Well, what is true is World of Warcraft doesnt need a competitor and new mmo to come along and start to take it out. There doing that themselves, as all companies do, they tend to kill their own product.
As already has been mentioned though, there is nothing out there at the moment thats worth jumping onto, 2007 has been a pretty sucky year as far as mmo's have gone and i do tend to think that some of these 2008 mmo's due for release, if they are released properly with not so many game stopping bugs, wow will take a bigger hit than what is expected, along with the other struggling mmo's that are out there too.
However, if these new mmo's suck people will just go back to what they were doing untill a good one comes along, and that time will come (eventually), it always does.
Just because they made wow alot this way does not mean the new game will be anything like it. Blizzard is good at challanging itself and trying to outdo what it did previously. One more thing to think about guys. Not long after Warcraft 3 was launched they announced World of warcraft, and now they have Starcraft 2 coming out ,so does this mean we will see World of Starcraft maybe in 4-5 years after Starcraft 2? lol.
LoL i loved this bit. Blizzard ahs never made anything MMO wise that could be considered a challenge. They just made a cookie cutter MMO with all the good bits and polished it till it worked. That isant challenging thats copying and Pasting.
As for a starcraft MMO well when it came out it was a really good MMO true it wasant inovative once again it was a copy of other RTS game sof the time with a story added on [and this did work]. Have to say tho there new starcraft 2 RTS had better be more than asequel becuas ewith RTS games like Supreme Commander out there the old RTS model is a bit 'Old Hat'.

Not true.
Blizzard hasn't had original ideas. They took from other games and they meshed it together to form a good mix. I am not saying that is a bad thing, but it is not originality. Everything you have in WoW was already there in another MMO, but never in that combination. That still is not innovation, it is just polishing up old things.
I'm sorry, but Blizz has yet to come up with anything original of their own. Not even the new content they are releasing is remotely new. It's just old things made to look pretty and "new". That's not a bad thing...but it's not innovative OR original.

Since they already have WoW, I don't think they will make a WoW clone - so at least that is something to look forward to.
My guess is Starcraft MMORPG - ground combat with a space flight simulator added on.
The two biggest complaints about WoW by folks that haven't played the game are the cartoonish graphics and the fantasy setting. So don't expect those things.
Blizz will have complete MMORPG domination with a SciFi and lots more of my money.

Blizzard is making 2 new games? i know that they released to the public that they are making a star-craft 2, not a mmo, so i hardly doubt if in fact htey r also making a new MMO that it will be a startcraft game.
Also blizzard isnt making anything new so that just leaves a Diablo MMO

Could be cool, never count blizzard out from making a good game. Also I would assume they would not go the kiddie style route again, and that next gen means they are attempting to reinvent the genre... At least that is what it should mean.
Two questions.
1) Why should they not go the kiddie route again? It served them well in WoW
2) What possible indication have you ever seen that Blizzard would actually, positively invent -ANYTHING-, not even talking about the genre.

It's not only about getting subscribers. Its about keeping them, and any new Blizzard MMO won't be designed to get 9m new players. It'll be designed to move players playing WoW now to this game, and hopefully keep them playing WoW as well.

I hope its World of Starcraft, but I would really like to see some originality. Maybe a SKILL BASED SYSTEM with NO LEVELS, and a SANDBOX style game. Please? Just dont feed us another WoW, cause that would fucking suck.
This is what I heard on this - Blizzard's New MMO Not Related To WoW
The newly-merged company still plans to branch out with its next online game.
by Ryan Geddes
December 12, 2007 - Blizzard has confirmed that it is working on a new massively multiplayer online game not connected to the World of Warcraft universe, according to a post on the official WoW message boards earlier this month.
Reported today by Wired's Game|Life blog, the assurance is music to the ears of MMO junkies jonesing for a new drug from the online gaming world's biggest brand.
In response to questions on the WoW boards about a recent job posting, Blizzard community rep Drysc confirmed that the company "an unannounced next-gen MMO." Anticipating the inevitable turn the thread would take, Drysc adds, "and that doesn't mean it's an expansion for World of Warcraft either."
In January, IGN reported that Blizzard (now part of the recently-formed Activision Blizzard) had plans for a new MMO and that it would not be based on WoW or anything too similar to the company's past projects.
Fears that the company's recent merger with Activision would lead to an endless churn of WoW clones would appear to be unfounded. A Blizzard rep was unavailable for immediate comment.
My MMO world is crying for the next SWG MMO. Hoping Blizzard is taking note.
I hope its World of Starcraft, but I would really like to see some originality. Maybe a SKILL BASED SYSTEM with NO LEVELS, and a SANDBOX style game. Please? Just dont feed us another WoW, cause that would fucking suck.

It's a Starcraft MMO. Look at the pattern: Before WoW was announcedm Warcraft 3 was released. WoW is the continuation of that story line. Now Starcraft is due to release, and under its rumblings are confirmations that Blizzard is working on a new, next-gen MMO. Coincidence? I think not. It's Starcraft Online, or World of Starcraft, or whatever they want to call it, but it'll be a continuation of the Starcraft 2 story line.
Also keep in mind the potential money maker of a Starcraft MMO over a Diablo MMO when Korea is put into the mix. Making a Starcraft MMO pretty much guarentees sales in Korea - all of the Koreans! Plus a Diablo MMO would be in direct competition with WoW in the fantasy genre, which doesn't make good business sense. Starcraft Online makes good business sense. With the addition of usable vehicles in the MMO game field, you instantly get "next-gen" out of the formula. The tech is viable, the universe lore is already there, the Starcraft universe is literally internationally loved - Starcraft Online is a license to print moeny for Blizzard, period.
I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.
It's going to be called Systems of Starcraft. Playing it will be a call for help. (Okay, maybe not Systems of Starcraft, but...)
Seriously, stop bitching at WoW. WoW is the best game out there on the market, perhaps with the exception of Eve which is different enough to void comparison. Sure, WoW might not have done anything original, but the graphics and smooth and functional (scoff at cartony all you like, bit it makes identification easy, which is important in games). The backstory is known, so it's not as kludgy as the next "Uh, we have elves and orcs and stuff" MMO to which no one cares about the story. They also spent a lot of time getting their MMO up to a playable state. Such that their beta felt twice as complete as other finished games.
No matter how much you rag on them, Blizzard did what they're known for. They made a quality product. It may not be a great product in itself, but it's so finely crafted that enough people like it to make it the #1 MMO. Most importantly, they took their time with development rather than rush it out the door.
I don't like the game either, but you have to realize what makes it popular. If I were to make an MMO I would follow WoW's example. Use a graphics engine that runs on a lot of machines and is first and foremost functional (bright and pretty colors look better than bitmapped soft-shadowed ugly grey all over the place). Offer a system that encourages casual players (like rested experience, but I don't think it goes far enough). And make the game have content, rather than stretch out the game with an endless grind. If players reach the endgame quickly, so be it.
I to believe that we see the same pattern then the Warcraft III setting up the table for World of Warcraft.
Now it's going to be Starcraft II setting up the table for the Starcraft MMO... Doesn't take a genius to read between the lines here. Although the merge with Activision "might" push it towards a Mech Warrior MMO... And that would litteraly OWN the Sci-Fi market if done well, and is a much more interesting I.P. and story line then starcraft.
Just think about the thousands of books written in the Battletech universe, from Blake in the early 2500 up to 3029 with the rupture of Liao, to be followed by the clan invasion... Shit load of story line and possibilities. Not to mention a skill base MMO would be refreshing, and instead of leveling, you would be fighting for Mech Upgrades of any sorts. Much funnier to gear a mech then gear an avatar if you ask me. Especially when you implement it well: Because there's always a price to pay to use greater gear on a mech. It either makes it fry, or too heavy... So it becomes a real choice of customization instead of a one cookie cutter path everyone takes.
What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...

Good analysis Puuk.
