New Player . . . Need a lil' help

NongeNonge Member Posts: 28

Hey guys,

Just started downloading EVE right now and I've gone over a lot of the guides and sites and there's just so much out there I decided to go here for some good answers:

I want to be a Pirate, a Rogue, if you will, and I'm leaning toward either Gallente or Minmatar but will listen to arguements for the other two races. I want to be viable in both PvE and PvP. My playstyle is more "Strike first, strike hard."

Are drones viable in PvP or strictly for PvE?

I know there's so much to learn in this game I just want to start off on the right foot, y'know, so any feedback will greatly be appreciated.

Btw, I don't have any ambition right now to fly a Titan just something to carry a god amount of loot and the ability to unleash Hell quickly.

If you want to be a pirate or rogue go minmatar.  It will take you a little longer to master some of the ships but if your gonna invest 3 to 6 months into this game it is worth the wait.

Well if this game lives up to my expectations I'll be around for a good long while.

Now, why exactly do YOU recommend Minmatar, though?

Minmatar: Fastest ships (of their classes, of course), balanced builds (many ships can either armor- or shieldtank equally well), use projectile weapons (aka. choose your damagetype guns) and missiles (aka. I shotzorz the ratzorz) and drones (Look! Mini-me!).

They aren't outstanding in damage or tank, but the balance is good. Minmatar were made for PVP.

Of course, for fleetwork, you'll want a Gallente... :D

Minmatar have some of the finest solo and small gang ships in the game. Gallente have many of the others. (Everybody gets some). Minmatar ships are typically built to be fast and light raiders. However, some of their ships are incredibly durable for their class and/or do a lot of damage in the right circumstances.

Also bear in mind that you can train ships from any race, should you choose. However, my wife's been playing as a Minmatar for about a year and a half and, even though she's barely trained anything that isn't Minmatar PVP, she's still got work to do. The curse of flying Minmatar is that, while you can do almost anything, you have to spend the time to learn everything. Most other races can focus on one thing (armor or shields, missiles or turrets or drones, etc) and be successful. To fly Minmatar is to have to train it all, if you want to use the ships properly. Of course, once you've done all that, it's a LOT easier to cross-train.

ok to start off, I fly Minmatar. Solid and great ships but, there isn't a "best race" in Eve. Some do start with advantages in one way or another. The way Eve is set up is that every character can do everything with enough time and detication. So who is the best race for PvP is going to be a subject of great debate, sufice to say is pick a race you are interested in playing. But if you still end up playing Minmatar you won't be disappointed.

You will want to join the chat channel Eve University and learn from those guys awhile, it will really give you a jump start on being a pirate.

Gallente ships are built to be in your face and personal with drones. Drones are bad to the bone in both PvP and PvE, the only problem with them is that you have to remember to scoop them back up before you warp or you will loose them so keep this in mind when you try to make a fast get away. Gallente ships are designed for drones Minmatar are not but can carry them.

I fly a Rifter and I have never wanted another Frig yet.

I belive what is more important than what race you train is choose the right attributes that will deside how fast you train for stuff.

You can choose a balanced character and get a overall good character, it might take abit longer to train to become a good pvp'er ofcourse, or you can choose stuff like Perception.

    Here is from EVE-Online's forum:

    "Corporation Management: Memory / Charisma

    Drones: Memory / Perception

    Electronics: Intelligence / Memory

    Engineering: Intelligence / Memory

    Gunnery: Perception / Willpower

    Industry: Memory / Intelligence

    Leadership: Charisma / Willpower

    Learning: Memory / Intelligence

    Mechanic: Intelligence / Memory

Missile Launcher Operation: Perception / Willpower

    Navigation: Intelligence / Perception

    Science: Intelligence / Memory

    Social: Charisma / Intelligence

    Spaceship Command: Perception / Willpower

    Trade: Charisma / Memory"

In the case of a good pvp'er he would need Spaceship command (perception/willpower) and (Intelligence/Memory) so if you can balance between those 4 (out of 5) attributes it would be great, or you should have slightly higher on Perception and Intelligence, over the other.

That would make you train faster for ships, gunnery, Mechanic and Engineering... also get trained Electronic as in here you often finds stuff like Warp Scrambler (important tool for pirates).

Also don't waste time training the learningskills too high, I would not have them higher than lvl 3 to begin with as more than that takes weeks to train for, and you want out in your shiny new ship and start killing (ratting mostly and missionrunning for iskies).

Isk you need to get new ship when you loose your ships (and you will loose ships) and equipment.

Well Minmatar or Gallante sound more likely to fit what your asking for.  You want to "Strike first, strike hard" and that sounds like Gallante too me.  Why?  Because Gallante are the hardest (were?) hitting ships in Eve.  Here is a break down between Minmatar and Gallante:

Minmatar: fast, hit and run style.  They dont do a whole lot of damage but make up for it in their speed and their ability to fight at range (20-25km).  They are said to be the best solo pvp ships.

Gallante: These guys are the in-your-face, point blank, high damage dealers.  They fly right up to 0km and pound your hull to dust.  They aren't as fast as Minmatar but some of the ships get speed bonuses.  Since they fight at extremely close range there is no running away if you are losing like Minmatar can do; its either win or lose with these guys and because of this they aren't considered as solo pvp ships.  These guys also use drones and are known as the "drone race."  Drones are big in Pvp and a lot of times means the difference between a win or lose in a fight.  Problem with Gallante is that with your Microwarp Drive(speed), your big guns and your armor tank, you lose alot of cap and fast.  To counter this alot of times you will need a cap booster (mid slot) and cap booster charges which take up alot of your cargo.

Anyways, this and what Arctic said should help you make your decision.

From personall experience if you want a charecter with farly ballanced atributes [excluding social] then go fr Mimitar and do the new bloodline.

Um, the Vherokior have really high charisma and social skills. There might be builds that make them great for everything but charisma-based skills, but I don't know what they are. They make great traders, support characters (gang boosters and logistics)  and mission runners. But if you want to do nothing but fight, go Brutor. If you want balance, go for Sebiestor.

I went Minmatar, Brutor, Special Forces, Workers and so far it's going well. My attributes after 24 hours are:

    6.36 CH
    9.54 INT
    11.66 PER
    8.48 MEM
    13.78 WIL

Now if I could only figure out how to lock the camera behind my ship lol.
