with a blueprint, just not at the same time.

so if you buy a blueprint by looking at it you should be able to figure out what you can do with it, and invention is making a tech 2 blueprint copy from a tech 1 blueprint copy.

I would start with a cheap bpo that people would like the tech 2 version of.  Like a sniping battleship gun (425 railgun) or a heavy assault cruiser weapon (220 vulcan autocannon)

you'll still have to supplement your income until you get a good thing going though I think.

I only do the factory stuff cause I lucked out with a tech 2 bpo during the lottery days

OP I recommend you give mining a shot.

It might be your cup of tea.

    Theres alot to do.

Find the activities you enjoy and do them.

In the end Eve is not for everybody.

    Peace out
