An MMO for the physically impaired

Chilly_101Chilly_101 Member Posts: 9

Hello, I was wondering if there was an MMO out their that my physically disabled brother could play with me.  He is 22 and last year he suffered a spinal stroke that left his mostly paralyzed from the neck down. With the help of physical therapy he  can move his right hand enough to manipulate a mouse, but not at high speeds or with much accuracy. He still has no control of his left arm of feet.  He likes MMO because they can keep him connected to his friends while still in his room, which he doesn't have the physical ability to leave.  He played WoW for a little and could navigate and do basic combat through a series of macros i set up for him, but even then he died quiet often and he found it frustrating.  I would appreciate any help in finding a game that we can both play.  Thank you.

I would say that Guild Wars is a game that's really easy to navigate and would probably work for your brother. Last time I played,  it was a point and click game, making it really easy to move around and be agile without using the WASD keys. Plus, it's free and it's fairly entertaining.

Thanks for the reply! I hadn't thought about Guild Wars.  I'll have to check it out. Any other suggestions?

Free, so you don't have to buy the original game and you have access to all areas and content?

No, Mr. Kraftwerk. I should have been more concise. There is no monthly fee, so it's free to play. You need to buy the game, and other expansions with it. But you know this.

Then it is false to say it is free to play, when it is only subscription free. Big difference, but you know this.

It does cost money to buy the initial game unless you are giving them away for free yourself. Please be accurate with your information in the future.

All the games that were suggested (Guildwars, Lineage, etc) may be easy to use (point and click with the mouse) but you need to be "fast with the mouse". I believe eventually you will end up having some problems (dieing often, getting frustrating, not being able to find groups, etc).

On the other hand, there are other type of MMOs, like the so called turn based MMORPGs that you can make a search and see if you can find something you like. That's a suggestion that I can come up now of the top of my head as the time is late. I just suggest it so that I open the horizons to the other people to think more openly (than the "traditional" MMOs) in order to make more suggestions.

    Hope I helped.

    King regards,

Do you have any examples of Turn Based MMOs that i could look up?

    Dofus

    or maybe wait for Wakfu

well, I want to try Wakfu, because of the new things they're trying (even though I don't exactly agree with all their decisions... I dislike turn-based, but you can see these features interests me). You'd have to read the developer's blog in order to see what the "real" features of the game are. Otherwise, the features section of the website mainly just list generic stuff... But Wakfu won't be out for probably another 2-3 months. Beta is like next month though maybe.

Note- both games from same developer. They're 2D ISOMETRIC view games

    Hmm. An MMO...

someone suggesting eve caught my eye.  Altho its not a very forgiving enviroment.  If your brother wants to be a trader and crafter. Which is a very viable profession in the Eve world. He could do so easily . And in fleet movements the gang leaders can move ships and generally do as a group.  Since you can loose everything if your caught off guard. Community wise it seems like it would be a great enviroment once he got in a good corp.

I can not remember how reliant on the keyboard eve is.

I remember it having all the drop down menus for moving and what not. which are pretty small and easy to mis-click which might be a problem.  I gotta say Eve is most definately a good game to try  if you and him are wanting nice interaction and comradery between large groups of people who do look out for their own.

Just get him one of those mouses that have like a bunch of buttons on it and help him program it for the activation of modules so he does not have to click on them with the pointer and he should be set.

Speaking of which Eve also has that voice chat built into the client now, doesn't it? which would be a plus.

on an off topic note.  Tho its not a MMO the Civilization series of games might be another good  choice. It can be controled from a mouse. its a turn based strategy game.  And its fairly time consuming game to play.    It can take 20+ playing hours to complete a single game easy.   depending on settings

    runescape would work well

its deep, but has really simple actions (by deep i mean there are a load of skills and stuff)

and its nearly completeley controlled by the mouse.

    Edit: hehe post 1234

I'll install the trial for EVE on his compy and see if he can handle that. I'm also gonna see if Guild Wars will work.   Thanks for all of the help guys, but keep posting with more ideas.

Hey theres also a Corp that really seemed neat posting here on these forums.   I will grab a link, think it was Eve University.   Seemed like a fairly cool group of people to get involved with.

I would check them out for sure.

By what you've mentioned, it seems like he's making progress, and lets hope it continues. But on the subject, have you looked into a custom device - i would say mouse, but for it to fit his needs it could be something completely different; I've seen a couple of "mouse-like" gaming pads that some people with physical disabilities use. Since he has the ability to control a mouse, and with further progress, something like that could give him a more enjoyable experience.

I'll try to remember, or find, an example, or even a company, but no guarantees; I'm a complete mess with all the exams happening at the moment.

Although it's starting to show its age and it's not really an mmo I think diablo 2 is a good choice, you can play the whole game with just a mouse.

Ecranomical, its ok, don't let me add my pressures onto you. I was looking in to http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:HP USB Combo Mouse/Keypad Pointing Device:1991804039 to see if that would make it easier for him, especially for something as relativly simple as Guild Wars or D2 as Caulbob mentioned.

Pirates of the Burning Sea is a great game that requires less twitch. I would give it a go in January when it comes out.

Don't they have customized computer mice and keyboards for physically impaired to play the regular MMOs or computers in general?  I remember seeing something on TV or internet streaming news.  Wish I had a link.

    { Mod Edit }

    Anyways...

I can think of a few good games to play if you can't react quickly, (turn base mostly) but no MMO comes to my mind. (Civilisation IV is great, but for online play you need to know friends or else, it will be very hard to get into the current community that mostly play on restricted server)

It's already hard to find a good MMO to play nowaday, let alone if you add other criterias such as you mentioned here for your brother. Sorry bud, but a MMO is probably not the solution here. Especially since most mouse click to move MMO are griefing ones and requires quick reflexes.

What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...

If your brother is looking for a timesink and a good community, I'd definitely root for EVE Online. I only stopped playing because even when done well the point-and-click combat bored me in the end, mostly due to the fact that I wasn't able to commit enough of my time to be competitive, though.

I'm hoping the re-release of Jumpgate, Jumpgate Evolution, will deliver on where EVE doesn't cut it for me. If your bro can control a mouse, I'd definitely steer him towards a non click to move game, but EVE is still something I'd recommend.

hmm it's unfortunate that Legacy online never lasted, it was almost like a sim city type mmo, I really enjoyed.  Perhaps easily understood cause I'm a big Sim City fan hehe.  But if you can get away from the traditional MMO combat games, theres always stuff like A Tale in the Desert which is more of a civilization learning to grow type game.  The graphics aren't very good but its a very interesting idea that I enjoyed for some time.  A lot of the idea is based upon you can't beat the game without working together.  So an antire server of people trying to compete, trade, grow together to ulitmatly beat the game.  And it actually has a finish... which is a new concept in an MMO, though they restart, I think they are on the third telling right now.

If that doesn't strike your fancy hmmm...Older games like UO might do, and its kinda dim but they stil have a good comunity.   Also a game like SWG might do... they have changed it to twich combat but you can add macro's and stuff to auto loot and auto target, infact the macro system is very good compared to most games out there and that might help you set it up for him.  There are still good servers out there like Starstridder but I know I will get ragged on for saying you should look at it lol but what ever, I think there is good reason at least for you to check it out due to the problem.

I will try and think of more.

Aye i would take into consideration that there are games that only use the mouse, i would look for one of those this way there would less use of the keyboard, perhaps games that dont have a jump needed like saga of ryzom or something.

Everything in eve online can be done with a mouse as well.

Lotro everything can be done with the mouse as well, htough you can jump using the space bar it really isnt used except to be there for people who like to jump everyother step while running lol.

sword of the new world may work for him too, everything you absolutly need to do you can use the mouse for

thats a cple i can think of that might fair him well.

    playing eq2 and two worlds
