BioWare Corp. adopts Wwise® for upcoming MMO
Audiokinetic’s award-winning solution to be used in MMO developed by BioWare Austin
Montreal, Canada – December 12, 2007 – Audiokinetic Inc., a leading audio solution provider for the video game industry, announced today that BioWare Austin, a development studio of BioWare Corp®, will use Audiokinetic’s audio solution, Wwise, as one of the technology tools used in the development of its upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO).
“Wwise provided our team with a sophisticated and complete audio development tool for our online game experience,” says Gordon Walton, Co-Studio Director, BioWare Austin. “We wanted a complete authoring environment that would facilitate the development of a rich audio experience, and we’ve found Wwise to be a great fit.”
Another key factor in the selection was the support that Audiokinetic offers, and the opportunity that is given to BioWare to influence the choice of new functionalities in Wwise. “Over the time, our online game will evolve and so will our needs, “says Gordon Walton. “We see Audiokinetic as a excellent partner who has the capability to bring us more tools in the future that will help us create an unrivalled gaming experience.”

Hopefully EA has them rush an announcment....sheesh
A lot of speculation and hype about a game which hasnt been even announced. I, too, am hoping for KOTOR or any Sci-Fi based MMORPG honestly (we do not need yet another fantasy game) but we have to be realistic. There is a lot of great ideas that turn into vaporware, and this may be one.
Time will tell

Seriously, the suspense is killing me.
We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started... and know the place for the first time.

The only thing left for them to tell us is what it's based on.
This is exactly why they don't make an announcement. They get far more positive hype and interest from not announcing. As soon as the announcement comes, the flamers and fanboys will open fire on each other resulting in a lot of negative hype based solely on personal opinion of the genre. By keeping it a secret, everyone stays interested hoping it's the game they are looking for.
What amazes me is how BioWare is getting so many middleware solutions. I think it is great, because these companies focus on improving those tools and thus, Bioware is free to work on the game and focus on it. They also just licensed Mogware tool for content management.

It is interesting that a couple of companies right now are developing "secret" MMO's and not telling the public much about them. Wonder what started this trend?

flamers started this trend. you get all the hype and very little negativity. it's hard to flame a project when you don't know what it is. the fanboys will still speculate and hope it's what they are looking for though based on projects the company has released in the past.
This would fit right along with how LEC does things though. They always make a big bang about what it is they are using for a game right before the game comes along. Also LEC likes new tech in all their games. SWG was ground breaking, but it was also broken. BW is gonna do them right by picking the highest dollar stuff to put in this game. As for any other company following suit it's more of copy cat thin. Lots of interest is being generated by not knowing what the mmo is, the use of viral marketing seems to be the best route to go. You get interest generated, with the bonus not having to deal with people who come in and tell you how they think something should be made. By the time the game comes along everyone is gonna wanna see what all the hype is about.
Not sure if a MMO from bioware is a good thing. They have no MMO experience. As much as I want a good KOTOR online fix.

Their lead developer in Austin is a 15 year veteran of MMO creation, and has been in the game industry for about 20. Most of the devs on the team came from other MMO companies. There is no shortage of talent, just what they can do with it.
Just I see too high hopes for this MMO by Bioware. They make great single player RPGs. But I just don't see a MMO working out.

The above is my what if AzurePrower quote.
We won't know until....We Know.
So who wants to chip in and hire a private investigator to find out what this secret MMO is?
I'm sure there are a few Bioware employees who, on occassion, bring work home with them. All it would take is someone leaving a powerpoint slide or a CD-ROM or whatever laying on the seat of their car or something.
Playing WoT now.

lol@ talking about biowares game they haven't announced being vaporware. get off the paranoia bandwagon there kiddo.
die.
this was a very common argument about blizzard when wow was in development. weather you like wow or not i think it is safe to assume they were successful with their first mmog.
besides, there have been a lot of these mmog projects attempted by other companies, some with great success and some not so great, i think any company with a good size bank account and pedigree like bioware can learn from the past and incorporate it into an awesome story driven mmog.

It is highly unlikely that this will end in vaporware, but you gotta understand the concern people have. It's happened many times the last few years.
We would only hope and think that the same would apply for Bioware and their Star Wars KOTOR MMO.
The thing is. Warcraft, starcraft, etc. have had included multiplayer at least. Most if not all Bioware games have be exclusively singleplayer.
Blizzard had practice at maintaining an online game. The majority (excluding this new lead designer) of Bioware have not.

I wonder how long we will have to wait to see anything concrete on the Bioware MMO. Supposedly it is playable now.
All this secrecy, i just wish it wasnt anyway affiliated with ea-games, i have not bought an EA product since earth and beyond, soley because of what they did to westwood studios and the customers of earth and beyond.
playing eq2 and two worlds
Wow, do you really think it would turn to Vaporware? I mean, we are talking about Bioware here. Not an obscure game company that's just starting up. It would look seriously bad on Bioware's track record to have their first MMO game go down the drain.
On another point of the article. I do think it's kind of cool what they're talking about, the game evolving as opposed to remaining static. I think it'll be nice to have some sense of time actually passing by in a game and things actually changing as opposed to simply staying the same. I'm really psyched to see what this is going to be.
As for the comments on the flamers and them being one of the reasons MMO's are being kept secret because it would create too much negative hype. Flamers will always do what they do regardless. Even though Bioware's MMO hasn't been yet been announced, I still see flamers making negative comments because they get a sick kick out of (at least in their mind) thinking their words are actually tormenting somebody on the other side. Basically forum griefing.
Very, very good observation, and I mostly agree. If kept secret for at least a while they can build positive interest in the game without people throwing out their possibly negative and possibly uneducated opinions of a certain genre or brand.
"God, please help us sinful children of Ivalice.."
And since most people seem to expect a SW game, the amount of flaming and disappointment they will get when it is NOT a SW game will be still larger.
So I guess there must be external reasons for keeping the thing secret. If it is indeed a SW game, we can find a good reason (to protect the rights of SOE's SWG). If it is not a SW game, well, then I can't see the reason, but I don't know everything either.
