I played AO for 5 years straight from June 2001, through all the delightful expansions and committed in-game service that FC had to offer. Loved the game. Lived the game. Founded a cool guild (still exists today...guess the name!!) made a tonne of friends, saw the best and worst an MMO could offer.
I know that the point of this thread is to identify alternatives to AO, and there are definitely a few out there, but I think it will be difficult to rekindle the flame many AO vets feel, not so much because of the strengths or weaknesses of current MMOs, but because the AO vets themselves have probably changed and evolved so much... For those of us that "lost our MMO virginity" to AO, can you really ever duplicate the feeling you had... that first time?
OK enough nostalgia, back to the cold and heartless world of Eve
I wish I could help you but I am in the same boat. I played AO from almost the start but SL killed the game for me.
Same SL absolutly destroyed the game for me, everyone left for SWG or other games soon after it seemed as well.
When I left I went to Planetside--->City of Hero's--->WOW--->Planetside--->City of Villians--->WOW--->Call of duty 4 (LOL).
I took some detours at DAOC, EQ2, Guild Wars, Neocron, Endless Ages, SWG, EVE, but I those didn't last for more then a week or 2.

I loved AO and the majority of my playtime was during the SL/AI phase. Once the game went full froob, I noticed the community's quality seemed to dwindle down. In my early days of AO, their was so much help abound from so many very nice people. After the game went free, it seems like lots of immature kids whom no longer needed a credit card or even... any money at all for that matter were flooding into the community. I sure miss the old days of AO pre-eden.
After AO I went to WoW for 6 months. I did play WoW when it first launched but due to all the problems I quickly canceled. I did play WoW at the time when Burning Crusade had just come out so it was kind of cool. After that I tried EVE for 3 months but found it to be too slow for my pace, still it was a great game. I did LOTR for 3 months as well but felt like I was playing WoW with a new paint job.
I now play TR and have re-captured the good times I was having in AO pre-Eden expansion. TR does have it's bugs/issues but they sure are fixing them fast... every 2 weeks they launch a patch with new content and all kinds of fixes. I haven't settled into TR yet, I'm giving it 6 months and at that point I'll decide to renew or not. I miss my old AO friends but it seems most of them are gone. I did create a froob account to say "hi" from time to time. I've run into a few old AO pals on the TR servers which is always a pleasant surprise
PS. I was thinking of starting a guild full of old Anarchy Online players. My name in TR is Omni if you ever want someone to hang out with. I do have a great guild I joined a week ago but I might just start a clan one day for old AO refugees.
I played AO from launch-day through a couple months of the Shadowlands expansion, which killed the game for me. Like many of you, I haven't been able to find anything that captured me like AO did. I've tried all the usual suspects, and some were great but they just didn't have it.
I'm currently trying TR, and it's a mess, but I'll stick with it even though I don't have high hopes for it. Also trying Eve Online, Guild Wars and Hellgate... What else should I look into? I never tried EQ2... ???
EDIT: I think I may just stop fighting it and resinstall AO. Why fight it? I just can't find anything better out there to fill the void.
Well, Funcom is making a new game called Age of conan. Its going to be released March 25,2008 and it looks very good. It has new aspects that no other MMO has like its combat system. It looks very nice. Hope this helps

I can understand why you would suggest this and maybe it's a good game but FC angered me for years with their inability to listen to the player community. AO is still going and I hear they are going to get a full graphics upgrade. I always hoped they would make Anarchy Online 2.0 but I can see why... with all the content in the game.. it would be better up give it a face lift instead of a frame-off. Why re-create 6 years of content?
Next patch adds a Social clothing tab, something people have been asking for for years. Along with that will be some variation of an 'inspect' capability, to see what other people have for their equipment.

Don't forget that it's yet again a fantasy mmo. And more and more that so called "special" combat system is going more and more over to the same old combat.
Funcom have been talking a lot about AoC. I hope they can deliver what they talk about.
I have been around the block a few times and to be honest I am not happy with the current state of the MMO genre.
I will try AOC when it comes out, but I only really have hope for originality of IP and gameplay in that FC mmo: The secret World, and that wont be out for years to come.
i've played most of the MMOs that have released since, but nothing has kept my interest past a couple months. i go back to EVE every so often, but that also only entertains me for a few months at a time.
I completely stopped playing MMO's, instead I created my own company and we are now producing our own first MMO.
Actually I revisit all the MMO's I have been trying, just to get that feeling again, help my own design etc. I might have a look at AoC and even Warhammer, but hopes for a great design is low (since I have already seen both...).
Been playing AO on and off since 2001, Its a really nice mmo and the time before SL was better. I like the AI and LE but SL is not as good, still very playable tho. Played a few months ago in a guild called Ragnarok on RK1, then in Terminal Verocity (Or something) Got 207 Mp and 190ish Crat, love ao.
I acually started to play AO again , but I dont have axess to my old account so I am doing the play free thing level 60 MA and 32 Soldier, game still kicks some of the new mmo´s butt even if its 7 years old.
Indeed, this game kicks the ass out of most new games I really wish there would some more sci-fi games, played tabula rasa on openbeta but compared with Ao its really not worth playing
Comments

Today I don't play much. Most mmo's on the market are the same or they too old or too wierd.
Going on and off with AO, but most of the time I play Medieval 2 and sometimes RF Online.
Still wait for a Sci-fi mmo with a lot of freedom.
Don't forget that it's yet again a fantasy mmo. And more and more that so called "special" combat system is going more and more over to the same old combat.

Not much, is there an MMO worth playing?

i finally gave up on AO after AI released.
i've played most of the MMOs that have released since, but nothing has kept my interest past a couple months. i go back to EVE every so often, but that also only entertains me for a few months at a time.
i'm just waiting for AoC and TSW at this point.
I completely stopped playing MMO's, instead I created my own company and we are now producing our own first MMO.

Back to playing AO again as all of the other games suck
Very true , I am waiting for something worth playing.
I returned back to AO recently, maybe the new games will capture my attention maybe not. Time will tell, but for now I'm back in Rubi-ka.
The only game I'm waiting for is AoC and that wont be out until Marsh and need something to keep me occupied until its out.
Indeed, this game kicks the ass out of most new games I really wish there would some more sci-fi games, played tabula rasa on openbeta but compared with Ao its really not worth playing
haha
I can relate
I stopped playing AO 2 months ago, having a break, will be back eventually though.
I tried WOW, wow just annoys me. Full of children and its just not the game for me
RS definitely no
EVE gets boring quick
StarWars I would play but dont have the money atm
But other than star wars, there really is no other game that matches up to Anarchy Online
The community rocks
PVP rocks
the ARKS and GM's rock
PVM rocks
gameplay rocks
everything rocks
i cant wait to go back ^^
